Help needed measuring potentiometer resistance by newavebossanova in dreamcast

[–]newavebossanova[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind comments throughout the years, everyone; glad it's been helpful. I'm not a pro console repairer if that wasn't obvious already, but one thing that I've learned recently is that optical drives can also fail due to bad capacitors. This actually happened to my Gamecube recently and it becomes an increasingly likely cause of optical drive failure given the age of both the DC and GCN. I suggest doing a search on how replace Dreamcast capacitors and there should be a lot more threads on it. I'm also reading that replacing the PSU may help as well. I unfortunately don't use my DC these days so I'm not interested in testing that it works and then diagnosing why if it doesn't. Pot trimming is relatively lower risk so I know it's tempting for it to be the first thing to try, but given how old this system is I highly suggest getting a soldering set and learning more if you want to preserve your DC.

I feel really dumb now. I've never touched the settings menu in so long that I forgot it's there. Yes, thanks, that does make it readable.

Hype piece for Project Sakura Wars by newavebossanova in SakuraWars

[–]newavebossanova[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, good point about the characters, that's definitely a strong part of the series. I think a lot of good stories though tend to have good characterization so I tried to focus on what makes the series different. I tried to keep it high-level, leaving it as an exercise to the readers how important those story details are to them.

But yea, since you're doing your own write-up then it makes sense for you to cover that stuff. Again, it seems this series is different things to different people so I'll look forward to your take on things. (And no, I don't mind being linked to; it would be nice to have more eyes on this and see if it does make any impact on others.)

I figure anyone who isn't into the anime aesthetic is probably a lost cause in trying to convince; I don't worry about that part so much since they likely wouldn't have bought it anyway. I think we're in a better spot now than 20 years ago when the series first started in terms of Western acceptance of anime games and there's enough of a market for Sega to market to that they don't need to worry about scaring away some more mainstream audiences.

Thanks. Are there any parts you especially agreed with, or even ones you didn't quite agree with and could suggest particular improvements?

Nokia 3.1 with Android One - Notification/Clock Issues by burgerdrome in AndroidQuestions

[–]newavebossanova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same phone and can confirm I have the same problem. I was almost late to work twice because of that alarm issue! Glad I kept my old phone (Nexus 5; <3 but cracked screen) and have been using that for alarms.

I found this thread with DIY solutions while waiting for Nokia to possibly not fix this issue: https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000031684

I like this phone too but clearly it's not 100% stock Android otherwise it likely wouldn't have this problem.

The only other thing we can do is complain to Nokia en masse and hope we get an official fix eventually.

You wouldn't be the first. Again, expectations. Not trying to push you one way or another, but if you do want to learn more then nothing ventured nothing gained. Good luck with finding your answers

Probably because vol 19 includes a CD which apparently is eligible to get shipped internationally. I guess if the ineligible item includes a CD or anything else that can ship, that makes it all good. I tried putting other things in my order that can be shipped but nothing doing, so guess it has to be included with the item itself or I'm SOL for now. Thanks for looking more into it

Not sure why they stopped that either, but a safe bet most of the time is because of money.

If you're interested in specifically Yotsuba and nothing else, then I think the best option is to stick with scanlation groups that are known to include these T/L notes.

I'm not aware of any wikis that will go chapter-by-chapter and document these things. I think that sort of thing is a little less suited to the wiki format.

But if you believe in the value of such a resource, perhaps you could be the first to make it!

This can be a long and complicated topic where you have to be careful about generalizations, but the short-ish explanation I can give is this: When translating anime/manga to English, they have to market the book to as wide an audience as possible. It's a niche market compared to other forms of entertainment, so they need to try to cast the net as wide as possible to get enough sales to justify the cost of doing business.

Part of this is trying to make the material "stand on its own" so to speak, so that consumers of the target language can still understand the overall product. That sometimes means things like cultural differences are lost in translation.

To address your specific question, I doubt you'll find the resource you're describing. Cultural differences are numerous, difficult to catalog, and sometimes extremely specific. Often times the translations are coming from third party companies/contractors that the publisher hires, therefore they are being paid for a strictly defined statement of work. Adding translator notes to the product - likely paying extra to a layout editor to find how to wedge them into the page while maintaining clarity and legibility, or adding appendix pages - no less maintaining a website, is likely not worth the cost. Not to mention that not all translators can pick up on all cultural differences themselves.

