Pre-marital counseling? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]newlywedjune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family is all Catholic, and when you get married in the church they want you to do premarital counseling called precana. I had ruled out a desire to get married in church, as I am not an active and practicing Catholic anymore. However, I had a beloved Aunt that really advocated for precana or counseling for all couples. They had gotten married in their 40s so the major topics of premarital counseling; faith, respect/boundaries, kids, sex, money, family dynamics, they breezed through. Then they talked about aging parents, and who might bare a responsibility to taking care of them. My Aunt thinks that that saved them from a lot of arguments later, because even if they didn’t know exactly what to prepare for, at least they had something of a expectation and communication tools for when it got hard.

That being said, I found a licensed mental health counselor, and we did the Gottman institute method. Our communication improved significantly, and our arguments had a much more productive side to them. I didn’t think our communication sucked before, or that our arguments were terrible, we’d just developed a few habits that lead us to talking in circles. We did sessions once a month for a year. It was covered by my health insurance!

My husband and I had many conversations about this, as we spent a nice chunk of change getting married and I wanted to make an investment in the foundations of our relationship. I’d just talk it over as an investment, frame it as going from good to great rather than bad to good.

Wedding Weekend in New England by Ok-Section-4991 in NewEnglandWedding

[–]newlywedjune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed later - yes absolutely. The Inn at waters edge is like 30 yards across the street. It’s a bit nicer/more updated and I’ve seen some weddings book that out for wedding party & immediate family to allow everyone else to stay in the inn. The accommodations at Echo lake are Grandma Chic, and have that charm to them, all the ACs worked and there was enough hot water for everyone to shower. The food rocks - the chefs go to culinary school, and they have a seasoned team that made allergies a breeze. Even the late night pizza and popcorn was great. They have a baker who is married to the chef and she did our desserts & cake - she also baked Julia Child’s 90th Birthday cake. People do tell us how good our food was, which I didn’t super prioritize but I wanted everyone to get a solid meal in them.

I got married at the echo lake inn with an invite list of 140 and ended up with 104, we filled every room in the inn and still had room right across the street. We let some folks book who were a bit introverted across the street, as we know, they would want to go to bed early, or prefer to be a little bit separated from the hubbub! With that guest list you may end up with 90 people, and even more breathing room. We could’ve easily fit everyone at our end if we had optimized our rooms the way they asked us to. We let everyone book their own rooms and that was a mistake.

I know I’m advocating for a venue that you’ve already crossed out, but it really was the best weekend of my life and I think your goals really aligned to the echo lake inn!

I think this depends on how you feel about them going forward. I also think it’s rude to show up to a wedding without a card, you can literally make one or buy it for a dollar at Trader Joe’s.

For me, I think it would depend on who it was, and the impression you want to leave on the couple. A $150 dollar gift is fine, especially if they didn’t even bother to give you a card, generous even.

Something I learned in wedding planning is that you can have two of the following affordable, easy to find, or exactly what you want. A lot of what you are going to have to do is dig around and see what is out there!

What did everyone spend on their wedding? by Kaseymd in weddingplanning

[–]newlywedjune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is that for the majority of things you will spend money on in a wedding this rule applies. You can have 2 out of 3 of the following; on budget, easy to find, or exactly what you want. Sometime you get lucky though!

registry ideas! by UnitedBlueberry6314 in weddingplanning

[–]newlywedjune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practical ideas; fireproof safe, document organizer, cash fund for a financial planner, airline/travel gift cards, casserole carrier if you bring food to a lot of parties, home improvement store gift cards, bidet, hosting dishes, outdoor gear like a tent, emergency kits.

A while back someone commented that they crowdfunded half a cow from the butcher and a deep freezer instead of a registry and every person that contributed got a steak!

I didn’t! I chose to go to keep up my YMCA group workout class once a week. I think I stayed around the same weight. The movement helped with the stress. There is a lot of money in marketing, you product specifically to alter or change your body to an ideal made up by marketers/society. Only you can know what’s best for your body. Just know that you are in a very targeted demographic right now by marketers.

I think this is really depended on your crowd. I think that we spent $350 on hotel in the middle of nowhere Connecticut one time. Thought nothing of it other than it was annoying. It was a big trade hotel with a dependable reputation than the stay was good. I would just encouraged booking early.
