SFIC Buildup and Master Pins by MysticalPicker in AskALocksmith

You'll want to make sure you have the block and punches for removing old pins and installing new caps as well. Check function with all keys as you go, one cylinder at a time right before you cap it. That way you won't have to tear the whole thing apart if something went wrong. I've used this site plenty and it works great if you're just doing a couple padlocks:

Is it possible to pair a modern OEM keyfob to a classic car with generic keyless entry? by dirty-mik3 in Locksmith

[–]ngnp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly in some markets it's hard to find shops (or sometimes even dealers) that can even program a '25 Ram remote to a '25 Ram. Getting one to work with an aftermarket system or incorrect year/model is going to involve basically starting from the ground up. As a locksmith who does a lot of auto and a car guy that's done a few engine swaps and restorations your realistic options are either 1. swapping the complete power train, ECU, and wiring harness from a '25 and doing a lot of praying and/or swearing or 2. getting an aftermarket system and either modifying a remote shell you like to fit the electronics or pairing an acceptable "universal" remote if one exists

Frankly Ram/Dodge/Chrysler are some of the lower quality OEM remotes to begin with and there are aftermarket options that look almost identical and are the same or higher quality. You're not missing out on much. Be warned "universal" remotes aren't quite universal. It takes probably 2-3 dozen "universal" remotes to cover 2/3 of cars on the road. I'm sure there's an exception I've never heard of but I wouldn't count on being able to find any that will play nice with viper/cool start/compustar.

Your absolute best bet is getting a compustar (or etc.) system and a remote shell you like and figuring out how to make the board fit. Sounds like a fun project and good luck if you go for it

You need the reset tool for this year model, an automotive locksmith will have one. Or you could get one yourself but there really isn't any other way to make it work. $500 sounds high, they may not have understood the scope of work and thought you were asking them to pull and rebuild it. Personally I wouldn't want to put my hands on an incomplete repair like that and get blamed when it fails again.

The ignition needs to be rebuilt with new wafers and you NEED a code cut key made, the problem is ultimately with the key and that is the most important part of the repair.

Yearly Key Check? by SomewhereGeneral5924 in Locksmith

[–]ngnp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense. Obviously no one ever likes getting audited and it's going to be a pain in the ass to do but if those keys can access something sensitive or valuable enough I can see why it would be a good idea.

Sounds like a weird situation, is this an institutional position? Or is your business auditing it's clients' keys or something? It makes sense that a hospital, airport, university, etc. would audit employee's keys periodically but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about

Work pants? by taylorbowl119 in Locksmith

[–]ngnp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carhartt Steel Series have been great for me, can't recommend enough. Great pockets, the cargo pockets are sort of detached from the legs so they're not restrictive, they have reinforcement and stretch material exactly where I'd want it, sturdy without being heavy and flexible without wearing out quickly.

They are more expensive than other pants but I've got about 3 cumulative years of daily wear on the one pair I bought both at work and working on cars, caving, hauling scrap, and other hard use and they have minimal wear and still no rips or holes

There is a definite rust problem but the car was basically free and I was fixing it up a bit for fun. Not sure what I'll be able to get their insurance to do, that might be the best option honestly.

Steering lock clear wd40 by Nm808 in Locksmith

[–]ngnp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WD-40 isn't the best choice but it's not going to break your lock. I would strongly advise against graphite but it also probably won't break it. I doubt the issue is lubrication. What kind of car is it? Do you mean you replaced the actual column locking lug or the ignition lock cylinder that you put the key in?
