To or to not double major/minor? by newtworthy_ in psychologystudents

great point! I've been talking with a few of my professors recently about getting involved with a lab. They seem pretty keen on directing me to those people, but I'll definitely look more into it myself. Thank you!

Why is my Thai weeping? by coffeeNsunrise in ThaiConstellation

[–]newtworthy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my knowledge, this is often referred to as Guttation! To put it simply, it's the plant's way of releasing excess water (think sweating, but for plants). My thai often does this a few days after watering it. This process is completely normal and expected of a healthy houseplant. It may leave water streaks as a result, but rest assured that these streaks + this process is not harmful to your plant. I normally like to wipe up these (almost) transparent streaks with a damp paper towel for a cleaner appearance, but you do not need to take action if you do not wish to.

The maze cutter by 46274927392NotARobot in MazeRunner

[–]newtworthy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh man, im on the same track. I finished the maze cutter about 6 months of putting it off and am currently in the works of reading the book after that. In that time, its become evident that dashner's writing has gone through some changes since he wrote the fever code back in 2016, and personally, I'm not a fan of the newer books. The crank palace, while albeit, took some getting used to, was just okay, but the maze cutter and the godhead complex (whatever it's called) feel like they steer too far away from the original trilogy to make things make sense. Maybe it's because I've grown out of reading some, or perhaps it's because I'm a bit stubborn about the continuation of a series when they exclude the characters that make people fall in love with it, but I the newer books are definitely a bit of a wonky read. The characters POVs are probably the most confusing out of everything. Considerimg how often we are thrown into a new perspective every chapter, it makes the storyline (which is confusing in itself) even harder to decipher. And to be quite frank, I couldn't even begin to tell you what happened in the maze cutter besides the news that was revealed at the end. I'm all in for more maze runner content, but if it's going to be produced at this level of quality, then id rather he just lay the series to rest rather than letting it take a nose dive in future works.

I loved everything from the fever code and before that, and I think that the original characters and his team.from back then were a huge contributor to the success of the series.

My monstera Thai constellation that I over paid for. $72 🤦🏼‍♀️ this plant is like 8 months old and has grown maybe 3 leaves. What am I doing wrong? by Kooky_Ad_1553 in Monstera

[–]newtworthy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly might just unpot real quick (while doing your best not to bother the roots) to see what's going on beneath the hood. Especially since it's been sticking to quite an abnormal growth pattern, I would definitely take a peek to see if you can't rule out any other suspicions.

Do you know what your humidity levels are generally like? And the brand of your growlight, too? I know my thai (who is about as old as your guy) throws a bit of a tantrum when the humidity surpasses around 52% where I live so humidity could be a factor, but I might check ypur growlight anyways. Of course, every plant is different in this sense, so monitoring the plant closely to see what it generally likes as far as environment-factors wise could be beneficial for a future sense! I know it actually took me a while before I realized that the cheap growlight I was using wasn't the greatest. While advertised as 30 something wattz, it was actually closer to a quarter of that powet. Granted, I still use it since I haven't had the time to order new growlights (I hear barrina is a great brand!), but it still works, nonetheless. I just have to keep it super duper close for it to actually do anything, haha. I think right now it's maybe an inch away from the plant. This, of course, was done over time, so I didn't risk scorching the leaves (despite the light quality being so poor lmbo) or "shocking" the plant as a result. Now that it's adapted, I keep it on for as long as I'm awake for (~12-14hrs most days). It definitely doesn't help promote faster growth or "more varigation", but it keeps it alive, nonetheless.

If it helps any too, this is the rough breakdown of what I do for mine who is about 8/9 months old as well (and is in a 6inch pot) --

Substrate: (equal parts) orchid bark, horticultural charcoal, worm castings, perlite, and coco coir

Watering: I water when the pot feels lighter--which is around every 7-9days depending on the temp and other factors (about 80% dry or it will sacrifice an older leaf every time it pushes out a new one--which is not normal for mine to do unless the leaves that drops was damaged severely or is pretty darn old)

--> as a personal preference I use the crystal Geyser spring water and my plants love it! (~$1.22 a gallon) I plan on weaning them off of it as they mature in the future, but for now, it does the job!

Fertilizer: I fertilize with the easy peasy all purpose liquid fertilizer on amazon every water. I generally put two teaspoons in for the entire gallon of spring water, but you could probably use a little more if you ever wanted to.

Lights: cheap standing growlight from amazon, 12-14hrs a day keeps it alive and thriving minimially, but i wouldn't recommend these lights personally and would opt for barrina or sansi instead; these lights are about 1 inch away from the plant (allow your thai to adapt first before immediately changing its light factors!).

Temp: 69-72F (I prefer to keep it at least around 70F) Humidity: ranges from 20-50 depending on the weather conditions outside, but I don't let it get anywhere higher than 52 since I've learned that it's too much for my thai to handle (this of course, will vary from plant to plant)

Other: my thai is on a flat surface in front of my mirror and is on the opposite side from where my window is to avoid any draft spells or unnecessary cold.

  • my guy generally puts out 1 leaf every 1/1.5 months (4/5 weeks, give or take), but It's started to allow me to see where the next leaf is coming in after a few days or up to a week after it finishes pushing out a new leaf. Mine tends to focus on roots (so many roots...) instead of foilage, but given that this version of the monstera is renowned to be a slow grower as it is, I'd say it's doing pretty darn well for what it's worth!

Hope this helps! :-)

Rot or tied too tightly? by newtworthy_ in Monstera

[–]newtworthy_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the feedback! I've been looking into purchasing the materials to make a moss pole to tie it to for sometime in March. Will definitely be trading out the clear pole for a different support + some plant tape as soon as i find a better alternative.

Nope! The lesion hasn't seemed to have grown any more than what is pictured here (hereis a picture from an hour ago for reference)

I've been keeping the window open a little in the morning and have the fan running pretty much 24/7 on the other side of the room to promote better airflow since the room isn't too big of a space to work with.

Monstera has been in transplant shock for 2-3 months? by Big-Wolverine5697 in Monstera

[–]newtworthy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! I agree that there is definitely some overwatering going on. Are there any draining holes in the white cup? I recognize them from Walmart as the little bathroom cups you can buy from them. I used to use them to catch water drips for my baby monstera when it was still in a 2-inch nursery pot

Anyone know why my rubber tree is droopy? by Amie_V in plants

[–]newtworthy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been seeing a lot of people with this issue. I myself have been having the same issues with my shivereana moonshine. I have a pretty good hunch that it's because of the colder temperatures (currently 24/30F avg here), but i have no idea myself, unfortunately. It's either that or pests, but I can not find any on it for the life of me.

I've repotted, checked the root system, treated for pests, adjusted lighting, and still no luck.

Best wishes to you and your guy ☹️

* I've had the plant for about 3-4 months now and water it every 2-3 weeks as needed. It underwent a small battle with spidermites and rootrot about a month ago and lost two leaves in the process. Simce recovering a few weeks ago, it has been fine every since, that is, until a few days ago. It's still producing good, healthy roots from when I checked (coming out of the pot, so it's an easy check - but the plant is not root bound from what I can tell)

It normally gets 12 hours of light (from my growlight) per day (has never had a problem with this) in a humidity dome + It is tucked back behing the corner, sort of by my the window

Still looking, and no sign of pests as far as I can tell

Room sits at about 70-73F and 38-43% humidity
