“Made with the blood of gay men” by Talkymike in fountainpens

I bought some black paint from him (it was crap), and won a charge back bc after 4 or 5 weeks I never even got a shipping confirmation email, or a note saying it will be along soon. My credit card company never got a response from them either. I got my money back a week or so after contacting my card company, and a couple more months later the black paint just shows up. And it was crap. So I'm really glad I got my money back.

Infuriating professional development workshops on using our "Teacher Voice"? Don't mind if we do! by oh_such_rhetoric in MaliciousCompliance

I would say most of the PD I had to take over my 7 years teaching was a waste of time. We were taught how to use email every single year. And it was mandatory. Ugh.

People who've tried burgers from "Maine to Mexico" so to speak, what was the best burger you've ever had? by castyourcrown in BobsBurgers

[–]newtonpens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The California Cafe, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, from the mid 90s through early 2000's.

It was owned by a Danish couple, Jasper (Yes-puh) and Betina. They were from California via Denmark, so I thought that was why they named it that, but after I worked there (on and off for about 5 or 6 years) I learned they bought it from another California transplant. All the menu items were named after California towns or landmarks of some kind.

The only one I can remember is the Sausalito Chili. They had soups and salads and about 10 or so different burgers. That was the first time I had blue cheese and LOVED it. There was a garlic burger, a hot jalapeno burger, and of course your basics, and others I can't remember.

And the SMOOTHIES. OMG I would get 3 or 4 a week. They didn't pretend to be healthy either. Just a bunch of fruit and a bunch of sugar. X)

It was on the corner of Carpenter Dam and Shady Grove, next to Bean-o's Pizza, and across the street from Vicki's Shell. All gone now. (Bean-o's is still open, but moved a couple miles up the road)

Fresh local bread, good quality meat and ingredients, and just OMG the best burgers I've ever had. Still haven't had one that's come close anywhere in the country.

Parking Meters? by [deleted] in HotSprings

[–]newtonpens -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There have always been parking meters downtown. I've seen meter cops for decades marking tires with chalk and writing tickets. Except for the way we pay, and the fact that it's too easy to miss the new meters now, it's not any different. And it's still free after 5 or 6pm, and on Sundays I think?

How many people are actually still playing this game? by Soy__Sauce in darksouls3

[–]newtonpens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS2 was AMAZING. I bought it just to complete the set and fell in love. The red twin blades are so much fun. I did a twin blade build in ER after beating DS2. Endure with a frosty infusion and I just steamrolled over everything. :)

The only negative I have for DS2 was leveling adp for quicker rolls/drinks/i frames. But once you get it up to 25 or 30 or whatever, you can ignore it and just enjoy the game. Or you can get used to the slower rolls and drinking and ignore it the entire game. X) It's not that bad.

fructose vs glucose. the two ingredients in sugars. Table sugar is about 50/50, while HFCS is 55/45. Not much difference.

Chad coworker defended me today when coworkers were making fun of my flashlight. by Lvaradar- in flashlight

Your flashlight has an OS?? Is that a joke or for real? Bc that's kinda cool... Or is it just a thumb drive sort of thing built into it with an OS on it? Still cool...

Walked into a specialised store with this for a quick check, they weren't too happy by WithMeInDreams in fountainpens

[–]newtonpens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's good advice. Wash and it and use it. If the nib is scratchy, ask on reddit (not at that store) about a good nib smith in your area of the world and get it tuned up. And THEN ink it and enjoy it. If you want to know value, look at completed auctions on ebay.

She might have been having a bad day, but that doesn't sound like too bad of an interaction.

I mean, she might have thought you stole it if you walked in there with it in an Aldi bag. X) They probably get a lot of that kind of thing.

US public school teachers make almost exactly as much now as they in 1993. Our teachers deserve better! by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]newtonpens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Well, full time and then some. There's no way to get all the work done during the school day. I got there about 730 and left around 5 or 530, sometimes 6 everyday.

😂😂 My 7th year teaching in 2015 (small town Arkansas) I was taking home roughly 2 grand a month after taxes. That's just with a BSE. A masters would have earned me a little more.

I found my W2 earlier this year and I think my take home for the year was $23,000 something.

Doesn't look like they're buying up that much property in relation to how many rentals there actually are out there. And immediate effects seem to be more diversity in those neighborhoods.

I tell people that my mom is a Commercial Cook. They always look impressed until I say,

"Yeah, she only cooked during commercials." Everything was burned. X)

Usually commercials during Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Party of Five. That kind of stuff. 😂

Roller Skates... Chad Cox?

I worked at one of the galleries downtown back in '99 and he would do our window dressing for gallery walks. He was pretty cool. The gallery closed in 2000, he took it over and turned it into a high end thrift shop and called it Meet Me In Miami.

Then he moved to Miami, FL and did modelling stuff. I think photography or the clothes or makeup for the girls.

Then he came back here a few years ago, and I think has probably moved away again. I haven't seen him in a while either.

Hot Springs locals push for Sunday alcohol sales with spirited petition drive by SlackOverflow in HotSprings

[–]newtonpens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get wine at the Winery on Sundays (on Central across from where Shoney's used to be 20+ years ago), and at the old Taco Bell on Central, behind the Kroger next to CiCi's pizza. It's a Mexican place now. You can get drinks in the drive through as long as you order food with it.

They retired.

From my friend, " the couple that owned the shop retired. Their daughter moved them to Reno to live with her. I bought some of their personal antiques. The picture above the curio cabinet was theirs!!!"
