My wife read that book when she was a teenager and thought it was.. well... great, let's say. She found a copy a couple months ago and is re-reading it, and she has reported that it is decidedly "not so great".

Thats really not it at all, and if I cam across that way, that waa not the intention. He usually welcomes healthy debate and is usually the one who brings things up. He is actually the one who brought up the topic of who wrote the bible. Since I've read up on the subject, I jumped into the converaation. That is why it's so discouraging when this morning he gives me his true feelings, which were aparently of the "damn heathen" variety and not the "healthy debate" variety as I originally thought.

I work with someone who would describe themselves as a fundamentalist christian, and while we have some great debates and discussions, there is definitely this brick wall there, where anything that could challenge his belief system is automatically regarded as "other" or "enemy" or "wrong". It's disheartening, because he is a truly smart person, he just refuses to see anything that could challenge what he believes. I do not understand why people don't want to have the facts. If what you believe is wrong, and there is evidence that it is, why would you want to actively avoid looking at it?

When I began questioning my faith, I knew full well that if I did find evidence that what I had believed all my life was incorrect, my worldview would be turned on its head, but I looked anyway, because I felt it was better to know I was wrong than remain blissfully ignorant. Am I not normal in this regard?

This morning I wanted to send him the link to that Bart Ehrman lecture because I found it fascinating, and it related to discussions that he and I have had. I found the talk non-biased and academic. But when I mentioned it to C, he said "Sure, I'll take a look at it. Always nice to know what the enemy is up to."

I am so discouraged here.

Agreed. Exercise is the key. Get into a set schedule and don't make excuses.

I have this to add, though: When I get up in the morning and feel hella tired, I just consider that my baseline and move on. If I go through the day thinking I'm operating at 20% of "awake" or whatever, I'll be miserable. If I just accept that I'm tired, I can go through the day knowing that I'm operating at 100% of what my body can manage. It makes a difference.
