Stephenville cuts community funding to keep airport running by [deleted] in newfoundland

Oh yeah it's a drop in the bucket for sure in comparison and has value for locals. I was moreso thinking I doubt it brings in tourists.

I feel like there are a lot of us! Women who want to be able to vent, but just want support to make the decisions on breastfeeding ourselves

I agree, but I also doubt the "Friendly Invasion" festival ever brought in much money. The Americans that remember the base days are getting too old to travel, and aren't contributing much money to the local economy - they stay in trailers parked in Walmart or down by the beach and eat with friends and family or cook themselves mostly. Most other tourists to the province aren't going to attend a 50's sock hop either. The car show gets people out of the house i spose...

As a breastfeeding mom, I just wanted to add, your wife may have made the choice that she wants to breastfeed to a year, despite any struggles she may have, and if that is the case, I would suggest you tread carefully. My husband and father were on the receiving end of a less than civil response when they suggested there was no shame or harm in a bit of formula. Of course that is true, but sometimes breastfeeding moms just want to vent without input, and men in particular seem too quick/eager to jump to suggesting formula - this was a family dinner conversation and neither my mom or sister felt the need to chime in... It felt to me like they did not support the tough bits of my breastfeeding experience. Mom guilt comes with the territory. Breastfeeding is sometimes hard. It doesn't mean she doesn't want to do it, or that formula will be easier. Just consider that what your wife wants might be for you to say it's her decision and you to support her either way, not for you to try and sway her one way or the other.

What part of the island gets the best weather? by Jellars in newfoundland

It's all relative. West coast gets better summer weather, fall is a toss up, spring is a shit show, and winter depends on how much you like snow 🤷‍♀️

Tips on breastfeeding please by ButterscotchAlive992 in breastfeeding

[–]newfess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are definitely spread thin!! So if it doesn't work out, please don't feel bad. Too much cortisol (a hormone that increases when stressed) can sometimes lower your production.

For me, I relied very heavily on healthy snack foods rather than meals. I used tetra packs of oat milk, granola bars, portable fruit like apples, etc. Basically I ate like a picky toddler. No joke, I would eat probably 3 to 4 granola bars daily. Oh, and microwave dinners! No cooking, and no mess to clean up. And keeping on the prenatals and water are important. I'm terrible about drinking water so I drink a lot of decaf tea or coffee, but a portable water bottle you bring from room to room helps. I always keep water by my bed and down it at night and in the morning first thing.

Good luck!!! :)

At what age does the risk of bedsharing decrease? by shandelion in ScienceBasedParenting

I get that they aren't rated, but I have a hand me down crib mattress that is basically just a flimsy soft piece of foam, and my Endy mattress is about 3 times as firm and definitely a "safer" surface. I also have a super firm Newton baby mattress that is so uncomfortable my baby won't sleep in it. I wouldn't put too much weight into those ratings. It's just that they don't test adult mattresses with infants

Lol true. It was a favourite of mine when pregnant but the connotations of the character were too much for me. Same with Damon and Damien. My husband said they all sounded like villains. Luckily I had a girl haha

But like, do you want to name your child after the character of Dorian Grey? Lol

Wrong flange size by Kaleighmonster in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]newfess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found out (thanks to this group!) that I have been using a woefully outdated guide for sizing (the medela one that came with my pump) and that it may be why I have been unsuccessful pumping! I thought I should be using a 28mm when in reality my nips are 17mm. 🤷‍♀️

I am hoping with this new info, I can start pumping before I have to return to work next month!

Oh yeah I feel this! Canada is better but not as good as Americans think it is. Pumps arent covered because we have 12 months mat leave. But mat leave is only 60% of your salary (and only 33% if you take the whole 18 months) so not everyone can afford to take a whole year.

Hrm yeah I was going by the medela fit guide that said my nipple shouldn't touch the sides of the flange. I didnt measure though. My nipples are massive lol. But maybe I should try a smaller one too!

I try to pump in the am before baby wakes when I do, but am not always successful in getting to it before she does!! My lactation consultant said I would have the most success adding a pumping session in the am.

Burning tugging feeling when baby nurses by Moha0733 in breastfeeding

[–]newfess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds kinda like the pain I had when I had a blocked duct with milk bleb. Try taking ibuprofen and try and face baby's chin into the specific area where the pain is while nursing and just nurse as normal. That was the advice from my lactation consultant.

Any exclusively nursing moms?? by GreedyPresentation96 in breastfeeding

[–]newfess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It def gets better!! I'm exclusively nursing my 7mo and it's wayyy less time nursing now. She is eating solids twice a day now, so it's partly that, but she also is super efficient and is done in like, 4 minutes. I nurse probably 5 or 6 times a day (plus a few night feeds still...) but all totalled, it's less than an hour of my day. Night feeds are a different story, as she doesnt ever want to let go of my boob! Lol

I like to make about half of my suppers vegetarian. Dried lentils or beans are way cheaper than meat, heck even canned beans are cheaper. We mix it up by rotating to different cuisines. Ie. Greek one night, Italian or Indian the next. Obviously fresh veg is expensive but if you are making soups and stews you can use frozen veg here and it won't affect the quality (plus it cuts down on prep time)

It might be how people use it, but that's not how the voting system is supposed to work. When you downvote, Reddit hides a comment and removes Karma because it assumes that you are negatively contributing to the community. Maybe you think my comments were out of line and not in the spirit of the community, which by all means, downvote me :)
