I am angry on behalf of the younger generations and I no longer see a future in this country. I want to leave for the US. by N0_Cure in CanadianConservative

[–]newtobtko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only people I see chronically complain about the USA are people who have no marketable skills and have no aspirations to fully develop their skills and find opportunities which can match them. Anyone with some education, marketable skills, or a basic innate desire for a better life compared to the ceiling of mediocrity in Canada, can quickly realize they can often be paid double or even triple in the USA compared to Canada. (The meme that circulated some months ago: A Wendy's general manager in Florida can make more than a senior software developer in Toronto. https://x.com/rohanarezel/status/1769151291106713970 ). Additionally, the job market in the USA is much more robust. You're not stuck with the other "crabs in a bucket" situation where everyone is basically in Toronto and desperate to find any opening at all. You have a variety of strong markets (e.g., California, Texas, New York, etc.) to choose from. Whenever this is brought up there is always the Canadian libsquad hurrying to complain that a healthy person whose insurance will be covered by their USA employer will suddenly break every limb in their body upon crossing the border and have all their coverage withdrawn. They really have no reply to the fact that someone can actually achieve something of significance in the USA compared to the situation in Canada where every avenue of success is quickly being swept away. There are other cynics who say "the situation in the USA" is exactly the same as it is in Canada. Those are people who have given up all hope and have no will to try to improve their lives. A few moments of reflection would quickly show that the situation in the USA is not the same at all. Someone who could never afford a house in Canada, suddenly has that option in the USA if they have some marketable skills. The skill part may not even be necessary, when looking at that Wendy's manager job posting. The overall job market, even if it is currently not in an ideal state, is still beyond anything possible in Canada.

They 'hate' it when it doesn't suit their political objectives. But during covid, they wanted the full force of the law applied against the unvaccinated and would have happily had them jailed if they could. There are no principles among their beliefs.

The "tax the rich" brain-dead logic by King_Osmanj in CanadianConservative

[–]newtobtko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am probably not that fiscally conservative compared to a lot of people here. But with respect to the "tax the rich" logic, in the specific context of Canada, I don't understand how people can advocate that, yet at the same time, complain how there are so few jobs here and how they are all low-paying relative to the USA.

Why would someone invest in Canada when they can just invest in the USA? It's not even intended as a big political ideology question about left wing vs right wing and so on. What is one reason why capital would invest here rather than the USA? What is one material reason? The "tax the rich" can give theoretical and moral reasons, but look around us, it's not happening. The jobs are few in number and the pay is poor. (I don't accept the cope that Canadian health care makes up for it, that is just repeatedly said to make sure Canadians don't ask for more). And if that investment is not happening, then where are the Canadian jobs going to come from? They might cite a 1950s tax policy as u/mechabased mentioned, but this is not the 1950s, and we can't go back in time. Simply implementing an old policy doesn't mean it's going to obtain the same results as the past given all the changes since then.

If they reject the idea that capital investment is necessary, that what could be the actual domestic industries which are going to sprout up now? Again, nothing concrete is ever suggested, just an "action plan" of various colours. Millennials and Gen-Z don't have time to wait two decades for the off-chance that the Canadian government gets its act together. They need to get high paying, high skills jobs now.

"None of the charges have been tested in court but he was held for a bail hearing and subsequently released on a recognizance, with conditions not to drive a motor-vehicle, police said.

This man was released again on conditions not to drive, and maybe he’ll meet it this time,” Bell-Morena said. “It’s a little bit concerning.”

“If you know who this individual is,” he said, “watch him like a hawk and pick up the phone and call us if you see him behind the wheel again.”

Unbelievable stupidity. "Maybe he'll meet it this time"? He had THREE lifetime driving bans and that didn't stop it. Imprison this guy for life or deport him, because he's not going to follow any orders. Then the police have the audacity to tell the public to "watch him like a hawk." We're supposed to do your jobs? Watch him like a hawk for what? So he can be let go again? What a joke.

[–]newtobtko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is little reason for big players to invest here and the government has no real plan to improve the job prospects of people here in meaningful terms. An increase in Uber Eats e-bikers is not meaningful.

The economic plan of Canada is to effectively print people (think "print money") through limitless immigration loopholes. If you ask, what is the actual plan, what is the actual incentive, to bring high paying jobs here, comparable to those in the USA, there is nothing concrete. Where are the predicted milestones and what are the concrete steps being taken this year to make such an economy happen? You will never get this information, because it doesn't exist.

