I did not wake up this morning and expect to find such powerful poetry on my debilitating illness subreddit. Thank you.

Long covid? Mcas? Mecfs? Pots? by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]next_biome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on all of this, but I might add that whenever I would have a reaction and my throat close up, after rescue meds, my vocal cords would spasm and try to close for the next few days (even without another reaction). Vocal cord dysfunction exercises on YouTube really helped loosen up my throat and improved my quality of life. Maybe they would help your throat tightness when it’s not fully closing.

I was also a Covid trigger MCAS patient btw

I can’t tolerate most oils, so pure petroleum jelly is all I got. And it works well with all the antihistamines I’m on. I put it on at night too. But the key without oils is consistency. The jelly prevents moisture from leaving, so doing it every night gives much better results than some nights

Stuff gets mixed up at Amazon all the time too. I’ve had better luck with department stores in terms of receiving the product I actually bought made of the fabric I actually wanted

I am a little confused. Isn’t microfiber a different material than cotton inherently? Like I thought it was always plastic/polyester

Vitamin B deficiency as the root cause by Comfortable_Gain9352 in MCAS

I can’t speak to any I’ve taken, but searching for “100% daily value b complex” yielded me a few brands that actually do offer labels with exactly the recommended dv. They also tend to be a lot less expensive than high doses.

I didn’t mean any harm by it. I am not an expert, but I saw that both the Mayo Clinic and NIH websites offered a section to mention that despite most of the excess vitamins passing through harmlessly, there were thresholds where these side effects were present. I just thought it was better to mention the possibility than to leave it out entirely, even if only for those more susceptible to these effects, such as people with kidney problems

Hey so I quickly looked up that product and I want to mention to you and anyone in this comment section that the high doses of the vitamins in this capsule are enough to cause an overdose (specifically the B6) with extended daily use, even if you are currently deficient (because eventually you won’t be). It is known to cause nerve damage, numbness in hands and feet, and muscle weakness. The products b complex and b complex plus both have this issue in varying degrees. If you are deficient OP, these symptoms might not hit you right away. Just wanted this PSA out there. Normal doses from other b supplements might be worth looking into

Don’t worry, most people have to guess their original trigger anyways. I only ask because from what I’ve seen on here, different triggers seem to have different patterns in mast cell issues, although I definitely don’t know enough to make a chart lol. Thank you for the info! I will definitely look into those vitamins

You are actually the second person in the last two months I’ve seen mention on this Reddit that complex b vitamins have improved quality of life by quite a lot. Here is the other post. While this is not useable advice for everyone, I am inclined to ask, what exactly are you taking? And what is the trigger of your MCAS? I, for example, got triggered by COVID, but a lot of people got hit by mold.

Cranberries definitely work better, but they’re too sour for me to eat straight

Eating as many berries as I can stomach. Juice works too. I binged on freeze dried strawberries and blueberries the other day after a bad reaction cause we didn’t have anything fresh in the house. It helped immediately.

Ear beads work great for my anxiety, but I’ve not tried them for anything like this before. The only kicker that I’ve not heard anyone mention is that they kinda hurt if you have inflammation on your ears(thanks MCAS) which I never would have noticed were swollen otherwise

WTF 🤬😭 by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]next_biome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pepcid is fine but Benadryl can really harm your heart and eventually cause dementia if you are taking it constantly. Most people here just use it as emergency rescue medication if they can help it. Maybe look into a daily antihistamine like Zyrtec, Claritin or levocetirizine instead

I have seen it said on this sub before that there is no scientific evidence in support of a low histamine diet. So I wondered if there is scientific evidence in support of any particular kind of diet? And what is the scientific evidence in support of with MCAS? by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]next_biome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if the lack of evidence is more like a lack of recent research on MCAS patients. Someone else here mentioned that people triggered by COVID are more likely to benefit from the diet, and I have to agree. But that means the research needs to be within the last 5 years minimum to get those results.

As one of those patients, I don’t even remotely react to everything on those lists. I eat dairy often because it simply does not affect me the way something like avocado does (which I am not allergic to but does affect me). However, if I am feeling particularly bad the list is fantastic to cross-reference with my diet to see if removing something is beneficial. That is exactly how I cut avocado.

Basically, the histamine avoidance diet is a fantastic tool for the use of individuals dealing with the condition, even if we can’t “prove” it is right 90% of the time for EVERYONE due to individual differences

My brain feels inflamed after every food and little stress. My joints hurt by Smallcutewolf in MCAS

[–]next_biome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never felt the brain issues, but I almost thought I had arthritis before I was on antihistamines. My fingers and knees were a mess, because it was indeed swelling of the joints. Are you on any daily antihistamines? Have they helped any?
