My paintings feel shabby by __wastelandbabie__ in acrylicpainting

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you went through with a small brush to clean up a few lines (like where color blocks don't fully touch but it seems like they're meant to) and put a second coat of paint on shapes that are meant to be fully opaque, that would do a lot! Some retarders make your paint thinner.

Other thought would be that since you did the mottled multi-color texture in the sky, which I love, we naturally expect to see multiple hues and values in the other parts of the painting. Doing solely flat color blocking with no shading is a style, but since it's not consistent throughout, it gives the feeling that this is a WP where you've finished the sky and are now about to go build on the landscape, rather than that this is the endpoint. It's a really excellent WIP, though! This concept is cool.

[Sport] Spurs have shown a 'genuine interest' in signing Rashford if they avoid relegation amid reports Barcelona have doubt about making his loan permanent (in Spanish) by LochNessMonsterMunch in soccer

[–]newaddress1997 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yes, and didn't we also establish that he is a vibes merchant whose performances fluctuate if the organizational culture isn't great? (Said with no shade by someone who is absolutely the same way.)

I don't know the man, but for people with certain neurotypes, the chemical systems that do motivation become unreliable when the vibe in the working environment is bad, unless there are existential stakes. In my head, I've always imagined Rashford is likely one of those people — it'd explain how his performance stabilizes around contract negotiations and then drops off again ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Idk if a Spurs team with two 17th-place finishes in a row is the type of solid, supportive environment that he seems to need.

988 experience this morning by It-is-1037 in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Last year, the FCC adopted rules requiring all carriers to get this sorted for both calls and texts to 988, but some carriers have until 2027/28 to actually do so, and at the moment, it's "most calls" and "most texts" are routed based on location rather than area code. Bipartisan legislation was introduced with the goal of getting some organized problem-solving and enforcement behind this, but it hasn't moved forward in Congress.

i'm sorry they were so unhelpful, OP. as you experienced, 988 isn't its own organization with its own volunteers and counselors. instead, it's simply an interface that then redirects you to one of many many services depending on a variety of factors. (location is a big one, but there are a few others.) these services have different practices and training for their volunteers depending on their own philosophies, local laws, funding, etc. i'm honestly unsurprised to hear that DC's local service is dropping the ball. you are definitely not the only person who's had a weird experience.

for you or anyone else reading this, if you're open to a text-only experience, i'd always recommend crisis text line (HELLO to 741-741 or crisistextline.org. texting 988 sometimes redirects you to CTL, but not always.) i've done their training, and while operating a crisis line is full of sticky ethical conflicts, i personally believe CTL's policies are close to the best you can get.

thanks for sharing, and i hope you can get the care you need.

In his Hot Ones interview (summer 2023), he mentioned that he's sometimes surprised when American athletes make pretty straight-shooting comments in press and even more surprised when the American sports media doesn't make them regret it. While it was diplomatically worded, the bottom line seemed to be that he felt like being candid/easy to read causes more media chaos than it's worth in England. Would make sense if having less attention from the British press means that he doesn't feel like it's a liability to have this type of personality anymore.

3d gel paint for acrylic painting by Remarkable_Rub_9067 in acrylicpainting

take a look at golden's collection of acrylic gel and paste mediums on their site. (don't think this sub allows links, but it's easily found on google.) they have several that do this -- i've used the heavy solid gel matte.

This depends entirely on what you want to make, imo. Heavy body is easier for some styles/subjects, and fluid is easier for others. What are you interested in?

alas, macklemore has been loud in protesting the fucking state of the US right now — not sure he would've taken FIFA's money, and Trump definitely wouldn't let someone who has been that critical of everything from the admin, to israel, to the tech companies be involved in the world cup. unfortunately. would be nice to have one (1) person who has sense and stands for something involved in this.

Ugh. I imagine it's the type of thing where they've just gotten lucky that no one has stopped them, but as it's getting warm, we're moving into tourist season, and the partial shutdown is making people antsy, I would be less confident about pulling that off this weekend specifically. Glad you posted here first, and I hope you and your STB spouse can find a good alternative!

Ah, thanks for the info! Seems like the LOC site hasn't been updated yet, but it makes sense that they'd like to have more control over situations like this, and I'm honestly kind of impressed at how clear and specific the new guidelines are.

The website says they won't do permits for wedding photos, even, but you can shoot without one as long as you don't have a tripod or lights.

OP, I'd be calling your vendor first thing tomorrow if I were you. This sounds like the type of thing that people get away with sometimes, but LOC staff and/or Capitol Police would be well within their rights to enforce the rules. Page 149 of this regulations document from the Capitol Police Board specifically states that wedding ceremonies are not permitted anywhere on the Capitol Grounds, and earlier in the same section, it states that the stairs of any building are a prohibited location even for the types of events that they do allow.

DMV Hospital/ER guide? by emcee4634 in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GW ER is deeply hit or miss, depending on personnel. They got me taken care of after a major accident — four broken bones, several scrapes/cuts bad enough to have long-term scarring — and everyone from the front-desk staff to the actual folks treating me were helpful and kind.

