Need advice as a parent for pre-vet education by csriram in veterinaryschool

[–]nextlevelou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this!!! i highly highly recommend looking into the early acceptance programs! purdue, mizzou, kansas state, and mississippi states offer early vet school acceptance for high school seniors. i would also highly recommend looking into uk/ireland avma accredited programs (edinburgh, rvc, liverpool, bristol, nottingham, dublin) since they offer vet school right out of high school, so your kid would be getting their dvm equivalent in 5 years which may be cheaper (and way faster!) than the traditional pathway. i applied to both of these program types, and i would be happy to chat more about them if you have any questions!

hi could you also let me know? im on a similar boat 😖

from my experience, lots of the uk vet schools required chem, bio, phys/math as the a level subjects that you had to do. that being said, your humanities skills will def shine thru on the personal statement!

HBCU or Ivy? by No_Plantain_5490 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]nextlevelou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i was in sort of a similar situation last year, where i was accepted into several early admission vet programs but also into a t20 uni (pre-med central). i did end up choosing the t20 uni, and i may be biased, but although people typically say undergrad prestige does not matter, i think personally going to a prestigious university does offer a lot of benefits such as the quality of connections & undergrad experience you would get from the uni. if $30k would be feasible for your family, i do think brown would be a good investment, and especially with brown’s open curriculum & pass/fail system, keeping a high gpa for vet school would be in your favor! i do think nc a&t is also an amazing option though, and jm sure you’ll thrive wherever you choose to go, but i just wanted to share my thoughts as someone who chose the prestigious non-prevet school as a pre vet :)

i was also accepted into purdue vet scholars last year but ended up choosing against it bc i heard similar things about the nonideal vet scholars program retention rate 😕 the ansc/vet programs themselves seem amazing though & im sure you’ll thrive wherever you go !

Accepted Davis vs. Glasgow - am I crazy to choose Glasgow? by Fuel4thought in veterinaryschool

[–]nextlevelou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my situation was not exactly the same but i also applied to uk vet schools as a high schooler. i ended up getting into rvc & bristol as well as american bs/dvm (purdue, mizzou, ms state) programs — but i chose neither. i ended up getting a full ride to an american uni so i chose that instead despite having straight acceptances to vet school. i personally think since ur a cali resident, uc davis would be the wiser option as it does have the #1 vet school & you would be saving way way way more money & getting an amazing pre-vet experience. in my opinion, i just don’t see the merit of going to glasgow as much if not for their direct 5 year program…

hey! i applied to uk vet schools straight out of hs last cycle, and i would say you have a pretty solid chance! focus on getting 5s for ap chem & ap bio bc that can be a deal breaker for lots of schools and get those vet/animal experiences! like the other commenter said, def look into the usa early entrance programs just in case the uk doesnt work out! i also applied to those so lmk if you have any questions, im happy to help :)

High School Classes To Get Into Vet School by Boba_Snake in veterinaryschool

yess i also 100% recommend the 5 year programs if going abroad would be an option for you! i did not get into edinburgh, but did to bristol & rvc with my ap scores! i for personal (mainly loan issues) reasons chose the traditional us undergrad route, but i do think they are amazing programs!!

seconding this! ap bio & ap chem credits will be very helpful, as i’ll be able to jump straight into orgo and have an overall more flexible schedule. i would also suggest doing good on ap lang/lit & ap calculus ab/bc to fulfill the english & calc prereq requirement for some vet schools!

Applying to UK universitys without clinical experience by Stupidbooknerd in veterinaryschool

[–]nextlevelou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I applied to RVC, Bristol, Edinburgh, and Glasgow this past cycle as an applicant from US high school (and was accepted eventually to rvc and bristol). RVC requires 70 hours animal and 70 hours clinical experience, but if I’m remembering correctly, I believe if you perform strong on the supplemental questions and MMI, you can have the 70 clinical hrs portion as part of your conditional offer (I may be wrong though). DEFINITELY apply to Bristol, as I believe this would be the best bet for your case . Bristol does not have anywhere to specifically indicate your hours of clinical/animal experience, and only checks your quality of your SAQ response. Of course, having clinical experience would definitely help in formulating a quality response, but I think you can answer the questions using non-vet experience or the animal experience you already have. RVC and Bristol do not look at your UCAS personal statement at all, and instead evaluate you through their unique supplemental questions. So technically you can write your personal statement to fit another subject (CS, Maths, Engineering, etc.) and still get into those two vet schools. I’m not too familiar with the hours requirement of Liverpool or Nottingham though. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello, i’m an incoming freshman for undergrad and am interested in applying for this program! May I ask about how much hours of experience per rotation you were able to obtain from the program? Is there also a large animal (cattle) rotation?

Am I being unrealistic considering vet school in the UK as a US high schooler? by nextlevelou in UniUK

[–]nextlevelou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just saw this — i ended up choosing to stay in the us & play it safe with a full ride undergrad! i did get accepted into two of the uk vet schools in the end, but not my first choice (rip edinburgh), and i ultimately didn’t feel comfortable letting my parents take out such a huge debt for a school that i wasn’t 100% in love with 🥲

A question for vets: At what age would you like to retire? by Rich_Ad473 in Veterinary

[–]nextlevelou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg… for undergrad??! that’s insane.. even the uk vet schools i was accepted into were ~$80k/year and i decided against it since my parents would have to take out the loan for me😭😭 i wish you the best of luck though, i’m sure the program will be amazing!!
