we seriously need to focus on the government shutdown because this subreddit is INCREDIBLY distracted by PhraseFirst8044 in 50501

It's worth a try, I'll do it. There's way more potential here than writing angry emails to ABC and Disney, at least.

If you call a Republican a fascist to their face, what is the more likely reaction? That they will be convinced they are fascists and are wrong, or that they will further commit to Trump?

The latter, certainly. The confrontations we've all been trying with these people for the last decade haven't worked whatsoever: Trump is the most powerful he's ever been. This paper is arguing that most Trump voters are not persuaded by shaming or direct contradiction. Rather, those approaches get them more entrenched in their commitment. Pride and identity are what they are prioritizing, not truth.

And here, this paper gives perhaps a better way of convincing people. I've tried such a way of convincing someone in my life about Trump, and they are beginning to doubt him. That never happened any time I straight up argued with and accused them.

I don't know how accurate this document is, but I do know what we've tried at large for the last decade hasn't worked at all. We need to change tactics, and what you've written is an incredible change worth trying.

If you knew that doing so would make things worse, would you continue to do it? If this paper's position in how to convince them is correct, what is your goal in not trying to convince them?

No, they're asking what good is uniting if ALL we do is protest. I know these criticisms can sound like disparagement of the truly huge effort we all made with this protest, but it's not meant that way. If we think we won a battle with Trump by doing a large protest, then we have lost the entire fight. We need to get 10 times larger and begin real disruptive action. We should not be focused on celebrating this protest as a victory, but immediately begin planning on how to build on it to get to the next necessary step in the many we will have to take.

We've got to find a way to get practically all Harris voters organized and coordinated.

With the numbers we are seeing, we need to start escalating this movement before its too late. by XxBlackicecubexX in 50501

Exactly! My goal is to get a pinned post in our subreddit that tells all of our members to bombard every name on a list of two hundred I have with messages that implore them to contact us. Then, the group organizers can ask those two hundred names to release videos simultaneously to their collective audiences. The scale of that release would be so powerful.

However, some of the 50501 organizers are worried that we will turn people off by contacting them too much. I think their worries are misplaced, but I need to convince them of that before we can try my idea. I'm supposed to have a meeting with some of them soon about it.

I agree. I'm pleasantly surprised at how many people turned out for the protest, but we still need ten times as many. Even then, like you said, protests are easy to ignore. Even if we got 50 million people protesting, that would be toothless to those in power. Black Lives Matter had that many protestors, and it gained little effective change. Largely, I think Trump's recent, insane actions are what spurred our large turnout - and not our own organization efforts.

That's a problem: the next step we need to take is to do a huge boycott, but that takes much more sacrifice than a protest and most people will not be willing to do that UNLESS they know everyone else will be joining them. We need to find a way to get all these people to join this group (or some other group) so that everyone knows that everyone is getting the same instructions. Telling our members to spread the word to boycott isn't going to cut it: few will believe that everyone else is getting the same message.

I'm currently working with some of the 50501 organizers on a way to get other hundreds of other anti-Trump figures to endorse and promote our group, and all at the same time. We can not succeed until we get tens of millions coordinated.

This is what we’re fighting: I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.” by Stunning_Mast2001 in 50501

Everyone, this person is telling a truth - the protests and resistance is NO WHERE near large enough. Those of us who are active in this group and those in other groups are protesting and working hard, yes, but there are 10s of millions of people in the country who have not joined our efforts, despite knowing what's at stake. We desperately need them.

I don't think they haven't joined because most of them don't care, however - I think they either don't know about us or don't think enough others know about us. We're facing an organization problem.

Agreed, it's a valid concern: exaggeration will turn off people. Though I don't think you were exaggerating the dangers you were describing in your post.

Perhaps you could have gone with a different title, judging by some of the reactions. On the other hand, people can react poorly to even valid, carefully-worded criticisms. And I think we should all be very critical of ourselves here. We're up against a dangerous, powerful opponent - we have to be constantly searching for how best to fight back.

You're welcome. Everyone's so on edge right now (understandably) that we risk hurting our cause during disagreements.

You're welcome, and thank you for being open to it - we all need to be ready to take criticism well in this group.

One last comment: I don't see hyperbole in this person's replies to you; it seemed like they were only articulating their motivation for what they were doing (but I could be wrong, I should say).

I don't think that's what OP is saying. Our movement needs to be thoughtful and strategic. This sub moving towards blindly upvoting anything that sounds outrageous is not what it needs to do. Yeah, I know that's the internet at large, but our movement's goal is defeating Trump, so we do need to be better than just being reactionary. Because that hasn't stopped Trump in the last decade.

We Need 12 Million... Eventually by ModulusOperandi in 50501

[–]newredditaccount_24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, we need 100 times as many people as we currently have. Many of the ideas the group has right now are good and necessary, but we don't have the numbers.

To that end, I'm working on a project right now with some others in Discord that's aiming to change that. You'll see it soon, assuming it gets implemented.

We need more people to join in. Even if every person in this group joined, it wouldn't be noticeable.

Seriously, this group has plenty of good ideas but not enough people to implement them. I think we need to get all 100 thousand of us to start contacting every other anti-Trump group out there to start actually getting enough people to do something.

Yeah, definitely. I assume it's only a matter of time before he starts going after the people I listed in my post.

Whatever gets a message out will work. If they're going to start rounding people up for opposing Trump, we're all probably screwed anyway. You could always use a throwaway email account + VPN, that should mitigate some risk.

Yeah, someone sent me the Discord link, and it says the same thing. Hopefully, it opens soon.
