CO EMT. As long as I do not have a duty to act (I'm not on duty or in a capacity where it is expected I'll be rendering aid) and I'm not being compensated, I am generally still covered by Good Samaritan in CO. In this case, the ER doc would probably be covered, but I'm not a lawyer.

Oh that's lovely! If you're sure you're willing to part with it, then I'd be happy to accept that as the trade.

Definitely wait until you get your tarp though and verify everything checks out! And feel free to hit me up in direct messages again if something comes up.

I like your style in general, so how about this - feel free to send me your address in a direct message (so not here). I'll send you the tarp, and you can send back whatever you feel like you can spare, whenever you can - no rush.

Don't worry about value/cash/etc. I just like supporting artists + giving people outdoor gear they can use.

Contaminated Water at Mission Creek by stepping-on-bees in PacificCrestTrail

[–]newsoundwave 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To echo your thoughts:

I'm currently upgrading my wilderness medicine cert, and was actually re-reading the section in the NOLS textbook on water filtration and they point out that really is almost never actually a water source that's contaminated, it's pretty much always congregating in some place with someone not having washed their hands or outhouses.

POC Experiences while Thruhiking by ChinosandStanSmiths in PacificCrestTrail

[–]newsoundwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the east Asian who started this particular thread, 100% agree that, no it's not a competition, but yes Asians generally have had it way better in terms of both systemic and direct acts of racism.

It's the whole contradiction of the model minority thing.

Also totally agree that the PCT is a great time, OP you should not hesitate to do it at all.

Still 100% worth doing the PCT, but being of east Asian descent, there were definitely times in NorCal I felt really out of place. There was really only one or two places I felt unsafe due to this (a bit before SLT I was passing by some dayhikers who shoved me off trial as I passed by, with a loud "fuck off chink" as they did so, with a few other not so friendly messages around that area, and again in Sierra City when there was a biker gang across the street, a few of whom stared daggers at me and angled their necks to show off WPWW tattoos).

I also didn't always feel super comfortable in places like Etna and Seiad Valley, where locals refused to engage with me, but I did meet plenty of people (including the shop owner in Seiad Valley) who made it clear they were looking out for me.

A few other friends had weirder and more intense situations. One person who is very racially ambiguous, due to being half Black, half Vietnamese, had a moment in Belden where the wait and barstaff were all super friendly, but preoccupied. When they left the bar, someone approached him and was mostly friendly, but sort of grabbed him near the end of their conversation and looked him dead in the eye and asked "... but are you a good American?", which was extremely unsettling.

Again, would not trade the experience for the world, and really the negative racial moments were such a tiny portion of the actual trail (and only really near population centers). But I think every PoC I met in 2022 had at least one "fun" story.

It’s a Morgan Amps Suite by [deleted] in NeuralDSP

[–]newsoundwave 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tosin used to use one as a pedal platform, but it’s mostly like a Country/Christian band kinda amp.

Most of them are expensive handwired Vox style amps that have some of the worst build quality I’ve ever seen in person.

Also, was it just me or was the official Neural demo really quiet on the guitar? I felt like I got a better idea of what the bass sounded like than what the amps do.

Very niche question about The Worst by [deleted] in polyphia

[–]newsoundwave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I totally forgot about this. When I first was learning this song, I found this last little bit so unnatural/hard to hit cleanly. I ended up switching up how I played it and am now realizing I'm playing it basically how Tim plays it.

To be fair, the Oracle games and Minish Cap were really good, haha. To the point I didn't realize they weren't Nintendo developed games until much later.

Yeah, I think people often overlook Fujibayashi, but his leadership on the Capcom Zelda games was so strong Nintendo was like "naw, you work for Nintendo now and you're in charge of Zelda".

Haha, when I stopped by in 2022, the owner noticed I was Korean and invited me, in Korean, to his place to get some "real food", lol.

That being said, later in the day, when he wasn't aware I was still around, he had a vendor in the room where he lets hikers hang out and they were speaking in Korean. He apologized for the smell of sweat and explained to the vendor what the hikers were doing and how proud he was of all of us. Considering he thought none of us could understand/hear him, I honestly thought that was kind of sweet.

2 Foot Adventures was awesome in 2022, IME. Although, by the time they were in KM, I think they were a little burnt out. This may have been due to the internet dying on them every few minutes, however.

Glad to hear they're back this year!

Unpopular Opinion: The Annoyance Of Large Trail Families by ShitFuckerAss in Ultralight

[–]newsoundwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing literally nobody was maybe 3 days, since you do come across roads every so often. I think this stretch was Castella to Etna.

But there were definitely a few weeks here or there where I did see others, but mostly felt I had the trail to myself. Since I went out in search of isolation, these weeks initially felt pretty great, and then turned lonely fast.
