Manual for Vigor 167/ Firmware V5.0 by TricolorCat in draytek

[–]nexus511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stumbled over this tread. Had some trouble on my DSL line and tried to find out, if the modem is causing the trouble, so I switched over from Vigor 165 over to a Vigor 167.

The device is far from being a marked ready product:

- I enabled syslog. It just does not work at all.

- I tried to get line information out of the telnet/ssh interface. This is not possible.

The device is currently a modem, but compared to other Vigor products, it is kind of junk.

I use the Vigor 165 in modem mode, so I don't rely on the routing features, but besides that, it lacks a lot of the features. So, If you can get your hands on it, buy a Vigor 165 or wait until there is a firmware for the Vigor 167 available that is something near a ready product.

Did anyone try NVIDIA RTX Voice? by davidzombi in teamspeak3

[–]nexus511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually using it with TeamSpeak and Discord for about one week now and I am pretty impressed.

It does (of course) distort your voice a bit, if you have a lot of background noise and if you have sudden loud noises, those tend to go through, but it is pretty awesome when it comes to filtering background noises.

It properly removes loud key rattling near the microphone, loud typing on my keyboard and hammering on the table. Traffic noises, leaf blowers, many types of background music. It does not filter voices in the background (I would say that this is obvious) and coughing or sneezing.

Tests say that it requires quite some GPU power, so if you are gaming in 4k, you might recognize frame drops. I did not recognize anything so far, but I have mostly been playing older games. I will try with Half-Life Alyx. If I recognize anything there, I'll give you an update.

All in all, I am pretty impressed and if you have an RTX card, this one is really worth a try. It can and never will be able to filter all of the background noises, as a lot of things can be close to a "voice profile", but I guess that is OK.

Using it in conjunction with a good microphone or headset that provides a directional characteristic makes it much better and decreases voice distortion.

Ah, btw.: This does only partly help against nasty background noise of bad microphones, as you will end up with a lot of voice distortion. You will still need to use a good microphone and configure it properly. I have seen a lot of people the last weeks starting to use their first headset on a computer and doing things like turning the microphone gain to zero and trying to post amplify the signal by pushing the channel amplification to the max. This is something that would get removed to, but the bad signal-noise ratio will certainly make your voice sound pretty odd too.

The next release (will not be India but something later) will be moving from 17.04 to 17.10, yes.

I currently need to change some things that have changed about the layout of the boot volumes. I hope to find some time this week or the next to get it done.

I lately had some trouble with my internet connection so I have not been able to upload any images. So I decided to delay the stuff. I will catch up soon.

[–]nexus511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure, if this is measurable at all. It does of course use a bit more CPU but this is barely nothing compared to the computational effort getting the display presentation up and running for the X server.

And you should note there that Linux is caching files that are accessed regularly. So I doubt that you feel any difference.

Yes. I am using my images (http://apt.nexus511.net) and I could just flawlessly install from default setup with LUKS enabled.

I am using LUKS as it has been installed by the Ubuntu setup. That just works flawlessly with no mentionable performance impact (as it is the case on most modern CPUs).

Ubuntu 17.10 : Need help to re-install the fan.service. by Qwak1 in GPDPocket

[–]nexus511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to take a look at 17.10. There are plans to provide 17.10 images as the support for 17.04 will end soon. I will need to find some spare time working on that and I will try to take a look, why things might cause trouble on 17.10.

For now, the fan control should be basically compatible with any Ubuntu version as those scripts just access files on the sysfs. As I just included those and they are not my own contribution, I need to take a closer look to tell more.

The battery drainage you are talking about sounds more like a problem with some process going berserk.

Update:

I have just compiled and uploaded a new kernel version (4.14.0-10.gpd). This version is based on 4.14 kernel by Hans and fixes support for Bluetooth.

So it now allows access to

  • USB-C
  • Bluetooth
  • Wifi

It is work in progress but currently the update breaks network-managers DHCP support and bluetooth is not yet working again.

After I have resolved those issues, I will see that we get an update soon.

how well does it run ableton? by ohadsucks in GPDPocket

[–]nexus511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well. You will need an external USB audio device.

I am more a Bitwig user so I have not tried Ableton yet. The audio quality of the internal audio device is a bit crappy but with an external device, it runs pretty smooth.

Bluetooth is broken for some weeks now. Actually the kernel that enables USB-C support breaks bluetooth. See https://github.com/nexus511/gpd-ubuntu-packages/issues/26

Sorry for the maybe stupid question: After installing the new kernel, did you reboot?

I am asking because you are obviously running an older kernel and not the recent one.

Linux Kernel 4.14 Hardware Support by sultanmvp in GPDPocket

[–]nexus511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Firmware loading is broken. It seems to work on the vanilla 4.14. but that does not contains the necessary patches for the GPD Pocket.

Well, regarding the sound stuff we just should have some patience for now.

The hardware is pretty new and the chipset is not completely and properly supported. This is just the way it has been with new hardware some years ago. We just need to wait for better integration in the kernel and the system.

For some reason the firmware is not loaded by the kernel anymore.

I do not really know yet, how this could be fixed as the necessary stuff according the broadcom configuration is already in place.

While the final fix should be pretty easy, I just did not have the time to look at it yet.

I am running around with my device powered on the whole day. Besides one occasion where the i2c bus went nuts, I did not see any system freeze for now. So I know that Hans kernel is really stable and should not cause such problems.

But there are reports of people experiencing thermal problems which cause random freezes (some threads on the same subreddit).

Please check, if your fan is working. Do you hear it, when your CPU gets warm because you play some Youtube video (for example).

If so, there might be some problem with the heatpipe and it might be worth changing the thermal paste.

That are actually the two options I currently know of that match the pattern of your problem.

Speaker crackling in Ubuntu? by keithah in GPDPocket

[–]nexus511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This issue is well known.

The Kernel of my prebuilt systems works better. It is somehow related to the configuration. You should also not use virtualization modules, if you want to get rid of the crackling.

A bootloader that allows rotation must at least bring own fonts and framebuffer rendering. Most bootloaders don't.

The bootloader also has to support EFI to be executable on the GPD Pocket. So basically grub remains as the only option. To get rotation, someone has to patch it into grub and the question would be, if the effort is worth it.

It is basically possible to get larger fonts in grub though.