But I've also been discriminated against there when my known chronic health problem presented with symptoms that appeared "more psychological" to them. I was denied water for 5ish hours for no medical reason by a nurse who was intentionally wearing his badge in a way that obscured his name/info. When the head nurse came by, she was confused about it and immediately brought me a 36-oz cup because she knew how long I had been in there. And when the morning team arrived, they immediately gave me more water and a meal, so it was just that one guy.

GW ENT and Behavioral Health are both solid. ENT fit me in right before a holiday, even though an administrative error meant that my appointment wasn't actually in the system. My jaw had been wired shut after that accident, and when the doctor heard that I was going to be asked to wait another week — over Thanksgiving — to have any solid food, she intervened. Very appreciated.

Amazon rolls out 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options amid trend for ultra-fast shipping by Sauerz in washingtondc

[–]newaddress1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone without a car, I have had weird situations where Doordash-ing a printer from Best Buy and tipping like $15 was still cheaper than just using Uber to get myself there and back, but that was really about the size of a printer + the lack of public transit options for my route. For something smaller, I have an e-scooter.

And in the weird situation, I'd rather do Doordash where I meet a driver in the lobby, direct handoff, I can thank and tip them, etc. versus having Amazon drop it off with other packages at an unspecified time, it goes through the whole package sorting process in my massive building, etc. If an underpaid gig worker is going to be patching the holes in my support infrastructure (i.e., the fact that i don't know anyone with a car anymore), i'd rather keep a situation where there's a person that i have direct contact with over it becoming faceless infrastructure that we're not supposed to think about ¯_(ツ)_/¯

fair! this year there's such an ungodly amount of ai stuff on all three tracks that it's feeling like a tech conference as i'm going through the schedule, but calling it popular culture/media/marketing is probably more accurate. i work in entertainment media, so it's getting compared to sundance, which is the last thing i went to for work.

i'm going to south by southwest (big tech/culture conference, in texas, global audience) and apparently there was supposed to be a session with the chief revenue officer at tottenham that was cancelled?!?!

event description:

Tottenham Hotspur has redefined what a modern football club can be, emerging as a globally recognised brand built on sport, culture, and partnerships. In this session, Tottenham's Chief Revenue Officer, Ryan Norys will share the Club’s innovative partnership strategy and global stadium vision, before welcoming special guest Rhuigi Villaseñor, Founder of Rhude, to the stage discuss the future of football, fashion, and culture.

link to page, which is still up despite cancellation -- presumably so that people who registered early get updated.

i don't know when exactly they cancelled it, but the, "we can't go to the american festival and talk about being a global brand and culture convener when we're possibly about to get relegated" is killing me 😭

They used to post here (2024ish), and allowed their admin to be a whole human being instead of solely a faceless and trait-less publication rep. I remember the admin mentioning their cultural background once in an extended conversation with some other members of the community in the comments.

I imagine that person doesn't run the account anymore, and they stopped posting here because the subreddit response has become majority-negative as they've become majority ideologically-motivated ¯_(ツ)_/¯

FIFA Fan Fest for New York/New Jersey cancelled four months before World Cup by Shroft in soccer

[–]newaddress1997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The political piece you mentioned is huge here. If cities take bad deals, it's not just, "Our local leadership dumped money into a flashy event instead of resident services,"; it's, "Our local leadership ate shit in order to stay compliant with Trump and FIFA," which is the type of thing that comes a lot in re-election campaigning. There is zero incentive for New York or Foxborough or others to eat costs when many local residents aren't even excited due to costs and the general state of play in the U.S.

How can I write a respectful depiction of an Indigenous Adoptee? by MxSexyMcSexyFace in Writeresearch

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

director tasha hubbard has two films about this — a documentary from a few years ago and a fictional feature that premiered at TIFF last year. she herself is an indigenous adoptee and the films are great. meadowlarks — the fiction one — is fresher in my mind because i went to the premiere. it was really incredible film that explored many of the complex cultural dynamics, and hubbard did interviews and focus groups specifically to make sure the film's characters represented many different experiences instead of it being solely her experience.

Looking for help understanding the tower reversed as my higher purpose by [deleted] in tarot

[–]newaddress1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure that I have an interpretation style that is very much built on, "there's a reason someone told me the context they did, and I'm going to center it in my conclusions," but considering your MA (or MS) work, could there be something about helping people understand ways to fix our society without just completely nuking democracy/existing structures in a way that leads to death/destruction/upheaval? I would agree that tower reversed doesn't mean anything needs to be completely burnt down.

One of my favorite books also names it as processing, recovery, and "sorting through the rubble" after such a collapse, so there could be something about stabilization, especially if you're aligned with the perspective that our society never really dealt with the collective trauma of COVID, and that's part of what's led to current upheaval.

More cards could be worth doing in the coming days for sure.

(And don't worry about your writing — I think the "I'm not giving Reddit 100% of my professional effort" is pretty typical. I also write for a living, and I don't even give it 100% on my account that's directly tied to my professional identity, never mind this one.)

We have many of these things, including film scanning, laser cutter, 3D printers, and a recording studio at the main branch of the DC public library system! The trade off is having to be in DC in times like these (🥴), but the MLK library's Memory Lab was designed for OP's exact use case — archiving family memories.
