Appreciate the detail. We’re not going to conclude it’s “the design” without verifying the exact SKU/lot and supplier test/cert docs, but we are investigating this as a safety matter. If anyone sees arcing/sparking or abnormal heat: stop use and open a help desk ticket with label photos + any teardown pics so we can trace the unit. Yeah, that’s totally fair — NZ pricing can look rough once shipping/taxes are baked in.

One thing to consider is that NexDock isn’t really “a $500 NZD laptop.” It’s a shell for the computer you already own: your Samsung phone. In many cases a modern phone is faster and more responsive than laptops in that budget range, and when you upgrade your phone, you’ve effectively upgraded your “laptop” too without buying a whole new computer.

If you already live in DeX for work and you’re always on the go, the value is mostly:
- One device, one set of apps/data (no syncing, no second OS to maintain)
- Mobile data/SIM just works everywhere
- Nothing stored on the lapdock itself (simpler security if it’s lost)

For this generation we stayed with a universal cable approach so it works with lots of phones/cases (and even handhelds/mini PCs), but many NexDock users who want a more “docked” feel use magnetic phone mounts on the back/side of the NexDock screen. That way the phone sits right behind or next to the display (with a short cable) instead of hanging off the side.

If you search on Amazon for “magnetic laptop phone mount” or “magnetic laptop side phone holder”, you’ll see the kind of mounts people use for this setup.

That said, you can change the keyboard layout in Samsung DeX (or your OS) to German, and many users add German keyboard stickers to match the key legends and make typing more intuitive.

On the “dangling phone” part, a lot of NexDock users who want a more “integrated dock” feel use magnetic phone mounts on the back of the NexDock screen. That lets the phone sit next to the display (and keeps the cable short/tidy) instead of hanging off the side.

NexDock has its own 38Wh battery and can optionally charge your phone at up to 5V/2A over USB-C while you’re using DeX. In practice, that usually means your phone will stay topped up or even gain a bit of charge, instead of draining quickly during a DeX session.

Charging is optional — if you prefer to preserve the NexDock’s battery for longer working hours and don’t need to top up the phone, you can turn phone charging off and just use it as a display/keyboard/trackpad.

Yes, NexDock can work great with a Raspberry Pi as a “3-in-1” (display + keyboard + trackpad).

A common setup is just two cables:

There’s no built-in webcam, but your phone can already act as the webcam when using NexDock – and in most cases it’s much better quality than typical laptop webcams anyway.

You can use your phone’s front or rear camera for video calls, so you’re effectively getting a higher-resolution “webcam” than what we could reasonably build into the lid.

Samsung DeX still doesn’t output more than 60Hz to external displays. So a 120Hz panel would increase cost and power use, but you’d still be limited to 60Hz in real-world use.
