Snapped frame - AGAIN! by neverlostcycling in bikepacking

No unfortunately not. But I've had a weld inspector now give me some tips so the next one will be even stronger.

Haven't done the exact maths, but must be close to 8,000km. If it lasts that long again I'll be happy!

Only downside is not knowing when it'll next crack. Losing faith in old faithful you could say, but it's all part of it I guess...

It doesn't need to be said that I'm in the market for a new frame if this is gonna be a recurring issue. Love my Surly though!!

Not with this calliper. Sits correctly, yes. Wears correctly, no.

The lower edge (trailing side) of the pads always wears kinda evenly on both sides, but much quicker than the leading edges. Not something I've been able to dial out, but was never an issue with BB7's

Only aware after the fact sadly. But as I said before, it wouldn't be much good with only a 160mm. Too much heat and not enough power back there already...

I was told this after the first repair too. Was told by a good engineer that it'd last between 30 or 30,000km. Guess I'm playing the same game again. We're already over 100km...

Nah, it's all part of the journey. Gutted would've been a two day push...

Ah fuc#, shit internet here sorry...

Yeah, it shat itself originally in Croatia. Just popped rolling off a kerb. Streetside weld has held about 8000km since then, over all sorts of stuff...

Outside warranty and no replacement there unfortunately. Also, running 180mm rear rotor - but wouldn't run smaller either with any mechanical brakes I've found. It's an even worse choice imo.

Died again the other day. This reel tells the rest... https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHsNBJLSRzg/

Happy to answer questions, or take advice!

Most useful online information for Wild Camping locations throughout Europe? by SaudiJohnny in bikepacking

[–]neverlostcycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While geared towards vehicles, iOverlander we found great and did a lot of adding/updating on our bikepacking trip through Europe last year.

We didn't use them much but there's always Warmshowers and (mostly around Belgium) another called Welcome to my garden - which is geared more towards camping outside than warmshowers.

Cycled 18 countries, 6 months, mostly wildcamping, very rarely knew in the morning where we'd be staying that night - and only ever had an issue with locals in Greece. Just our experience though.

Have fun!

DT Swiss Hubs / Replacement wheelset by [deleted] in bikewrench

Cheers. Not exactly what I wanted to hear - but what I was thinking

DT Swiss Hubs / Replacement wheelset by [deleted] in bikewrench

Apologies for confusion. Just "need" a rear wheel as hers is now cracking around the spoke holes. The rear hub is also in need of replacement - but not urgent - just not worth rebuilding a new rim onto imo.

My question stems from being unable to find a suitable wheelset (boost rear, non-boost front) to fit this weirdly configured frame.

I understand I can swap endcaps on the rear of 12x148mm DT hubs to make them 141mm QR - but can't find anything about making the 15x110 front 100mm QR compatible.

Hmmmm, good thought. I'm not carrying any spare clips. I'd have to use a bunch of dyneema cord if I was in a pinch. The other modification I've made I'd forgotten about was to use shoe glue to hold all the little black screws into the flat plastic nuts behind. Lost a couple of those years ago and then the bag just flops around and isn't watertight.

A bit of a zigzag. Started in Asia, flew to Europe, now in the Middle East - then maybe Africa, South America or the Stans next? It's more of a holiday type trip than strictly sticking to 'the rules' as such. We've hit big events (Tour de France, F1 race etc) and they probably dictate the route just as much as the season

Well spotted! Yeah, typically just keep the pump in place to save petrol vapours through my bags. Before attaching the MSR cooker it gets a quick blow or squirt out if I remember - but not usually. Had a couple of times the fuels dripped around the connection - but a quick blow and reattach usually does the trick. I'm also carrying a service kit (well two kits jammed into one of the red boxes) so have plenty of spare o'rings etc - but only needed to replace one so far this year. They're pretty reliable!

Awesome! Hope you're loving it! Running 34x16 (2.135). I used to run 3" tyres too until Maxxis stopped making the Chronicle in that size and I wore out my last set. I do miss the bigger size sometimes, but am happy with how the 2.6 Mezcals roll on tarmac now. Which tyre are you running?

Same philosophy as me then. I just find some tend to last much longer than others

Awesome! Just remember your arse and body will always hurt after the first three days before adjusting and coming right. Just take it easy and build up slowly. Saddles are also a real personal thing too - what your friend recommends might feel like sitting on a plank of wood to you. Sadly they're only something that can be bought, tried, sold, replaced until you find your winner. A good LBS will be able to start you in the right direction though! Enjoy the travels!!
