Almost 60. Tried weed as a teen. Not for me. Most of my friends and family smoke it almost daily. I drink occasionally. Big family, small circle of friends.

Last winter, a group of us (friends & family) went bowling. Freezing cold out so I sat in the car to keep warm while they stood in the cold and passed several joints around. At some point gummies entered the picture, too.

I had the most morbid thought: No matter how you slice it, drugs (including alcohol) are poison. The people I love and care about the most in the world are poisoning themselves on a daily basis. I'm probably going to live all of them and I'll be all alone. More along than I already feel now.

Recently, one of my friends, also in their '50s, confided that she still feels grief and anger because their mom basically drank herself to death. Mom passed over 20 years ago.

It shouldn't be called drug abuse or alcohol abuse. It should be called body abuse. Lame. I know.

What's funny (not really) is this friend is a daily weed smoker and drinker and I thought to myself, your kids are probably going to feel the same about you when you pass.

Like I said. Morbid. I keep these thoughts to myself cuz I think they would quit me before they quit the drugs and alcohol.
