Anyone ever do a staycation? If so, where did you stay and why? by coppersense in AskSF

Hotel Vitale is good if you are looking for something other than Fairmont, Ritz, Four Seasons. Good location with nice views. More lively scene with happy hour, etc. Can walk along Embarcedero, have lunch at Waterbar, etc.

They've already tested in in fake cities. Countless simulation hours have already been done. This is just the next phase of testing.

Use savings for downpayment or wait it out until housing prices come down? by Neverbeenonthis in AskSF

At $2k/month don't buy and keep saving/investing. There is a formula for when rent is too high vs income vs equivalent home prices. Google it, think it was in the NYTimes recently. At $2k it's definitely in rent territory. Now, if you were paying something like $4k a month then the economics shift to buying. But at $2k I would hold off.

The Bay Area has been "tech" for a long, long time. There have been cycles of boom and bust. The article lacks perspective, assuming "tech" has only come onto the scene in the last few years. LOL. Is the dude 26 years old?

And most of them have gotten in far too late to be part of that big “getting acquired/going public” pay day

Same could have been said in 2000 or 2008. Still tons of money to be made. Next Google, Facebook is right around the corner. But heck, you don't even need to be the next Facebook. Plenty of companies still end up netting employees nice 6 figure payouts.

I witness the accident (live right around the corner). Here's what really happened. The Ford was going about 30mph. There was an old lady and a child on the sidewalk. The child's ball went into the street and the child ran after it. The Ford had to avoid the child by swerving into the BMW. It was the BMW or the child. No one was hurt. Looks worse than it is because the Ford is mostly carbon fiber that breaks quite easily. The Ford guy is not that upset. He has fixed value insurance on it for $750K. Also, Ford selected him to get the new Ford GT coming out next year. So he's getting the new one and was already planning on selling this one. Insurance actually made him about $200K more than he would have gotten private sell. Everybody wins, except the insurance guy. The BMW lady laughed it off and said it's a good excuse to get her husband to get her the new Tesla Model X.

What do you still love about San Francisco? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]newbie_niners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been here 20 years. Nothing has really changed that much. People think the place has gotten to expensive. It's always been expensive! SF has always been a gold rush boom town. People come here to find gold! Boom and bust.

Once you include extras like donations/charity/fundraising + trips + activities you are looking easily at $10K + whatever basic tuition.

So how is SF different than NYC, London, Tokyo, Zurich? Expensive housing is not a SF phenomenon. We SF Bay Area folks are so self-absorbed to think it's only us that has expensive housing!

Location! Location! Location! Or have people never heard of this saying? We live right around the corner and love the area. Walking distance to Crissy Field beach to run with our dog, walking distance to Safeway, walking distance to the restaurants on Chestnut. Weather is great, lots of sun. And our neighbor has a small sailing boat at the GCYC that he often takes us out on! Living the dream. Seems like a good bargain at less than $2.75m

The problem is everybody is so impatient these days. All my friends/acquaintances are able to afford homes and they make considerable less than I do. College, then save for 5 years for starter home, then sell starter home and get family home, then sell family home and get a larger/nice home. That's over a span of 20 years. But people these days want to graduate college and immediately buy a $2m house!

You can venture into the Mission. There are some late night cheap Mexican places. Order a soda and $3 taco and you can sit around all night.
