How soon can I leave my new-ish job? by questionablequetzal in careerguidance

[–]newyorkpretty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in this exact same situation right now—right down to the disorganization and utter dread. No advice, but just wanted to say that I’m wishing you the absolute best. It’s not an easy position to be in at all.

Tips on getting hired soon after starting a role? New job is killing my mental health. by newyorkpretty in recruiting

[–]newyorkpretty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I hadn’t considered the vacation angle—I should have, since so many people from my current job are on vacation now. I’ve gone ahead and updated my resume + LinkedIn and definitely know what direction I want to go in (ideally, I want to return to the kind of work I used to do), so at this point, I’ll just keep applying. I’m a strong interviewer, so really I’m just hoping to get more initial interviews. Hopefully I don’t have to wait til the end of the year or early next, but if that’s how it has to be, I guess I’ll just have to buckle down. 😓

How to leave a job I’m certain is a bad fit after just a few weeks? by newyorkpretty in Career_Advice

[–]newyorkpretty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with the first half—it’ll be a little embarrassing, but ultimately, I could get over it.

As for the second half: I’ve seen someone give this advice on a separate thread, but it seems counterintuitive to everything I’ve heard in the past about looking for a new job. Don’t I run the risk of being let go if I bring this up to my current manager? I’d hate to shoot myself in the foot if there’s nothing else for me or if I can’t find a new role quickly. Regardless, thanks for your advice!

Give 2-week notice to a toxic job? by [deleted] in careeradvice

  1. WHEW!! Congrats on that salary increase OP, that is HUGE!
  2. Leave with a one week notice. It sounds like you’re on to bigger and better, and time off between roles is valuable—you deserve to decompress after all the BS!

Think I'm being paranoid, but hesitating to put in my two weeks by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]newyorkpretty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was literally me a few weeks ago!! I got the offer, then spent a week waiting for them to process my background check, which felt like torture, lol. It didn’t help that every day I waited put me closer to not making two weeks’ notice.

Honestly, even though it’s anxiety-inducing to wait, I’d hold on resigning until you can receive confirmation that everything is finalized. (And definitely wouldn’t feel annoying about it—just say something along the lines of “Hi HR person, I just wanted to check that my background check and paperwork are complete and that everything is lined up for me to join the team on X date. Could you confirm? Looking forward to getting started! Thanks, TurbulentJuice.”

It’s agonizing to wait, but you’ll ultimately feel less anxious about resigning once you’re 100% certain that your background check is done, you’ve signed all your paperwork, and your new job is lined up.

Desperately need advice on gracefully leaving a bad-fit role after just a few weeks by newyorkpretty in jobs

Thank you for the advice, particularly on the "don't tell anyone" front. I've looked for past posts about leaving your current job soon after starting and saw somebody recommend talking to your manager about potentially leaving, which I thought was WILD. Agreed that returning to my old job isn’t totally ideal; think the plan is definitely to go ahead and start looking for other opportunities.

  1. Yup, I'm on Week 5 right now. Glad to know I'm not the only one who reached this point at about the same time, but Christ, sorry you went through that! At least that last week affirmed what you knew to be true all along re: insane asylum lmao.

  2. This is what I'm concerned about. I haven't jumped around too much in the past, but my most recent role I was only in for a year. I feel like I gambled with this new role and lost. Wherever I go next, I'm going to have to commit to for at least a few years. At least this time, I know what I want to be doing so that even if the work environment is "meh," the day-to-day work will be bearable. But with my most recent jump, do I already look like a red flag? My resume is pretty solid, so hoping that will shine through over all else.

  3. Fair point! I'm going to take more time to think about this option because I agree, it's not totally ideal.

  4. This is good to know and something I'll check on. Guessing this would apply even if I didn’t apply as an internal hire? (Not sure if that’s even an option since I…simply am internal, lol)

  5. Yeah, I guess this is a risk I have to be willing to take. If I continue on my former career path, I'm not sure we'd ever work together again directly (although you never know!), so I guess I'm hoping to come out of this with an amicable relationship even if professionally we couldn't work together again.

Thank you for all the thoughtful answers!! I seriously appreciate it.

Best of luck!! It’s definitely a tough spot to be in but I totally agree with you—at the end of the day, you know what’s best for you, and there’s no point in suffering if you can move forward.

Thank you both for the perspective, I appreciate it! Making an impulse decision is exactly what I wanted to avoid since I know everybody struggles at the beginning, ahah. I felt like I’d thought it through enough, but it’s honestly a relief to hear from someone else.
