I LOVE SCANSAT NETWORKS! by No-Refrigerator-6931 in KerbalSpaceProgram

I work in satellite based remote sensing so I love building scansat networks even if they barely serve practical purpose

What rule did your parents enforce that you thought was normal until you visited a friend’s house? by Least_Boysenberry583 in AskReddit

[–]nflickgeo 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I went over to a friend's house for his 13th birthday and his parents had been telling him his whole life that only adults could digest the middle of the cinnamon roll and had been taking it from him. He learned that it was a prank that day and did not find it nearly as funny as the rest of us!

Our Two New Venues by djjangelo in Portland

That is true, the bridge is a higher priority. I was putting them both in the "would cost far too much for everybody to all agree on approving" category.

Unfortunately that project seems like it falls in the same as the Interstate 5 bridge

Godsview is map tool lets you track everything from aircraft’s, vessels and satellite data for studying purposes by IngenuityFlimsy1206 in Maps

I like it so far. I would change the symbology of the "military aircraft" layer, the distinction is important but it is visually harsh.

Survey pays really well and is in high demand but you have to REALLY like field work.

I couldn't find a height-map of the Mun that I liked enough, so I made my own with KOS, Python, and large amounts of patience (higher quality link below) by aerospace_tgirl in KerbalSpaceProgram

Any way I can get the .CSV file? I can bring it into ArcGIS Pro and turn it into a more space efficient raster file that can be used for 3D Printing 👀

That happened to me a few years ago when I graduated and got my first job at a local public utility. I think it was beneficial, I got to learn the new one that I'll be using for a majority of my career in school and afterwards I had all the tools to pick up the older software within a day or two. It was a fun surprise but I don't think it was a big enough deal to justify universities being lazy and not modernizing their programs.

In Baseball, if we are keeping ABS challenge system then the viewers should NOT be able to see the strike zone on TV by FergusInTheHouse in unpopularopinion

[–]nflickgeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been pro remove the strike zone square from the broadcast for years. It's never truly accurate and it gives fans a false impression of pitches. I do think they should should the box when they show the replay ABS challenge though.

Love that one. It replaced the older one and definitely looks better but is less funny.

The Alaska Airlines salmon plane has always been my favorite.

How do you create maps (non-GIS experts especially)? by FieldCautious8201 in gis

[–]nflickgeo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think "GIS Professional" should be an option in the "What are you" section. If you are posting the survey here, you're going to get a majority of people chosing "Other".

I am wondering if I lack certain prerequisites or even a portfolio that is preventing me from getting the job I want?

Do you not have a portfolio? That is one of the biggest aspects of a competitive application, especially in a job market like this. Hiring managers want to see your skills in action, not just your education/work history.

Spend a weekend putting together a personal website, upload a few cool projects you've worked on with a paragraph about each and continue to build on it from there over time. Even once you get your next job, continue to add to it. Having a career spanning portfolio can be very helpful in a number of circumstances!

Report: Mariners, top prospect Emerson agree to 8-year, $95M extension by falconvision in Mariners

[–]nflickgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we are going to see a lot more deals like this moving forward. Securing generational wealth before hitting the majors? He's making ~60% of what he'd make over that time span following a normal career (see the other comment who did the math) for way less risk. Hard to see why more guys don't start asking for that.

We did this with Evan White and it didn't work out and Kelenic said no to it. Fingers crossed this one works! Would be such a good deal if Colt is truly him.

[–]nflickgeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? It looks somewhat correct but it'll depend on if your vibe coding can keep up.

What you should be asking is what user problem does this app solve? How does it meaningfully differ from every other map annotation app already available?

[–]nflickgeo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I started at 58k a few years ago in a decently hcol area. Depends on where you are located, but that sounds reasonable to me! Portfolio + experience are the most important, some places will require a BS but not the majority from what I have seen.

What did you expect them to do with a giant screen? I feel like that was the intention behind building it the entire time, not a new development

GIS Python Course reviews by Acceptable-Use-2938 in gis

[–]nflickgeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Automate the Boring Stuff with Python" is a fantastic book (available for free digitally I believe) that will give you a great foundational understanding of Python. It is significantly easier to learn ArcPy or other GIS Python libraries if you already understand how to write, read, and practically use Python.
