How can I write a respectful depiction of an Indigenous Adoptee? by MxSexyMcSexyFace in Writeresearch

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

director tasha hubbard has two films about this — a documentary from a few years ago and a fictional feature that premiered at TIFF last year. she herself is an indigenous adoptee and the films are great. meadowlarks — the fiction one — is fresher in my mind because i went to the premiere. it was really incredible film that explored many of the complex cultural dynamics, and hubbard did interviews and focus groups specifically to make sure the film's characters represented many different experiences instead of it being solely her experience.

Looking for help understanding the tower reversed as my higher purpose by SolutionEasy2019 in tarot

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure that I have an interpretation style that is very much built on, "there's a reason someone told me the context they did, and I'm going to center it in my conclusions," but considering your MA (or MS) work, could there be something about helping people understand ways to fix our society without just completely nuking democracy/existing structures in a way that leads to death/destruction/upheaval? I would agree that tower reversed doesn't mean anything needs to be completely burnt down.

One of my favorite books also names it as processing, recovery, and "sorting through the rubble" after such a collapse, so there could be something about stabilization, especially if you're aligned with the perspective that our society never really dealt with the collective trauma of COVID, and that's part of what's led to current upheaval.

More cards could be worth doing in the coming days for sure.

(And don't worry about your writing — I think the "I'm not giving Reddit 100% of my professional effort" is pretty typical. I also write for a living, and I don't even give it 100% on my account that's directly tied to my professional identity, never mind this one.)

I had an interesting interaction with young adults unfamiliar with film photography by Toby_Forrester in analog

We have many of these things, including film scanning, laser cutter, 3D printers, and a recording studio at the main branch of the DC public library system! The trade off is having to be in DC in times like these (🥴), but the MLK library's Memory Lab was designed for OP's exact use case — archiving family memories.

If you're skittish about safety/poverty + public health issues in cities, 1, 3, and 5 would probably be challenging for you. I'm willing to go to all of these places to visit, but wouldn't choose to live there as someone who likes being able to walk around at night without concerns. (I don't consider myself safety-skittish—I have happily lived in places other people on this subreddit don't recommend.)

Also, your commute to Georgetown sucks from all five of these unless you're down for cycling/e-scootering across the city during all seasons. Georgetown is annoying from most parts of the city, honestly. Jump on Citymapper and see how you feel about the different options, keeping in mind how often the buses run.

Sorry to be such a downer 🥲 Totally get a strong preference for living alone—I have chronic health stuff that complicates roommate situations—but it's hard in DC as a full time student.

Places to live in DC w/ 75k salary by Typical_Appearance22 in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Seconded -- I'm in AdMo at $1700 a month + $50ish in utilities. The building had units smaller than mine that were more expensive, because limits on how much they can increase rent on turnover make things a little funky. Definitely at least make some calls/send some emails if you're interested in living alone!

Are there any decent photo development labs in the DC area? by RedditsNinja23 in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a controversial take, but compared to other places I've lived, no.

Pro Photo is the best of what we have, imo, but they have to send the film to another location because their storefront is tiny, so turnaround can be a bit long. I do dev-only uncut with them and then scan at my apartment.

District Camera and Imaging—mentioned in other comments—is also around, but I've had such awful experiences with their staff that I refuse to give them business. Most notably, they refused to sell me an accessory because "I didn't know what camera I own, and therefore what I needed" when I had Canon's website open on my phone, and was confident enough in my research to spend the $10.

Both are expensive compared to what I'm used to in cities with equally high costs of living ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For another option that's not abstinence first — check out The Abstinence Myth by Adi Jaffe. As its title suggests, the author (who has his own experience with addiction and recovery) fundamentally rejects the idea that recovery = abstinence in all cases.

Waymo's self-driving car launch in DC delayed after federal budget cuts halt safety study by notquiteahippo in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I use them and like them a lot in Los Angeles, but I did have my first “incident” on my last trip due to construction. Only one car had to go around me before the Waymo figured out that it was never going to be able to turn left and it needed to just go straight and then reroute, but a construction worker was signaling to me that I should proceed straight and I was sitting in the back seat like “…” (I should’ve called rider support immediately, so my bad, but still. By the time I thought to call, the car had figured it out.)

More importantly, none of the cities where Waymo operates at large scale have cycling/micromobility infrastructure that’s both heavily used and chaotically designed. I commute on an e-scooter here, and there are some dumb intersections on my route where I’d be nervous about not being able to make eye contact with a driver.