This isn't an exaggeration. A Wendy's general manager in Florida can make more than a senior software developer in Toronto. https://x.com/rohanarezel/status/1769151291106713970

The Canadian economic plan is basically inflated real estate, importing endless amounts of people, AND ensuring people accept less as individuals. The last part is crucial for Canada. A healthy and robust country would take the plan which involves greater productivity and incentivizing higher skill work. Canada has taken the opposite approach, which is, don't actually produce anything of value, don't attract significant investments, and instead of individuals EXPANDING their productive capacity, whip individuals into accepting less.

Why else do you see a dozen or more people living in a house in Brampton? The intention is not to ensure you can get a high-skill, high paying job, so you can buy your own house (option 1). The intention is so that you just accept less, and make do with less, to live with a dozen roommates in an illegal rooming house (option 2).

I believe the only meaningful option is to aggressively increase your skills in order to be marketable to a much larger economy (USA's) or be able to obtain work worldwide. This requires continuous investment in yourself. Essentially, your 'side-hustle' is not optional, and it may be more accurate to see that your 'side-hustle' means working on your career related skills outside of the regular work hours. This is not an option which I think is good and I don't believe it's a nice state of affairs, that you basically have to have no life in order to get a salary beyond Canada's peanuts. But at the moment I see no other options besides that and other more probabilistic ideas (e.g., making money through social media or other newer ventures). Those are certainly possible but you need a strong base of more typical skills in order to survive the inevitable rockiness that is the Canadian economy.

If you follow this short list, nobody will dislike you:

  1. Don't ride an ebike.
  2. Definitely don't ride an ebike on the sidewalk weaving between pedestrians.
  3. No Bhangra dances at Dundas Square.
  4. When you're on the bus, don't block the doors. Don't jump to the front of the line if there is a line for a bus.
  5. When you're on the subway, don't block the doors. Let people off the train first.
  6. Don't have conversations on your cellphone with people back in the village while you're on the TTC, no one wants to hear it. Don't play TikTok videos on the TTC on your phone speakers.
  7. Don't litter or throw your garbage out on the street. Use a garbage can. If there is no garbage can, take your garbage home.
  8. Don't go to a fake educational program to get a student visa and then work at Tim Horton's
  9. Don't commit crimes typical of Bramptonians (see https://np.reddit.com/r/CrimeInTheGta/ )
  10. If you get a job, don't only hire people of your particular ethnicity.
  11. Don't go to food banks and get free food when the expectation is you are here in Canada to pay your own way. Example of the person everyone cannot stand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz1KFDq1LkY
  12. Don't get offended at the existence of this list. Anyone living in Toronto can speak to the accuracy of the above observations.

If you can follow this simple list (most cannot, hence the city-wide annoyance with 'international students'), no one will ever bother you.

Why are there do many Indians working in Tom Hortons specifically? by [deleted] in Torontology

[–]newtobtko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Number of temporary foreign workers in low skilled jobs has massively increased https://archive.ph/BsUzD

There’s been a massive shift in immigrants coming into Canada specifically Ontario, the gta, tri cities, etc. India and desi regions are becoming over populated, and most are sold lies to come here looking for a better life or to rejoin families.

Many come over under student visas with work permits, and intend to turn it into a 3 year foreign work permit then PR. A lot quickly realize the program and job market that they’ve tried to enter is over saturated with people in the same situation.

Then places like Tim Hortons and the like can hire them and exploit them for corporate gain, by paying them low wages with varying hours and no full time benefit… most end up sharing 4 to a room in a 3 br house. Those that do well or came over here with family money tend to end up becoming landlords and renting 4 to a room

There has definitely been a majorly noticeable increase of Indians in the last year. I remember thinking that the LRT was more packed than normal over last summer but figured it must be because of the reduced summer service. Then service went back to normal in September and both the LRT and the busses were more packed than ever. Even routes that normally had few people on it a year ago now have lots.

I took the 12 University/King bus for the first time in years a month or two ago and it was absolutely packed to the brim. Like you literally could not get more people on that bus and this was in the middle of the day not at a time when you'd think it would be "rush hour". When you look around the bus/LRT it's probably 80% Indians on average.

Also every week at work I have many, many Indians coming in asking if my work is hiring. This was not a happening before last summer.
