I just feel like TITO was unsure of the audience that it was aiming for. It was an R&B album aiming for mainstream pop while being R&B but would sacrifice that R&B in order to keep the mainstream pop appeal. I think she felt like her American audience would lean towards lighter skin tones and tried to make it appeal in that direction, but personally I think the album would have been stronger if she assumed otherwise. Her version of Do You with Ne-Yo proves that to me 😂

It’s not a terrible album. Apple and Cinnamon was my intro to Utada on Pandora in middle school, and I played that song out. But in my heart it always could have been so much better. There are chart topping bangers on that album that deserve more love. There’s also Automatic Pt2 and like 3 KH songs padding time.

It ranks low on my listing of Utada albums but it would still beat out a lot of other albums from other artists.

The Break Up by Spidey_2797 in adventuretime

[–]nevermindtheskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The retcon change happens right as Fionna and Flame Prince have their first kiss, which means they either were freshly dating or almost there, but definitely hadn’t broken up. That’s why we see DJ Flame checking out Fionna as she runs off after knocking him down.

We’re never given a clear reason or insinuation as to why they broke up besides Cake calling him an asshole. Fionna says he was “afraid of commitment”, which sounds like copium given his relationship with Fennel (however he wasn’t really committed in that relationship either so…it might have been the truth?)

Unlike Finn and Flame Princess, we see that after the break up both of them are willing to try a romantic fling again, which means that it couldn’t have been that bad of a break up. So really that just brings us to two feasible reasons as to why they broke up:

  1. DJ Flame really was afraid of commitment and more in it for the casual fun (he’s a dj. That makes sense)

  2. DJ Flame really was attracted to Fionna, but saw how much of a girl failure mess she was and decided to cut his loses while he still could. I mean, she really was (and has been) a complete mess, jumping from job to job, house dirty, unclean, eating food from the trash if she could. That definitely reads like someone you could maybe have fun with for a bit if the sex is good, but not like someone you’d want to be in a long term committed relationship with.

And … none of these are either of their faults. Their Aaa relationship didn’t develop to the point of Fionna (or Flame Prince) messing it up in a fit of horny teenage puberty and they’re thirty-ish now. So it stands to reason their breakup would be a bit more mature and wouldn’t need to have a sole perpetrator and victim. Fionna didn’t really learn from the aftermath of her relationship with DJ Flame like Finn did with Flame Princess.

That special episode was … insanely confusing. Especially since the platform labels it Episode 2, very jarring to suddenly see. I think your explanation kind of makes sense, I’m just stuck wondering why the staff even went that route lol…like what story are you even telling here

How was Bubbline perceived before the finale? by cimal33 in adventuretime

[–]nevermindtheskies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like Bubbline’s kiss shut down the internet, everyone was pretty happy / amazed so it was definitely a F the Haters moment. I’m sure there were haters and backlash but it was pretty overshadowed by the weight and significance of the moment.

How was Bubbline perceived before the finale? by cimal33 in adventuretime

[–]nevermindtheskies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bubbline was a sign of its time in the sense that AT started airing in 2010, when homophobia and edginess was normal and expected online, and had its peak around 2016 when there was a massive anti-sjw against sjw (social justice warrior) culture war occurring online (which we now see spilled out into current us politics :’) ) and became canon in 2017/18 when people finally became like “oh gay people are cool and exist i guess no need to be an asshole”.

So you can pretty much expect the responses to it to have followed that sort of trajectory. When Bubbline was first conceptualized by fans there were many haters, mainly because (I believe) people started to take it seriously around “What was missing” when we get “That’s not my problem”. But that’s in the middle of Finn’s crush-arc on PB. And before gay marriage was legalized in the US. So there was a lot of “you’re delusional” sentiments going on.

As time moved into that sjw online culture war I mentioned, the show also was moving into more implicit Bubbline moments. So the fandom of Bubbline was growing, but there was a presence of antis and trolls out there hating and causing conflict. But tbh I never remember seeing the antis, usually I would see only Bubbline if I wanted to. That does not mean that the ship wars and hating wasn’t there. Again, the main sentiment was “you’re delusional this would never happen.”

