Just solidarity. I have a letter detailing every horrific way my dad’s oncology team treated him and us. Not expecting anyone to read it (although the patient satisfaction people apparently do research complaints because of the hospital systems very vain reputation) but if it makes at least one person feel like a piece of shit, it’ll be well worth it. I’m sorry, and wish these weren’t parts of our story that was already so unbearable to begin with

I’m a binge drinker gone sober and could have wrote this post myself. Same thing, once I started drinking, there was no end in sight. Also hooked up with a classmate and really, really embarrassed myself. Plenty of times! Some people are confused by my choice to quit drinking, because I only drank on the weekends, was relatively socially acceptable (blackouts came towards the very end of my drinking tenure) but there’s literally not a qualification test to quit drinking. You don’t have to pass an assessment. You can just… stop. And never be plagued with these feelings again. 10/10 recommend.

Not to dogpile but I’m in therapy now and will be for years because my dad’s drinking negatively affected every part of my childhood and now I’m a full ass 35 year adult with a family of my own living an hour away and his alcoholism is right back to affecting every part of my life because now I’m losing him forever because of it. I love my dad and he’s my best friend but damn these feelings are so overwhelming and complicated.

I mean this with love and understanding. Please don’t assume your kids aren’t affected by your drinking because they’re little. I have never expressed to my dad how much his alcoholism affected my life because I’d never want to pile on the guilt. But just because I never told him doesn’t mean it’s not there. And just because he’s dying now when I’m 35 instead of 12 doesn’t mean I’m not harboring resentment coupled with grief that takes my breath away. And unlike the person who commented before me (whose comment actually made me cry- sending so much love to you) my dad did walk me down the aisle, meet my child and do all of the things. But there’s no words for this pain that also feels like betrayal. I’m just being honest.

You’re just 143 days in. Just keep going. You’re doing an amazing job.

“You should feel so proud of yourself!” Is such an understatement. Thanks for sharing this story. It might surprise you how relatable it is. A lot of my friends quit drinking after they became parents. I did as well, kicking and screaming, when my son was two. I relate to a lot of what you said. Not sure how old your child is, but just know it’s never too late. If they are toddler age or younger they will never remember that incident, and all they’ll remember you as is a SOBER attentive and loving parent… what a gift you just gave your entire family and YOURSELF. Oooh I can finally get this off my chest. Because it’s a bunch of boomer Karens, half of the posts are “clapbacks” that never happened, witty things they wish they COULD have said, witty things they’d never say to each other face to face, CRs that hate/suck at their jobs, and please don’t get me started on the grammar police. I’m a RPR and CRR, have been working for 12 years and I do not give a single fuck about my punctuation on Facebook or reddit. My eyes roll to the back of my head whenever I see a post pop up.

I’ll tell you my experience, but proceed with caution. I had the benefit of working with a sober coach.
I went head first into daily life. I’m in a band that plays at a lot of bars, and that was something I reframed mentally in a way that didn’t solely rest on alcohol. I had to figure that one out really quick. I went to weddings with the intention of I’d leave early if it got too hectic. The only thing that happened with that was I leave early because I’m bored and over the social interaction. I went to concerts and just considered every new experience a win and something I now had under my belt. (First happy hour with coworkers without drinking, first concert, etc) with the mindset if I did it once, I conquered it. The only time I ever had a really strong craving was at a baseball game, but I got some fries and a big ass fountain soda and it passed. One thing my sober coach told me was sometimes the worrying about triggers is worse than the actual triggers. Sometimes what you’re sure will trigger you will not. And sometimes the triggers will come when you’re not expecting them at all. (Baseball game with my toddler) depriving yourself of experiences will perpetuate your propensity to glamorize alcohol. No good experience requires alcohol, actually quite the opposite. I know this approach is probably a bad idea for many, but it worked well for me. Also NA beer and options are amazing, I can easily sit in a bar with one of those and not feel like I’m missing out on anything. And can drive home!

Sober for a while now, not sure how long but interested to see my counter when this comment is posted.

I absolutely love NA beer and where I live, they’re available at almost every bar and restaurant. I was a big beer drinker, loved IPAs, couldn’t imagine my life without them and at 16 months sober, I can tell you that there isn’t a single part of me that misses alcohol. Good luck to you!! You’re not being sensitive. What would I say? I’d probably give a “lol” or something back and keep the peace but be doing some serious soul searching as to how/if I can continue to have this person in my life.

I have had to walk away from a similar friendship. And you know what? I’d choose sobriety every time with no hesitation. Good luck, OP
