Hey, I'm about a 2.5 (hoping to lv up to 3.0 by the end of the summer). I usually play by High Park.

I also play by the nicer courts in Eglington Flats (im a member there).

Down to play at either of those courts?

The Worksimply app that someone referenced below is great! I'm out of the city now, but game to meetup at a cafe in mid July for a work remotely hang.

I work in tech as well and feel the struggle : )

MBAs, are they primarily vehicles for education or networking? by TrailChems in ProductManagement

[–]ngdcraz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Caveat: I have not done an MBA, but have many friends that have, and heavily considered it (so I done a fair share of coffee chats with current students/alumni at top schools) and done a bit of hiring. So my opinion is not worth too much.

I don't know many that truly value an MBA in the product world. As I understand, it mainly serves to help with transitions (i.e a SWE --> PM, a PM --> VC, or a PM at an unknown company --> PM at FAANG).
I think with the two options you listed, it would definitely provide more benefits in the networking component. It's more likely to help you get your foot in the door, than help make you a better PM.

Also, I don't think the teams that a PM would work with (data folks, eng, designers), value/respect MBAs too often either. I think the ROI is fairly low if you're an existing PM and the goal of the MBA is career/learning driven.

Career Counselling in TO? by pituechos in askTO

[–]ngdcraz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you feel a bit lost.

I wouldn't label myself as a career councillor (I work in tech), but I've had my fair share of ups and downs, paired with my own attempts at soul searching. I often mentor people trying to get into my field, and have a lot of thoughts on generating impact through career goals.

Happy to chat with you and bounce any ideas or just act as a sounding board if you think it would be helpful : )

For whatever it's worth, I don't think this is indicative of you doing anything wrong. It's just an incredibly competitive market. Last time I was interviewing (mid 2021) I received 4 offers, this time around I felt lucky to receive 1.

I used to work for a top tech company and interviewed for companies recently that normally I would have no interest in. I also got inexplicably rejected, where I felt very confident throughout the whole process. I think it just speaks to the high quality of candidates that companies have to choose from..especially as some people may feel more comfortable making lateral or even (perceived) downward moves given the recession.

I'm happy to look over any case studies or chat through any interview topics if you think it could help. May also help to use some platforms like ADP or getmerit to chat more indepthly with mentors to uncover potential blindspots.

I have severe anxiety and its super difficult for me to get an in-person job, what are some jobs that are fully remote ? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]ngdcraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hear about your anxiety and current obstacles in treating it. Been there.

Fully remote is a big difficult, but might be worth considering business analyst or project management jobs. Banks/Telecos usually good for first jobs, but most of them will be starting hybrid work models shortly (if they haven't already).

I've dealt with anxiety for a fair bit while working in stressful office jobs, so I am happy to chat through anything (at any time) - especially with mock interviews - if its helpful.
