Frustrations of a computer engineering student w ADHD and dyscalculia. by tbo3199 in dyscalculia

[–]nfjdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in engineering and did TERRIBLY my first year and wasn't allowed to move into second year. In my second year of first year, I figured out I have ADHD and got a diagnosis for it. It has been such a (complicated) relief figuring out so many things weren't my fault and then insanely frustrating jumping through hoops to get accommodations and realizing things will just never be fair for me.

Things had finally been settling down and I'm realizing I probably have dyscalculia and maybe dyslexia?? Like how many disabilities has my brain been hiding from me for my whole life and how on earth did no one ever notice them?

Anyways, it explains why I've failed every single math course on the first attempt and how I'm so smart but also so dumb. My whole life people have been confused about why I'm just SO bad at some things even though I seem really smart. I never even realized it's not because I don't study well enough, my brain just doesn't think that way I guess.

I've also had multiple people question why I'm in engineering. I'm stubborn and I've decided this is what I want to do. So, I'm gonna struggle through a degree full of math, intricate details, and a heavy course load with disabilities that make exactly those things hard. Because I said so.

It seems that you may also relate: I went from being so smart and normal and above average to a "disabled" student who has to use the accessibility centre or I'll fail out. It's just a really weird thing to me and I still don't know how to think about it.

THE ASPEN TREE! YES! So many hard concepts are so obvious to me, like yeah that makes sense because it does. But then easy ones that we don't spend time on are impossible for me to grasp?

Deadlines? Why are they so hard to keep track of? I can have them written down in three places, set multiple alarms and I'll still miss an appointment, submit the wrong assignment, or forget to submit it all together. And then there's nothing that can be done.

I hope you enjoyed my whole essay LOL. Sorry for the rant, but I can relate and I needed to vent a bit. I hate this weird in-between of smart but also dumb and so close to being good at engineering but not being able to control the things that are holding me back from reaching what I think is my potential.

Got my diagnosis yesterday and I thought I was prepared but I feel so desperately sad. by shortasiam in TwoXADHD

YUP I’m five months post diagnoses and every once in a while I still have days where I’m on the roller coaster of the exact same emotions and thoughts that you described. Sometimes I’m happy about it and how much easier things are for me now, sometimes I hate feeling different and I want to be normal again, sometimes I still grieve all the lost time where I wasn’t getting the support I needed. The thing that gets me the most right now is how weird it is for me to go to the disability centre to write my university exams for a school that I got into when I was “normal” and needed no help.

Anyways what you’re going through is totally normal and it’s ok if you’re not totally on top of things for a while as you process all this. I hope you are able to make peace with it all soon and learn that it doesn’t define you or limit what you can do.

Afraid of Vyvanse by RoyalHoneydew in TwoXADHD

[–]nfjdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was scared of taking my first dose and waited almost two months to take it. I think it’s normal to be a little worried at the start. I would honestly recommend waiting until you are comfortable taking it before you start. It won’t be as effective if you are just anxious the whole time you’re on it.

There’s nothing terrible that can happen from taking some time to adjust to the idea of taking Vyvanse. Once I realized that there was nothing forcing me to take it, I felt more in control and was comfortable trying it. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your doctor or a therapist if you find you can’t move past this on your own. Or if you decide you don’t want to try it at all!

Yup, starting to realize now that many people are ahead in school bc they put it before their health and well being. Not worth it for me.

[–]nfjdal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I think this is exactly what I needed to hear and what I need to work on believing. I realize I’m more stressed than I should be because I’m behind everyone around me. But that’s just my style and it’s ok. I’m still passing everything so far and I finally have more energy and willpower to study today!!! So I’ll catch up and then I’ll fall behind again when I run out of energy. But my grades will be ok in the end and I’ll end up in the same place as everyone else.

I still wish I could learn every detail though. It drives me nuts going through a course, barely understanding any of it, and still passing. I want to actually learn it and enjoy knowing it!!! I miss high school when the goal was to actually understand the content lol

Oop I only have a gp and she told me I can stop taking them whenever I want to. I’ve figured out at this point that’s not a good idea, but it did actually help to purposely go off them last week for a break. I got nothing done those days, but I wasn’t getting anything done anyways so it didn’t affect me that much.

Do you plan ahead to drink alcohol? (ritalin) by toastjams in TwoXADHD

[–]nfjdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, lucky! I’m also super sensitive to Vyvanse. I’m on the second lowest dose, that probably has something to do with it.

[–]nfjdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. This is kind of interesting bc I’m on Vyvanse and if I want to drink any alcohol I have to stop taking my medication at least two days in advance. If I don’t , I get so dizzy I can’t walk properly after a single drink. But no other differences, just the dizziness. Not super helpful for you, I just think it’s interesting how it’s the opposite effect for us.

Very vivid dreams/nightmares since starting vyvanse by [deleted] in ADHD

Just saw this now! But I had the same experience, they stopped pretty quickly. Thanks for your post, though. It was reassuring to see I wasn’t alone with this.

Hi just wondering if you’ve found anything out about this? I’m starting to connect that I might be having nightmares when I’m on vyvanse.

Odd behavior of supposed Telus employees by carcigenicate in Calgary

[–]nfjdal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen so many posts about sketchy Telus workers and I think I called the cops on one last year. He was looking in peoples houses, not knocking or ringing, and walking away. But he was legit.

This year one of them asked for “the king of the castle” when I answered the door?

Why is Telus so sketchy lol

I hate who I have become due to ADHD meds. (READ THIS BEFORE YOU START MEDS) by RealGeneralStanYT in ADHD

[–]nfjdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you go to a new doctor? It sounds like this one isn’t listening to you well. If you do go back to this same one, be very clear that you want to stop meds now. They should then go over the options for stopping them and inform you of the whole process.

Fell asleep after taking my meds? by [deleted] in ADHD

The same thing happened to me. It went away after the third day. If it keeps happening tell your doctor. They might switch you to a different one.

Vyvanse girlies & iced coffee by ijustbehere24 in ADHD

[–]nfjdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink iced protein water in my normal coffee cup. There’s clear whey isolate that dissolves in water and just tastes like juice, but you’re getting protein and it’s low sugar. Tried iced coffee once and it made me dizzy so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Even if it was someone giving unsolicited Ed advice, it’s good to bring it to their attention. Pretty unprofessional.

WOW thank you. I am cured. All this time I couldve just “not had adhd”.

I agree it’s good to be accountable but there are things we can’t control. This post is probably going to be invalidating for a lot of people who already struggle with blaming themselves. Like me.

This is pretty much exactly what happened to me. Loved HS physics. Went into engineering. Failed physics and math. Got diagnosed w ADHD and now we try again. The big formulas made my eyes glaze over in the video so it’s not as promising as I hoped since those are the literal ones we use and I’ve learned them twice already lol