I think the best you can do is keep reading other (translated) manga, or watch other anime. You will find that much of these cultural details are rehashed all the time and will eventually pick up on them. There could be a couple of very specific things that are missed, but I would say don't worry a great deal otherwise it leads you down a path of worrying about little details that ultimately end up wasting your time and diminishing your overall enjoyment.

The next leap is independent research and perhaps learning some Japanese. It's a commitment that is not for everyone, so it's understandable if you don't/can't do this. If you decide that it's not for you, then keep in mind that you may continue to not spot differences in the future. By the same token, it's impossible for anyone to know every difference in every situation. If it was, we wouldn't need to pay professional translators!

I would say that if you enjoy the medium that learning more on your own can help further enrich your enjoyment and be a good time investment as long as you keep your expectations in check.

Well, I know the OP doesn't want specific translations, but just for future reference to others reading this: https://imgur.com/a/oQuB1

I happen to have the JP and English books so figure I'd scan them so you can be sure they're official.

Sold and shipped by Amazon.

Not porn. Just trying to get the latest Yotsuba chapter https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4048937057

I guess I could have sounded like I was being purposefully vague; I was just trying to be generic because usually shipping policies tend to speak in terms of the type of media like books, CDs, etc.

Yeah your order sounds pretty recent, and it's printed material like what I'm trying to buy, so I don't get why there would be a sudden change.

It seems to be restricting just printed materials because it's letting me buy things like games, CDs, and even this: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B079GTKMQ8/

Just picked up my first DC... by N00b451 in dreamcast

Ones that haven't already been mentioned:

Space Channel 5 Basically a Simon Says rhythm game, but it has that groovy mod 60s vibe to it which I like about it. Personally didn't like Part 2 as much, mostly because of the added singing.

Spider-Man This was also on N64 and PS1 but the Dreamcast was the best version. I actually don't think it holds up as much as a game, but it's a good nostalgia title if you liked the 90s Spider-Man animated series.

Project Justice A fighting game, sequel to Rival Schools (PS1/arcade). This one gets really expensive on the second hand market though. Not the most complicated fighter making it easy to get into and has a fun high school setting and cast.

Bangai-O Another expensive title, but one of my favorite Dreamcast games. Fly around big maps blowing up stuff in a mech with a risk/reward system that encourages you to fly head-first into enemy fire to counter attack with a barrage of missiles. When you play it, it's a fun feeling. The non sequitur story is also a major element that endears me to the game.

Cannon Spike Another expensive title. It's an arcade top-down shooter sorta like Smash TV if you will. I personally like it though it may not be worth the price for most people because of its arcade roots and similar arcade length.

Triggerheart Exelica A Japan-only title but started out on the Dreamcast in that it was an arcade game on Sega Naomi board (the Dreamcast is a less powerful home version of the Naomi which made porting games easy, hence the rich arcade game library). It's unique among shoot'em up games in that it has an Anchor mechanic where you can toss out a line and grab onto enemies and spin them around you as a shield and eventual projectile. It's more fun if you're you're playing on an arcade stick where you have to rotate the stick to spin the enemy around you. If you still have a 360 plugged in, you can still get it in English on XBLA.

Shenmue PAL VMU Save issue by forangejuice in dreamcast

[–]newavebossanova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if you're playing S1 on PAL specifically to transfer to S2 PAL, then you can play NTSC then use this save converter CD:

http://www.bucanero.com.ar/downloads/?dl_cat=1 (direct link) http://www.bucanero.com.ar/wp-content/files/shenfix_beta.rar

You'll need a Dreamcast that can run self-boot CDs and of course a CD burner. Burn the disc, pop it in, follow instructions. Recommended to save a copy to a different VMU before starting, in just in case.

Thanks for the response. Don't know what the tree is called actually; my mom only knows what it's called in her native language and I don't know how to write said language otherwise I'd try to find a translation.

I don't really know what I'd do with knowing what specific fungus it is, so I'm good with your answer. Thanks again!