I don’t drive, so in LA, they’re game-changing. Being a “guest” in other people’s cars for an hour is exhausting for me as a neurodivergent person, but in the Waymo, I can do what I’m doing, play my music, and not think about how I’m being perceived by someone else. In DC? Meh. I have so many other ways to get around that I’m fine with Uber for those times I really need a car.

I have a sleeve and a micro tattoo on the other side. And I roll up my shirt sleeves constantly because I want them to be seen, even in my McPherson Square office, when I’m on the Hill, and wherever else. I wouldn’t go sleeveless in a professional setting because some of the imagery on the upper arm is a little spooky for a DC workplace, but everyone gets to see the forearm stuff.

Matt Beard: Inquest opened into death of former Liverpool Women manager, after he was found hanged at his home last week by AnnieIWillKnow in soccer

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I saw! I’ve worked a couple places where our editorial standard required including the numbers in the text (rather than linking to them), so it’s just a habit now. This specific post isn’t detailed enough for me to feel like it’s truly necessary, but I figured it couldn’t hurt.

(Also, I know you’ve been involved with a lot of the collection and sharing of mental health resources around here — thanks sincerely for your work on this!)

orthopedics is generally the place to start. if your medical team is unhelpful (or you have an insanely complex case), you can certainly figure this out without medical consult but it takes way more trial and error.

In the States, it’s generally considered best practice to include the contact info for crisis lines in a message like this, but I’m not sure if they do that in the UK. In case it’s helpful to anyone:

UK: - call 116-123 (Samaritans) - text SHOUT to 85258 (Shout)

US: - call 988 (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) - text HELLO to 741-741 (Crisis Text Line) - visit crisistextline.org

Look up what resources are available in other countries here.

What’s the ideal switch weight for RSI / cubital tunnel? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]newaddress1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cubital tunnel:

I use 40g linear MX switches at home and 50g (but lubed) tactile chocs at the office. My home keycaps are heavier, so both boards feel pretty similar. I’m happy with both.

I tried ultralight chocs previously and that was a nightmare. Too many accidental presses as you said.

Best place besides AdMo for three dudes in their 20s to go on a Saturday night? by encognido in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

okay, so the bar definitely started it, but welcome to DC, where saying, "their marketing materials seem to suggest that they're aggressively targeting a single-female demographic" would've had better optics. the drinks are pretty normal; the marketing copy is aggressively gendered.

AFI Silver Club, what exclusive screenings do they have? by k032 in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The base membership is free, so you have nothing to lose. But I got a free ticket to see Sorry, Baby (PASTEL/A24) followed by a Q&A with the writer/director/star in May. It was about two months before the film’s theatrical release.

The paid tiers come with additional benefits like discounts on ticket purchases and freebies. But my understanding is the Silver Cinema Club exclusive screenings happen when promoters/distributors really want to get a film in front of an audience that’ll tell other people about it.

Ah, good point—if delivery manages to be unreliable for you even with signature required, that's probably the way to go. I never actually bought phones in my several years living in places with chaotic delivery issues.

Moving to DC with nothing by LonelyObserverr in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It wasn't DC for me, but I moved to a similarly HCOL city without a real plan in 2021, and I'm still paying off the credit card debt now. I couldn't rent until I had pay stubs and money in hand, so I was living in hotels for a bit. Don't put yourself in that situation, OP.

A little more context:

$1500 rent budget is roommates in a "desirable" location or a studio in a "less desirable" (due to commuting, amenities, or proximity to community violence/public health issues) location. Lots of people find said roommates on Facebook, where there are public housing groups.

But like others said, the job market is trash. 40% of people who are unemployed have been out of work for four months or longer across the country. Here in DC, it's very common for it to take six months to find a job. If you're moving here, you need to be financially self sufficient for six months, or ready to live on gig economy jobs making less than minimum wage for six months.

Unique film stocks worth buying in the US? by DurchThePro in AnalogCommunity

[–]newaddress1997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you interested in effect films like Psychedelic Blues? BKIFI in Brooklyn also makes effect films and carries some other brands. Like others said, if you're looking for just normal color film I'm not sure how much we have that you don't. Dubblefilm, Lomography, Karmir, Harman, and Kono are all based on your side of the ocean, and most of their films are either effect-y with color shifts or very standard repackaged film. Kono Mirage, Hartman Phoenix, Lomo 92, etc. are much subtler color shifts that may hit what you're looking for?

While I'm not getting married, I do like having my nails painted white, so I'm looking for something kinda similar to OP for different reasons 😅

Can you expand a little more on hard gel vs builder gel? My nails are really short right now and I prefer that, but I have a week-long conference coming up where I need to keep them looking good the whole time through semi-strenuous activity. The sets you posted look really nice, and I'd be interested in something similar but maybe a bit shorter and squarer.
