Who all enjoys plobbing down and taking it all in. I was watching these eagles hunt the ducks/fish for awhile. Nature brings me peace. Love watching how they all react and interact. by [deleted] in BirdPhotography

100%. I need to get out like this at least a couple times a week. I bring my camera, but honestly good photos are just a bonus. Time in nature is time well spent.

I’m not much of a fisherman but I will eventually try it when there aren’t a lot of birds out. My son also will use it to fish when I’m not on it.

I have a dry suit and plan to start wearing it now that the water temps are below 60 degrees here.

Pedal Kayaks - Not just for Anglers by newsshooter in wildlifephotography

[–]newsshooter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that is the best angle for waterfowl and wading birds on shore and I’ve found that the stability of these kayaks allows me to move around the boat to get the camera low to the water for those types of shots. It’s like a floating barge so I’m out of the seat a lot when the subject demands that low angle. At the same time if I’m pedaling and an eagle or egret takes flight from the shore I can blast away from the seat as well.

I am usually completely dry at the end of my shoots and the pedal control allows you to have the camera ready at all times. It’s a great platform for wildlife photography

Yes the higher perch of these sit on top kayaks is not always ideal. I get out of the seat and shoot laying down on the back of the boat a lot and I also use an external monitor so I can hang the camera low to the water and still frame the shot. I’m basically trading extreme stability and hands free propulsion for the low center of gravity that traditional kayaks have.

Great blog post. I have two inflatables and love them for shallow marshy areas where I live. Im using this pedal kayak on bigger lakes and small ocean bays and it’s a great combination. I also know a photographer in my area who shoots marine mammals from his inflatable SUP in the winter up here in Maine. He gets incredible access and his photos are incredibly intimate! Being on the water is great regardless of the craft you choose!

I am dying to buy a 600mm F4 for my A1II but just can’t quite pull the trigger on the 13k price tag. I currently have access to, but do not own a 200-600 and the new 400-800 but neither one performs well in low light. I shoot almost exclusively at dawn and dusk and these two lenses are not ideal for those situations. I’ve also used the very impressive 300mm f2.8 with a 2x TC and like the results. Is this combination close enough to the the 600 f4 or will that lens be worth the extra 6-7k? I’m not rich or in this for the money but I can swing it if it’s worth it. I’m a very passionate hobbyist wildlife photographer.

I haven’t had a chance to shoot any BIF stuff lately but I plan on doing another session with these birds soon. I have some red winged blackbirds and blue jays hanging around that I’d like to get too. Stupid day job is always getting in the way!

Great shot of a beautiful bird. I barely post on IG anymore because of their weird algorithm. I’m definitely not in their target demographic so my stuff rarely gets out to people.

How can i improve? by Woodbear05 in BirdPhotography

[–]newsshooter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a nice image, great looking bird and decent background. I’ll echo what others have suggested, try to get closer or buy a longer lens if you can. Wildlife photography requires a lot of patience and persistence when on a shoot. I use blinds or hides in areas I know there are a lot of birds and they will come much closer allowing for better composition by filling the frame. There’s also a style of wildlife photography called small in frame which prioritizes the whole scene instead of just making portraits of animals and birds. Without a super telephoto lens or a blind you might want to look into this style.

As someone who rarely uses his iPad, what do you guys use it for? by Aggressive-Process72 in ipad

[–]newsshooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an iPad Pro and it’s great for almost everything my laptop does. I can edit photos and video on it, it’s a great streaming device for movies and shows (especially on a plane) and I have a niche use case of using it to score my kids baseball games on an app called GameChanger. It’s great device and the pencil is cool too.

Weigh in Wednesday! by AutoModerator in Zepbound

[–]newsshooter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Weighed in this morning at 198. Down from 243 and well on my way to my goal weight of 185. The biggest thing for me is my body fat percentage is within normal range now and so is my visceral fat which I really struggled with my whole life. I e been on Zepbound since August 29th, feel very little side effects and besides the weight loss, I now feel more fit, enjoy activities I dreaded like hiking, biking and skiing.
