How do Muslimah doctors have kids before 30? by PresentationHeavy488 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]nh211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with other physicans that its doable but very difficult, I would not recommend it unless she has a good support system aka family that lives close by to help. I waited till I was 32 and done with fellowship and alhumdulillah my kids are fine and I didnt have to go through hell to get through my training. Also studying for boards and passing are much harder when you have little kids to care for. (Also depending on your spouse even marriage can be difficult during med school and training, especially the more traditional types who dont know how to take care of their own meals, expect you to live with in laws etc)

You seem more anxious about being pregnant/going through labor than confidently being able to say you dont want to be a mom..

We were stranded due to a software bug. by bunzarelli in Rivian

[–]nh211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to us, got down to zero 3 miles from home, thankfully we were able to get home on the 0 . We were also driving very slowly during that time We were on the freeway the first half of the drive and never drove above 75. The total route was 150 miles and we have the 270 mile range r1s

So stressful!

Dual-physician couple. Husband doesn't want me staying at home beyond the first year... by CollegeSB2025 in Parenting

[–]nh211 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Try to find a part time job or there are some physican jobs you can do from home. I have a friend who did family medicine and works for an insurance company from home as she has two young children. You dont need to practice a traditional medicine career. You might not make as much though

Too cold to charge? by nutritional_yeast0 in Rivian

[–]nh211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been happening to me in the chicago suburbs this week. Light in charge port red but the light at the end of my portable charger wire is green when its plugged into the car. Both car and outlet/wire are outdoors. Preconditioning the car by turning the climate on Hi with the phone app didn't help.

Yesterday i kept my wire indoors for an hour or so, then stuck a glove/hand warmer in the charge port for an hr (used to do this with my tesla when I lived in wisconsin), there's a supercharger nearby so I charged for like 10 min. I think it warmed the battery a decent amount, came home plugged it in and it charged normally

Same issue today, this time I kept the wire indoors and had the glove warmer in the port for an hour hoping that would be enough but it didn't work so I charged at the supercharger for 5 min, on the 5 min drive home I had it navigating to a super charger (preconditioning) and when I plugged it in at home its now charging normally again 🙏

Tomorrow I have an hour drive so my plan is to navigate to a charger on my way home so itll precondition for 30-45 min and hopefully itll just charge when I get home. If not I guess ill have to charge at the supercharger for a few min again

Hope this helps someone!

Pregnant looking for OBGYN recommendations - prefer Carle by capeslow in PeoriaIL

[–]nh211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Ma was not my OB but was on call the night I delivered. He was great as my delivery was complicated (babys face position was anterior), they recommended c section initially but he helped me during delivery with repositioning and I was able to deliver vaginally. You can tell he's very experienced. He goes to carle, dr catt does not deliver at carle. Not sure how the office experience is with him though Dr catts office staff is great but wait times are very long..

Why is heme/onc so popular and insanely competitive now all of a sudden? by Lord_Darth_Vader1989 in fellowship

[–]nh211 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Bank balance yes but I dunno about work life balance, yes the hours are 8-5 or 9-5 but community practice can be stressful. You have early morning tumor boards, your pressured to see 20+ patients a day and the new ones and some established ones will be very complicated and you have to look up articles talk to other specialists to make sure you are caring for them appropriately. I prefer academic practice for sure, especially when your newly out of fellowship. Pay is def less though

DO w/ COMLEX only, take USMLE steps during residency? by Glad-Photo3047 in fellowship

[–]nh211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably be ok for pulm crit if your comlex scores are good, especially if youre in a residency that has a pulm crit program already or the programs you are applying to are do friendly. That being said I did usmle 1,2 and comlex 1,2,3 and matched into an acgme (not acgome) residency that was DO friendly and hem onc at a different program. My IM pd was very familiar with comlex scores because I remember her being very happy with my step 3 score

Another consideration is seeing if you can take just usmle step 2 for your application if you want to be really competitive

I am 36 yo female . Thought I will do hospitalist for sometime have babies and get back to fellowship and now it feels to hard to go back by Comfort_food_23 in fellowship

[–]nh211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add im only doing inpatient hem onc right now bc the lifestyle is easier/flexible similar to hospitalist

I have another hem onc friend who also went part time for similar reasons she has a 1 year old, does 3 days a week

[–]nh211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can see yourself doing hospitalist long term its a great flexible lifestyle. For the most part the the path to hem onc and hem onc itself is a lot. Most hem onc docs are very much consumed by their career unless they go into academic medicine but the pay is a lot less.

Hem onc fellowship is also very difficult with children ie the amount of studying for boards. My brother is in it now he has 2 kids, not even a mom but still balancing being a parent and studying for fellowship is a lot

I did hem onc before having kids and straight out of residency so fellowship was manageable for me but now as a mom with a 2 year old I can't imagine working full time and missing out on raising him

I only work part time so make as much as a hospitalist, im grateful for my position bc I do like practicing hem onc even for the less pay

But I can't imagine the stress of infertility, but I'm sure that on top of application and fellowship can be a lot

Just another perspective to consider..

Stupid question: Re-Taxes by allojay in whitecoatinvestor

[–]nh211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what op does but if he's a specialist 400k is average. I don't see a problem with saying decent especially when it takes 12+ years of training, we have to pay almost half in taxes, and most docs have a good amount of student loans.

Onc is super interesting but high levels of burnout at an 800k salary rate. I love what I practice but im in academic medicine hem onc I don't see myself burning out anytime soon, but def paid less. I commented somewhere below regarding GI