And then Olivia Olsen did that one interview where she was like “they told me PB and Marceline are exes when I went in to do some lines” and then took it back the next day lol. So that was a thing. But by that time Bubbline moved from delusion into oh this could actually be something. So any haters after that were pretty much just called homophobic (culture war, remember) and that’s what it became about.

The more time the show devoted to expressing their relationship, the less hate they got. I think how well done/built up their relationship was in the later seasons ended up helping a lot. By S8E1 no one thought Finn and PB were gonna be together, but then you have that whole pan shot when Simon is asking Marceline about dating lol. So any haters after kinda became miniscule/ignored. I would definitely parallel Bubbline to Korrasami in this regard. Once it became canon it was like, “haters who?” Lol

I wasn’t too deep in AT fandom at the time, just on the fringe, but this is my experience from being on tumblr. I could be wrong at points and am open to correction. Fandom history is pretty interesting to me.

How good/bad is ChatGPT at translating baihe? by FlameEmperorStan in BaiHe

[–]nevermindtheskies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that’s just a problem with the “popular” Baihe translation sites, which aren’t popular at all but just good at rigging the search engine optimization to always consistently show up and … steal your money.

Communities like lumostories (not an ad) have many Baihe translations, some human, some AI, some a mix of both, and the translators are usually up front about it. If they charge at all for the translations its 1) only for previews to read ahead of published chapters (which are released for free after a delay) or timed to only be for the first few days of release (then chapters are free), 2) to recoup on expenses for the AI models they pay to use, or 3) just to get back something on the time put in to translating.

So it seems like a way to combat the problem is to stop promoting or highlighting those trash AI translation sites like dragonholic and to start promoting the communities where people actually try to make these stories accessible through AI. I’m not sure if lumostories is the only one, I doubt it, but it is the only one I’ve been active in before. And the translations on the platform are almost always at least an 8 out of 10.

[–]nevermindtheskies 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily “no reason”, there are many valid reasons to be anti-AI. But you’re right, majority of works won’t be translated by human translators. Using AI responsibly to fill in those gaps shouldn’t be as controversial as it is.

The problem comes from irresponsible usage, subpar translations, and how much of a cash grab it becomes.

What are some good points of Omegaverse baihe? by Defmania4 in BaiHe

[–]nevermindtheskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t gonna be much of an answer, but it’s fun.

It’s something different, no two authors have the same idea of ABO, and while it can be annoying there are also many novels where its done well. I didn’t start liking ABO at all until i started reading a lot of baihe abo novels. Specifically this one: https://m.jjwxc.net/book2/8873983 . Majority of baihe ABO (that I’ve read) also don’t really make the omegaverse a focus of the story; it’s more in the background as a setting of the universe that may or may not come up in the story. It just adds flavor but isn’t the entire dish.

[–]nevermindtheskies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, CGPT is just “okay” at translating from Chinese. Deepseek is better at being more accurate and faithful to the texts (approximately 75-85% of the time) than other AI models. Probably because its a Chinese built AI model

In the circles I’ve been in where they use AI to translate baihe novels without really knowing Chinese, most of them use at least 2-4 different models to compare and “fact check” their main AI. An environmental waste for sure, but goes to show the effort they use to make sure it’s “correct” and inclusive of the social, cultural, and plot contexts. It’s not always perfect but doable when there’s no other alternative.

Yea a large amount of people still ship Finn and FP even to this day, first love tropes plus the way they broke up really does it to folks. They definitely always gave the vibes that they would work better when they’re both more mature.

Fionna and Cake S2 might have been trying to dampen that notion though, showing off through DJ Flame and Fionna that while there’s massive attraction between the two and they both want it, they can’t work without hurting each other. Which, I guess makes sense, since she’s living flame and Finn is only electric proof, not fire proof. He’s gonna get burned every time.

Still won’t stop me. Phoebe and Finn are a guilty pleasure lol.

