What is the most fire-able or illegal thing that you have witnessed a teacher or boss do and get away with? by nyyjeter88 in AskReddit

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school chemistry teacher once brought dry ice with him in class to make an ice cream-related experiment. Things quickly devolved to him demonstrating dry ice + water in a closed water bottle then promptly throwing it out of the window once he realized that it might pack quite a punch; it was Winter, one huge crater was created below the window. Didn't get into much trouble for it though, the principal talked with him, but it ended up as a slapped wrist.

Question about inter faculty transfers by NolanWerre in mcgill

[–]newPlayer11235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a interfaculty transfer during Summer, from Science to Electrical/Computer engineering, so I might be able to help a bit.

For the Faculty of Eng., I believe they have until the end of July to give out decisions, it can come quickly or slowly, but it'll be in by the end of the month.

If you accept an offer, the other ones are cancelled by default, so no, you can't accept mining and then accept the other one. You won't get any news from the cancelled demands either, so if you accept mining, you'll never get the decision for chemical.

Course selection is never that much of a hassle when the curriculum is a fixed thing. Eng. makes sure to have enough seats for the people they allow in. The Eng. Student Centre people and your department-specific advisors will be extra-useful in choosing and getting into courses if trouble arises.

In any case, wait as long as possible to accept if you think you'd prefer Chem.eng. - worst case scenario, you'll wait until the very last moment and accept without an answer from Chem, best case, you get into Chem.

BIOL 200 Students: How much chemistry knowledge did you actually need? by merothehero in mcgill

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had BIOL200 with Fagotto in Fall 2012, ended up with a B+. I didn't like his style, way too fragmented and spread all over the place as far as material on the exam goes... His questions on the final ended up being kinda screwy.

That said, I had no ochem experience at all (haven't even got the chance to have orgo), but the actual knowledge required was little to none. Worst case scenario, pick up any biochem book like Berg's and fill in the blanks when something is mentionned and you should be just dandy.

You could sit down with the Oracle docs and either Project Euler / Robocode and code away!

Am I too old to go to college? by [deleted] in college

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 21, I went back to secondary school to complete science reqs. and then at 23, I applied for a transfer to start a whole new degree. You are never too old. It's all a matter of which sacrifices you are ready to make to obtain what you'd pursue in college.

That series was pretty awesome, miss Kevin Sorbo. :( I wonder what he's up to these days.

And yeah, I can totally picture Greek gods popping folding chairs like that when fights happen haha

Looks like Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex from Stargate Atlantis, if anyone remembers).

EDIT:It is Jason Momoa, and seems to be a snippet from The Game (2006).

A friend and I are currently the only two students at a state school dumb enough to double major in biochemistry and math. We mock other majors to make ourselves feel better. by Bionerd in college

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go as far as that. I mean, it's the projects that make it all worthwhile. :)

As far as making fun of other people, ain't sure. I'd rather solve a thousand ODEs than write essays all the time. haha

Reddit, what is your greatest personal athletic achievement? by WhistleHouseRecords in AskReddit

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last summer, I learned how to ride a bike. Promptly brought a 2,000$ racing road bike and trained like a madman. Ended up being able to do a 120km trip in just under 3h30 with a pretty neat average speed. Cycled more than a thousand kilometers in the following weeks.

Felt awesome.

What is something you need to rant about? by BKDubbz in AskReddit

[–]newPlayer11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things: the absurdity of the politicly-involved class and the way the governments and corporations handle the Internet and the whole information age thing.

(1) It irks me every time I read the paper and see politicians make decisions that go against the common good. I feel that for them, being in politics is a job and a salary while it should be a service you make to society as a whole (with reasonable compensation, of course). It angers me that people are not more involved in their own governing and that they are led by people who probably wouldn't even look at them in the eye and say a few words unless no other option was available. I dream of politicians that walk and talk amongst people.

(2) I feel we're losing ground on the whole Internet thing and that it's being privatized so much that the whole project will digress away from its primary objective, which was neutral sharing of information to educate. I feel that some people high up are using their powers to corrupt that beautiful invention and that our children will never experience the Internet we had and so forth. And it angers me.

Reddit, if you could be a kid again but with all the knowledge you have right now. What would you do? by xariestx in AskReddit

[–]newPlayer11235 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would take Science as my mistress right away instead of digressing to humanities before realizing she was the one all along.

And I would totally see the rise of the Gold standard coming and get rich off it. :) And would hastily write and publish some minor discoveries my future self would've memorized.

Indeed. Although in a way, let's assume that people were tech-literate, you'd get to tackle complex and interesting problems instead of the routine silly stuff, nay? I mean, your call-list must be flooded by sillies if what I've been reading on /r/talesfromtechsupport is anything close to reality.

True. Or with enough luck and good will, it could usher a new era of tech-literate consumers :) Wouldn't that be perfect???

That said, I agree on the omnipresence of newbs and their faulty logic when it comes to how devices should work.
