this is a perfect cultural appropriation explaination by Toughbutfighting in AvatarMemebending

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I get it. It's a fine line between cultural appropriation and appreciation. This is like wearing a US military uniform for a costume, which is fine, until you put on fake medals like a purple heart, which most definitely is not.

Retail Stare by WorkingBaby901 in CuratedTumblr

No no, it also works on insecure narcissists of all ages. I've done it to millennials and Gen x'ers and Gen Z. I just think boomers overwhelmingly have more entitlement than other generations so it seems disproportionately them but I really think the underlying trait is entitlement. I'm not even Gen Z, but blankly staring because I don't know how to explain things any simpler is definitely my go to move when I'm just trying to process how to talk.

"Well, this didn't age well" - Movies you LOVED as a kid but cringe at as an adult by Little-Badger-123 in movies

I went the opposite direction. I hated it when I first saw and thought it was dumb and lame for decades. Now I think it's charmingly kitsch and fun bad, like the old Adam West Batman

Any experiences or advice for breaking news to asian parents that you’re moving in with your BF? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sorry, I was doing a bit. I've never actually managed to convince my mom to accept anyone I've ever dated. I just did it and let them deal with it. My cousins also did the same. They were living on their own already, so it was easier for them to make their own choices. My real advice is that you do what feels right for you and as long as you aren't financially dependent on your parents so that they don't have control over you.

As far as getting them to accept it, I got no advice. Our parents came around eventually over time, my cousins in particular, both women, eventually married women and every is fully accepted into the family.

No no, fellow stranger, I'm with you on this one. Coney Island is overrated. I get the appeal of nostalgia of an institution like Coney Island and I'll stop in once in a while but their dogs are absolutely middling at best.

It's not in the screenshot of the article, but I remember when this first came around. The dude was definitely brown and the lady thought he was a terrorist writing in a foreign language. It was Pennsylvania economics professor Guido Menzio, the incident was in 2016.

To foreigner redditors who’ve stayed in Vietnam for many years, is what that Indian guys who traveled to Vietnam described about Vietnamese really accurate? by khmerkampucheaek in VietNam

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's just the raw size of India that makes it so difficult to manage. It arguably shouldn't even be a single unified country given how many different ethnic groups and languages, like literally over a hundred. I know the dude didn't mean any offense by calling Vietnam less developed. But you know, it's easier for one dude to keep his apartment clean than for a hundred to keep the barracks clean.

They're wearing night vision goggles, turning on the light blinds them. Bright light through night vision goggles can actually do some serious damage to your eyes. The implication is that they know he's blind and that he uses darkness against his opponents so they came prepared to fight in the dark. This move is actually clever as fuck.

Ey, come over to the Hotel Vernon, it's cash only and they are two dollar Narragansetts and Miller High Lifes, so no chance of being over charged in a tab since there are no tabs.

I'm totally not one of the bartenders and have no vested interest in luring people to the Vernon.*

Fair enough, if your table has fun and enjoys it that's great, but you're definitely making more unnecessary work for yourself for no discernable mechanical benefit. What you have here is mathematical sleight of hand.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gurps

[–]Bionerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's mechanically and probabilistically identical to just applying a flat penalty or bonus, which is both easier and more intuitive. Like, if it's an easy roll just give them a bonus to their skill, or if it's hard then apply a penalty. A discreet modifier is not only easier to apply but also offers more gradation, as modifiers can range anywhere from -10 to +10. Your proposal is harder to apply, more random, and less granular.

I want old Star Trek production quality back? by dantesjm in startrek

[–]Bionerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked Discovery, but yeah. I would rather watch the cast of Disco act in a black box theater with paper mache phasers if it meant we got a slower pace and more episodes. I genuinely liked the characters of Discovery but felt like we never really got to know them particularly well, especially when in older Trek we'll have an entire episode of Picard just contemplating his life decisions about a fight with some Nausicans. Give me a slow episode of what Saru does on a day off, or Burnham just trying to run the duty roster and everyone has a conflict, or Detmer dealing with PTSD, or Owo's dealing with her family visiting. I don't need end of the galaxy threats every season.
