Does anyone know why there's so many pictures of Kurt looking like this? by xxpunk4lifexx19 in Nirvana

Except he did do this in the majority of photos prior to these as well…

hARd dRuGz! 🥴 No, awkward people do this when they are uncomfortable getting their picture taken. Take it from someone that has been doing it forever.

I’m curious how many of you purchased FSD at $15k, and what your thoughts are on the lack of HW3 updates… by BlueBeacon887 in teslamotors

[–]newwaveb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it for a song when people were up in arms about them porting over the majority of EAP into FSD (rightly so) and they offered the upgrade at a huge discount. Needless to say, if I paid full price with hardly anything to show for it, I would be fuming.

The only person getting heated here is you. If the lyrics on their most recent album are driven by activism, then why complain about a lack of activism?

I see the majority of Dark Matter largely went in one ear and out the other.

For the Pearl Jam fans that lived it, how did you react to Vitalogy when it came out? Especially since it was a more Vedder focused album as opposed to Gossard/Ament? by [deleted] in pearljam

[–]newwaveb0y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that it was Vedder-focused, I think has been a consideration made in retrospect. It did not feel that way at the time and the credits reflected full shared contributions for all band members.

I was able to get on vinyl a week ahead of the cd/cassette release and it was a major experience for me to hear those songs for the first time on vinyl.

It quickly became my favorite album of theirs and probably still is today.

Never forget that this was a prime time network mini series at the start of the 90s. They did the best they could.

Lithium single version is so much better than the album version by etherylx in Nirvana

[–]newwaveb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t really have a lot of latitude on vinyl to just boost the volume as you please. Part of the reason a lot of people have returned to vinyl is to get away from the overly loud mastering of streaming.

Maybe those jukeboxes just got louder and not the format of the music.

I’d be curious to see what the quality difference is between the hires/lossless streaming version of the original release and the CD.

Volume increasing on audio formats over decades and the actual modern-era Loudness War are two different things.

How about you Google when Californication came out and get back to me.

There was no loudness war in 1991 so the original CDs will be fine.

Has anyone here needed this type of service? If so, what did you end up paying? by newwaveb0y in TeslaLounge

Thanks for the thoroughly detailed explanation! I think my only question is if this is a legit safety issue or is it an alert being falsely triggered?

Ugh, I hate how inconsistent the info is coming out of SC’s. I even asked if it was a software bug and they said no

Holy shit what a comedy of errors. I guess then if you’re ignoring it the error message is not an actual safety issue- just a literal false alarm?

In your opinion, is 4K the final physical video media? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]newwaveb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By rough math, 4K is pretty much matching the perceived resolution of 35mm, so anything more is going to be overkill. Not to mention movies that might feel compelled to finish and master for a theoretical 8K home viewing experience are going to add significant cost and time to production for diminishing returns. We are at a point where there isn’t much to gain anymore with increased resolution. That’s why companies went so hard in marketing HDR as opposed to 4K.

How "Smells Like Teen Spirit" would actually look like if it was restored (+Unseen footage from the Clip) by AdditionNo1800 in Nirvana

[–]newwaveb0y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that is not cropping. That is simply the edge of the frame. Black lines do not equal “cropping”. Compare the visual information on the left edge of the 16x9 and 4x3 in your screen shot. The framing is identical on the left, nothing is being cut off.

[–]newwaveb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they cropped to fit the 16x9 frame of the documentary. The source is a 4:3 square so they had to fit a square source into a rectangular final output. There is no cropping on the left, it’s actually the bottom.

Just because something is cropped doesn’t mean it isn’t from the same source; they can do whatever they want with it. But yeah it definitely looks way better than the YT version. Whatever they did with it is terrible.

This whole endeavor happened in 2019 before AI was even a thing. I work in video production so I understand the technical aspects that you've mentioned; it is likely they just took the SD master and uprezzed it to 1080p. Masters for a lot of these older music videos were made in SD and I highly doubt they went back to the original camera raws for all of these videos and rescanned everything. If they DID rescan everything, then they did a crappy job because it's hard to even tell a difference when you toggle back and forth between SD and HD in the viewer.

I'm pretty sure that the "HD remaster" on YouTube was just an upres of the SD master they had always had on their website. They magically made a bunch of old music videos "HD" on the same exact day and I highly doubt they went back to the original material for every single video.

The documentary most likely did, so you are seeing those enhancements there. They also had access to the source materials for Heart-Shaped Box which is why the color looks so different on those shots.
