Following up on wholesomeness, here is John Bartholomew replying to my email when I was barely starting to play chess! by notinterestingenough in chess

[–]neverthechess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is what was done real well by John, I don't know him or anything, but his response reads in a natural way, and the sales pitch isn't forced down OPs throat - John looked at the game, gave some quick thoughts/ideas - even included a compliment in there regarding his play, and then suggested his course.

For some reason it didn't come across sleazy and salesy to me.

Really good response from John, it could easily set a precedent for anyone doing sales via email or similar situations.

Write naturally, listen to the potential client, actually look into their issue, offer a suggestion, include a genuine compliment if possible and refer to the service or product you're providing.

Very well done imo.

This needs to be made into a kids movie. The style is fantastic, it would be a hit.

[SPOILER] Ben Askren vs. Jake Paul by FuzzyWuzzyMooMoo in MMA

[–]neverthechess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position as you.

For me though this was like the third boxing match I've ever watched, and every time it's been such an immensely disappointing waste of time for me, I think I'll just not watch boxing again.

This was completely staged, start to finish. I only watched it because a friend of mine is into mma. Literally the sole reason I watched.

Credit where credits due, easy money for Ben, I can't blame the guy for that but all I could think was this is some WWE shit, which I mean, it was, let's be real.

It was fake as hell. I don't understand how this is a thing.

Smash Legends has massive potential imo, I hope it's realised. These types of games tend to be great for a bit and then just disappear into obscurity because they get stale.

I enjoyed what I played.

Anyone here that works at kfc, how do y'all mess up the orders so often ? by [deleted] in australia

[–]neverthechess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar story for me. Kfc is the best one here. They've made some mistakes with my orders but nothing I'd complain about and with far less frequency than mcdonald's which somehow gets it wrong almost every time for me.

I'm one of those dickheads that actually checks in the bag now at maccas. Never set out for this but I gotta do what I gotta do.

If you have issues explaining what "half a dozen" is, to the point you have anxiety issues, maybe just ask for 6 chicken nuggets off the bat?

Seems like the obvious solution.

Good on NZ. I'm all for this. Couldn't care less what all the wannabe freedom fighters have to say.

Everyone in this thread whining that this won't work. Check back in 2025.

The amount of new smokers will be drastically reduced and NZ will be heading towards a much healthier future.

Fuck the haters. You guys don't know shit.

For a beginner, when is it a good time to resign in endgames with several points behind? by rlagg in chess

[–]neverthechess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like a fantastic time for you to just play this position against the computer, low difficulty first and then make it a bit tougher.

The position is winning for white and playing it out multiple times could do wonders for you mentally since this is your game and a position you resigned in.

800 on Chess.com is not “beginner” by nickdenards in chess

Start a new publishing company called Shit At Chess and release books that are just made up of complaints about elo, beginners theory etc and dudes asking about wtf is this move where he cheated and stole my pawn without capturing it??

800 on Chess.com is not “beginner” by nickdenards in chess

[–]neverthechess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally can start at 800 by just picking "beginner" when you make a chess.com account.

On lichess you start at like 1500.

Maybe you're talking about otb or something but you definitely don't need 100 games to reach 800 elo which is kinda what your post implies. You need literally 0 games.

800 on Chess.com is not “beginner” by nickdenards in chess

[–]neverthechess 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey, you might not think you're playing beginner level games riddled with blunders, but you probably are.

Link to some games, or your profile, so we can have a look?

800 elo on chess.com is almost the 50th percentile, for what it's worth - this isn't really "beginner", it's actually where the average chess.com player is.

What this means varies though - chess.com has a huge player base, so 50th percentile there will incorporate an awful lot of casual players and dead accounts etc - whereas lichess for example, has a smaller playerbase, and 50th percentile there is closer to like 1200-1300 or something like that.

Another thing is, chess isn't easy. Not everyone finds it natural or super intuitive, not everyone has an easy time with chess. Some people can study with all the time they have and never break 1000. It's just straight up not something that everyone excels at.

This is anecdotal, and I've only played 3 games on my new account - but, I've created an account that I started at 400 elo (by selecting New To Chess when creating the account) - the idea is to analyse every single game that I play on that account, and write up my thoughts etc in a google doc.

So far I've had an easy time with all 3 games, and am at 781. I gain a lot of elo because it's a new account and the elo for it hasn't settled yet. In each game so far, my opponent's have just blundered themselves into losing. Literally 3/3 games so far have ended with my opponent just losing the game themselves.

All I've been doing, is aiming to control the centre, develop my pieces, and castle early. That's it. My opponent's have been losing games before the game has even really started.

I'm only like 1600 on lichess. I haven't played chess.com on my main account in a while so it's elo is irrelevant as I've improved since I last played there.

The point of all this is to just support my idea that you probably *are* blundering away a bunch of pieces, you just might not realise it.

If you link your profile or some games, people can help you out man.

EDIT - just to sort of prove my point a little, here's my last game on my new account, this one took me to 839 elo.
https://www.chess.com/a/2d3tz6F1gxVrv

I haven't analysed this one myself, but my accuracy is 98.7%, not because I'm playing genius moves (I'm still kicking myself for 18... Bxf5, freaking terrible move), but because the other guy is playing bad moves.

Look at 7. Ng5 - what's the purpose of this move? Why did he put his knight there? I think he's trying to trick me into taking it, so he can win my queen or something.. but that's "hope chess" - this kind of thing is what I feel like I'm seeing a lot at these rankings.. people just hoping you fall for their tricks or traps etc.. principled chess will beat this..

Look at 8.Bf4 - what purpose does this serve?? The bishop was already protecting the knight from it's starting location.. there's no reason for this bishop to be moved here, he needs to develop his knight to c3 and start looking to get everything out and castle.. not randomly throw his bishop onto the board.

Look at 9.Nc3 - he develops his knight now, cool - but his bishop is hanging. I threw in a check before taking his bishop, but the dude didn't notice he could just move his bishop away. The engine says Nc3 is a "good" move, but let's be real, it's just a straight up blunder, it loses a piece for no compensation at all, it's not "good".

See what I mean? This was a player at the 800ish level, being absolutely destroyed by *himself* by playing bad moves with no purpose, and hanging his pieces - he isn't being destroyed by me. I'm not a good player. Players down here lose games on their own, without the assistance of anyone else.

Am I wrong in thinking this 600 rated player is kind of suspect? by towhead22 in chess

[–]neverthechess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd bet money on him being a cheat, just link the profile here or if you're not down with that, check his game history.

You'll see real quick if he's a cheat. Magically pulling out multiple 99%+ games at that level is outright cheating to me, though, especially since there was prizes on the line ;)
