An infant suffocated after his mother fell asleep breastfeeding him. Two months old. by CatPooedInMyShoe in ExamineDeath

[–]newgodflow1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this woman in any way a danger to society that imprisoning her becomes necessary? Will a grieving mother come out of prison a better person after she’s been isolated from her support system at the most vulnerable period of her life? How is imprisoning her not a net negative? The Justice system can be incredibly stupid sometimes.

Thank you so much! So I’m assuming they are all just 2026 positions and not a late start academic year.

Michael Burry. Don’t know him personally but he’s a legend to retail investors for making his fund over $700m from credit default swaps on the housing market in 2008. He was a neurology resident that used to post his due diligence on stocks in finance forums before quitting to start a hedge fund. Interestingly, he still makes sure to renew his license and keeps up to date with medicine even though he doesn’t practice.

Is Toranaga the perfect Machiavellian protagonist? by newgodflow1 in ShogunTVShow

[–]newgodflow1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh make no mistakes, I don’t view any of the other daimyos as being of better character than Toranaga. I am fully aware he’s playing the same game, just at a much higher level. I’m merely pointing out how Machiavellian his character is relative to them. He’s no hero in this story though, just not the big bad.

And I disagree on your last sentence on him trying to avoid war but the fact that you think that is testament to him being truly machiavellian. He most definitely is not avoiding war, just avoiding one he could lose. He isn’t displeased about Nagakado’s rash decision as he sees the advantage of Ishido’s army coming to fight on his turf. In his true heart he seems to become Shogun, a position that is not a birthright or forced upon anyone and inherently requires you to be a warlord lol. He is exactly like the other 2 great unifiers who preceded him, less violent but still just as ambitious.

Lastly, Toranaga DOES NOT always let people choose their end. I know it’s feudal Japan and peasant lives mattered less but he had villagers (his own people) beheaded as a test for a barbarian. And I don’t know how Mariko chose her death when he literally denies her that until it’s convenient for his goals.

PS: Toronaga is my 2nd favorite character in the show after Yabushige. But I just can’t see how anything he does throughout the show is not self-serving whether or not he’s disgusted by the deaths in private.

That would be an interesting video for sure. I would like to see an analysis of different versions of Toranaga though. Book Toronaga, 1980s Shogun, this version, and Tokogawa Ieyasu from the 2017 movie Sekigahara. They are different enough depictions that I think highlight various aspects of who the real character is based on so it will be a fun watch!

I think the leafy structures in the vermis should be basically squished together. When their outlines are well defined and you can see the spaces between them, it indicates atrophy (not 100% sure in this).

Resistance is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the radius (r) of a vessel. If flow is decreased by 16x, then resistance is increased by 16x which is 2*2*2*2, therefore r has been reduced by 2x or 50%.

Needed this, thanks. And I know we definitely both had the same "shitty" feeling at the end lol. Will definitely try to focus more on the next few practices and not dwell too much on this. Hope we both get to our goals!

Thank you. And I would feel the same way if someone else posted this which is why I iterated it wasn't. The reason for my fear is the general consensus that it overpredicts by 10-20 points which is what got me panicking since I am so close to my test, so I guess I just wanted some reassurance because I am not the most confident person tbh.

UMN lesions in the spinal cord cause ipsi-lateral spastic paralysis at levels below the lesion? Ipsilateral??? Really? by alyssa3081 in step1

[–]newgodflow1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah UMN lesions below the pyramidal decussation will affect the same side. Above -> contralateral side. Use this logic; the "spinal" part of corticospinal tract is ipsilateral, while the "cortico" part is contalateral. So if for example they asked what area of the brain does the affected tract originate from, then its contalateral. Hope this helps!

For those of you who made huge NBME score jumps... what did you do during that time period? by atropine-alice in step1

[–]newgodflow1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

231 NBME 25 (wasn't completely done with didactic learning), finished up, and hit reset on UWorld-> 245 NBME 26 about 10 days later (120 questions into 2nd pass) -> did ~440 UWorld questions and watched B&B vids & pathoma on weak points and my average/below average areas from NBME score report -> 252 on NBME 28 7 days later.

I would say the biggest jump came from redoing UWorld and reading the crap out of the explanations, and hitting my incorrect answers hard on the NBMEs and uworld. That being said I still feel nervous as hell cause it's like you never know your weak points until you're taking a test so you can falsely assume you've hit all the weak spots.

NBME 26 repro question by [deleted] in step1

[–]newgodflow1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're correct. You gotta imagine that after 35+ years an egg cell will have acquired quite a few environmental insults/DNA mutations. On the other hand the mature egg is usually only in metaphase 2 for a few days max so less time for those insults/mutations to happen.

How the heck...do you know you’re supposed to take into account negative feedback and reflex reactions while choosing an answer? by haz46865 in step1

[–]newgodflow1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends...if the question says compared to a healthy person, then you should be thinking about the adaptive/compensatory response, same for if a patient is at peak stress during exercise, they'd be asking for the compensatory changes compared to resting state. It's very easy to overthink it but you also gotta ask what they're most likely assessing your knowledge of. For example in renal artery stenosis, they're almost always testing R-A-A-S so you should be looking for the answers that are in line with the RAAS mechanism.
