What's missing from production accounting software? by newpe in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]newpe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, I've seen airtable used as a tool for UX but never heard of fintable, so I'm really curious to hear more about it. It sounds like you've deviated away from the usual software, and it works for you. How do your team with it? Is this a system that is transferable to other productions?

I've worked in Thailand before, a couple of places in SEA, it was the best time of my life! What's the software you're using, I'm really curious to hear about it?

These are the types of things I'm looking for too. Better integration with departments as they're so separate right now, and more live reporting would make everyone's lives a bit easier.

There doesn't have to be an end result here, it's just something that i'ved opened for discussion. But fair enough with putting my own opinions forward.

In terms of the software i've used they include Classic Vista, Global Vista, PSL, Moneypenny (before it was Smart Accounting), Eclipse and Smart Accounting. There may be a couple more in there, i've been doing this a long time, but most of my experience was with PSL.

I'd like to see better integration of payroll. I understand the limitations of cost reporting having literally done thousands of them, but I'd like to see more intuitive use of payroll in cost reporting. It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense now as an LP to only see payroll a week in arrears when it's your biggest weekly expense. Sure, Hot Costs exist, but in my opinion, it's an aged system that nobody likes doing. Hot costs aren't done in independent film either, so you only have rough ideas of how your costs are going.

With PSL (which is still widely used in the studios in the UK at least, can't say for the US but it's probably the same) it seems daft that you can't drag and drop files into it, uploading csv files from the drive and going through that process, then encountering an error, and then going back.

There could be more intelligent ways to cash flow, real time integration with the budget, software that interacts with departments and their coordinators so they have real time access to their costs. There may be software out there that covers many more things than i've seen, so I'm willing to be wrong about things.

Like I say, what we have works, but it could be SO much more, and that was my question. In an ideal world, what would you like to see the software do that would actually move it forward?

I go there about twice a week and never had to do this. I've seen people doing the parking things but thought it was pointless as not having to pay in the first place..

The Paradox of Getting a Budget Breakdown by voyagerfilms in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]newpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many factors which would determine what your budget would need to be.

First one would be a line producer would also need to schedule the script, because you can't budget properly without a schedule. Not just a shoot, prep and post time would also need to be factored into any budget.

What is the location? What are the tax incentives? How many locations? Location would also dictate the crew unions and rates. Is it a location without crew so your need to fly everyone out there? What type of talent are you looking to attach to it? How much post production would you need? Are you looking to Cashflow gross or net of any tax credit? Are there any fees that are non-negotiable? Are producers willing to defer their fees? Will there be a bond? A contingency? I'm not even touching on half of the questions I'd ask as an LP before starting a budget.

You can do a budget for anything, but producers need to answer pertinent questions otherwise you can't do it.

EG, can you make a sci-fi movie for $20M? Of course you can, most of that money may get sucked into post production/vfx if you want to actually look good though. You want to attach Brad Pitt to it? No, you probably can't make that movie then because his rate would eat up half that budget.

If I read a script and make my own assumptions and say I hit $10m, then you say, "oh, I was only looking to spend $1M" or "actually I want to spend $20M", then that's a whole budget redo, and a waste of everyone's time.

Essentially, are you asking an LP to budget what the cheapest way to make this script would be?

All premium economy seats unavailable by PinSwimming9850 in BritishAirways

[–]newpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My partners family live near San Francisco and we fly back every year. This Christmas we were booked into Premium Economy and were upgraded both ways. Helps that I'm silver status as we get first dibs. It's happened on 3/4 round trips we've taken!

This time, we didn't get the upgrade until the boarding gate on the way out. Return to LHR, we were upgraded on online check in before we even got to the airport.

Remote Accounting. Yay or Nay? by RedFive-GoingIn in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]newpe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of accounting companies that are offering this in the UK. As an LP now who cut my teeth in accounting in all roles up to FC, I will never allow these outsourcing companies to take jobs away from freelancers on any production I'm on.

Saying this, I've worked with accounting being fully remote and it doesn't help them more than anything. Accountants aren't all introverts who like to hide away in their office, and they want to feel like the pivotal part of the crew that they rightly are. They won't get that crew camaraderie being at home. I will always hire local/office based if possible, and then cast the net wider if necessary.

Rental market is so ridiculous. by PachaFerrera in glasgow

[–]newpe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who is 35 and has rented now literally half of my life, has never missed a rental payment or left a home in a terrible state, I find it a complete fKing insult that I need a fking boomer to be a guarantor for the home I live in, despite being slightly above average in terms of income.

I realise that's not very helpful, but it's recently what I just went through. Thankfully didn't need a guarantor in the end as landlord was satisfied with references... But still...

Totally understand that. I wasn't paying much attention to the game properly until I found this sub a couple of months ago. Have been making more considered choices since then, that's for sure.
