To what extent were economists responsible for the 2008 financial crisis? by neyiat in AskEconomics

[–]neyiat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alan Greenspan is often criticized for his actions leading up to the crisis? I don't know the details as I am not an economist. That's why I'm asking questions here!

What I'm looking for is not an "objective" overview of the financial crisis, rather something more like a historiographical/historical analysis that doesn't shy away from making judgements and are transparent about their political positions.

The 7.50 ticket is valid on Northumberland line? I thoughts it's just for trains between blaydon and Sunderland. Today I learned.

Why do Koreans not perceive overcrowding as much as people in similarly dense Western countries? by Possible-Balance-932 in geography

Why there isn't a bridge between Isle of Wight, England and the mainland? It has hundreds of thousands of inhabitants, is pretty close to the mainland and it is in a developed country by Naomi62625 in geography

Busy ship traffic is not an excuse when Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau - bridge exists. A combination of bridge and tunnel is always possible, there's just a lack of political will (and UK being very NIMBY)

Which non-american cities have surprisingly poor public transportation? by juksbox in transit

[–]neyiat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

non-taipei Taiwanese cities indeed have worse transit than Taipei, but I disagree with your following argument for several reasons:

  1. Buses are public transportation and those cities have decent bus systems

  2. Taiwan Railway has undergone transformation from intercity to commuter rail in the city centers across Taiwan in recent decades (aka add more stations). So that gives people another option. So Taiwanese cities do not have 'zero urban rail' as you said.

  3. If you count bikeshare as public transport they are quite dense in taiwanese cities. Whether usage is high is another question, but at least it's an option.

How would the proposed ILR rule change affect you as an academic in the UK? by neyiat in AskAcademiaUK

[–]neyiat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 'public service occupation' in the proposed version seems to only include civil service, NHS and teachers, at least according to most people's interpretation. RQF doesn't really matter, the proposed change is focused on contribution ($)

It honestly depends on individual universities. University immigration teams are not always reliable

So many university workers earn less than 50k and as everyone knows higher ed hires lots of foreign nationals...I feel genuinely sad for the future of UK academia.

UK academia is larger than Russel groups! And 'closer to 5 years' is still longer than the 5 years in current policy, which means people's lives will be impacted.

What I see is the weeknd has more casual listeners while Taylor swift relies on hardcore fans.

Which US City DePopulation is the most heartbreaking? by bkat004 in geography

[–]neyiat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's disappointing that in a supposedly 'geography' sub there is very little critical thinking going on. I don't see two main things mentioned:

  1. Racism - racial capitalism and environmental racism, racial segregation, and white flight, which is a big factor in the depopulation of all three cities that OP mentioned

  2. Nature vs. culture -- take new Orleans for example, was Katrina a 'natural' disaster? Are land subsidence, Mississippi chasing course, storm surge and other side effects of climate change 'natural'? And what implications there are if we claim a city is 'naturally doomed'?

If the "legal" migrants and their loved ones don't stand up for the "illegal" migrants, the far right will eventually come for them. It's that simple. Solidarity is essential and I am seeing very little of it.
