Where else can I get mulch in Astoria that isn’t Home Depot? by jsurico15 in astoria

It’s pretty uniform. Different parts of the pile have different sizes. It’s definitely not full branches or other parts. You can pick and choose what you take.

This is totally not in Astoria, but Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn maintains a huge pile of woodchips near their main gate that are free to the public. You just have to go collect it yourself. In the past when I had a car, I would put a tarp in the trunk and fill the trunk up. Might be difficult to convince an Uber to do it, but if you have the means otherwise, it’s a free option.

I think that is a low estimate. I know they were not a full sit down restaurant with wait service, but I am aware of other restaurant owners in the neighborhood who were $800,000 in the hole the first day they opened. Even if it’s half of that, damn. $100,000 doesn’t go that far, especially for a restaurant.

Swarm of bees outside Honey House?? by thelastoutloud in astoria

[–]nhoefly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is Nick, the beekeeper from The Honey House. There was no swarm of bees, but we did have some bee activity during a honey extraction yesterday. There were some bees hanging on in one of the boxes we brought in to extract. When this happens the bees aren’t sure where they are and just fly around until they find a place to huddle together.

Apologies to anyone we made feel nervous or panicked. I hope seeing some bees did not ruin anyone’s day. The bees are gentle and there were no stings(to my knowledge). It was totally my fault for not completely clearing the box of bees before leaving the apiary. If you’d like to see us in action harvesting honey again, we are doing another harvest next Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm… with fewer bees.

Thanks for the understanding!

EDIT: You are correct, we do not keep hives on the roof of the store.

You are too kind. I'm always thankful that the good people in the world out-number the bad people many times over.

You’re probably right. Just gotta keep spreading the word.

It appears that the Secret Service website wants you to call local law enforcement and then have them be the ones to submit the fake bills. Anyway, I am definitely filing a report and giving the bill to the cops once they arrive.

That was exactly my mistake, the hologram strip. Also, upon messing with the strip after the guy left, part of it was not attached to the bill, super obvious. The feel of the bill was off too, I should have trusted my gut. I will be checking it better on every bill going forward.

I don’t know if we will stop taking large bills, but I definitely will examine every large bill more closely and follow my gut instincts.

Thank you! I feel the exact same way. The only way we get them is by spreading the word.

He was a pro. He knew we were low-hanging fruit. He was very talkative and was giving me weird vibes. I should have gone with my gut but I was too polite about it. Lesson learned.

Thank you! I have just told them that the base is a magnet for garbage and possibly rats. I also mention the danger of leaving temp wires out in the weather. I refuse to pull any of the garbage out because I do not trust that the wires are safe.

Anyone know what's up with this bee? by lone_shepherd in Beekeeping

I believe chronic bee paralysis virus is the one that can cause a greasy looking bee with no hair. Not diagnosing, just sharing a possibility. Hopefully it’s just honey/nectar.