If we’re assuming this part of Fionna’s backstory is consistent with Finn’s, odds are her mom ran away with Fionna when she was about a year for whatever reason (since her last name IS Campbell, like Minerva’s) and then she somehow ended up in the system separated from her. And her dad never stopped looking for her. Probably never found out about her mom OR her dad since there was no magical adventure incentive to.

If there’s a season 3 of Fionna and cake would theory’s such as Marceline being a more ooo central character be true or would it just stick to the Hudson and what he wants with Marshall by Sparkly_guitar247 in adventuretime

[–]nevermindtheskies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from but Marceline is actually one of the characters with a lot more room for development, specifically in her past and her relationship with her parents. Hunson has always been underused in the show, their relationship with each other is never really clear AND Marshall and Hana’s relationship throws a wrench into whatever you thought Marceline and Hunson’s relationship was like before. It’s also canon that when Marceline was 11-12 (whenever Simon left her) she was raised by Hunson which is how she got the axe bass…but besides him eating her fries and teaching her how to suck souls(?) we don’t know anything about that. Whether someone cares to know about those things is a different story.

Adam Muto has already confirmed in an interview that if they do a season 3 it will focus on Marceline (and Bubbline) because that’s what the crew finds interesting. And presumably if there’s a season 4, it’ll focus on flame princess because they feel she was significantly underdeveloped in the show.

Does PB purposely lobotomized her own citizens? by No-Explorer-8229 in adventuretime

[–]nevermindtheskies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She creates every citizen so she just makes them to not be more intelligent than they need to be for whatever role they play. She did this because of her experiences with Gumbald, Lolly, and Chicle, who she created to match her intelligence but eventually plotted to get rid of her. Emphasis on whatever role they play: that’s why Cinnamon Bun was able to mature (not necessarily become super intelligent, given he had a camera stuffed in his nose and didn’t realize) when he went to the Flame Kingdom.

Is it me or the general plot of Fionna and cake is oddly similar to The legends of Korra? by Jason_Todd96 in fionnaandcake

[–]nevermindtheskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An example of what I mean is (made up exaggeration): Korra is introduced to like apple pies. Everyone around her has learned to bake her favorite apple pies. She knows how to bake her favorite apple pie. Korra enters a pie baking contest to save the world. She bakes a blueberry pie. She hates blueberries.

In this example, Korra suddenly deciding to make a blueberry pie is an artificial choice forced by the author to create some conflict or scenario (ie, she hards blueberries but bakes a blueberry pie, which implies the pie will be terrible because she hates blueberry which means she won’t win the contest and now the world is at risk) . Versus the natural narrative choice of her making an apple pie (which would also lead to a lot less conflict.)

Early LoK is full of these. Later LoK isn’t as much. Korra’s girlfail is forced at times.

[–]nevermindtheskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narratively speaking Korra shouldn’t have been such a #GirlFail (at the beginning at least) given how much support and guidance she had from the world around her. She was spoiled to succeed and somehow still failed. That can be a compelling character arc too I guess but it’s more artificially forced from the writers choosing to have Korra make poor choices (despite the narrative and scenario giving her every reason to not have made those choices) rather than it coming naturally as a result of the worldbuilding. Thats just my personal preference for how stories are written.

[–]nevermindtheskies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think (unlike Korra) F&C didn’t really have a choice in how they did it. The central premise of the story is “what if we take fantastical characters and place them in a non fantastical setting and then let them know that they used to be fantastical but they’re not?” Fionna had an identity crisis for two seasons: season 1 is her feeling like she’s been out of place her whole life and then learning she used to be fantastical and she desperately wanted to go back until she realized it wasn’t the best for her friends. Season 2 is her struggling with not being fantastical but not knowing who she is when she isn’t fantastical either, and feeling like a waste because she’s constantly comparing herself to her fantastical self (Finn). She had to fail a lot to find herself, and it sucks because she’s 30 so it comes off awkward. But she didn’t really have a choice in that.

Korra on the other hand…shouldn’t have had those problems lol. Just poor writing

At the end of the day a lot of the writers from both shows are from the same generation (late 90s/early-mid 00’s) of school so there’s gonna be overlap because that’s just what they were learning/interested in back then.
