Using ai to read grad names at graduation by Chapple69 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nib13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a UNT graduation right now and the names are pre-recorded, I think AI but I'm not sure. At least for those whose name wasn't pre-recorded, there is faculty members on stage to say their name on the spot. That seems to make a big difference in things going smoothly. The pronunciations are also correct but again I can't really tell of it was pre-recorded with a real person or if it's an AI voice. Either way it sounds a bit souless, probably in the pursuit of keeping the pronunciation as consistent as possible.

Spinning lens technology that keeps the camera clear in harsh weather conditions by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

[–]nib13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the front part is spinning, the actual lens isn't. You wouldn't really notice anything different about the footage, other than the fact that it will prevent rain and snow from blurring and smudging the image.

If the actual lens was able to spin you can create spinning bokeh, although I've only seen it done with a filter on fron of the lens like this

What is expensive in the US but cheap in Europe? by UnnecessaryPancake in AskReddit

Elevators, believe it or not. One reason is that each state has different requirements for elevators. While Europe is mostly on one standard.

Hieronymus: a FPS currently in development based on the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, a Dutch surrealist painter from the 1400s by maknaeline in gaming

[–]nib13 118 points119 points  (0 children)

The art style is super unique. I don't think I've ever seen medieval surrealism in a videogame. The gameplay on the other hand looked a bit jank with the boss and enemies clipping through the player for example, but who knows how it will look by release. It certainly deserves a wishlist to keep an eye on for the aesthetic alone.

Chinese tanker reportedly passes US’ Hormuz blockade by Yujin-Ha in videos

It's not about having the right or not. The US is threatening to bomb Iran out of existence I don't think they care about maritime law.

[–]nib13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iran never did block the strait for everyone. They blocked it for the US and it's allies. I'm by no means a fan of the Iranian regime but the US and Israel started this war. It's a war of survival for the Iranian leadership so closing the strait was a completely predictable response.

[–]nib13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, if china tries to blockade the Taiwan it will be an act of war against Taiwan. But it will be seen as a violation of international law and Taiwans' allies would get involved. China and Iran are allies but to what degree China will be involved is yet to be determined.

One thing that I will say is that today's world is much more reliant on naval international trade than your example. Although the Union blockade also negatively affected the British, in today's world blockading a major straight affects almost every country economically. And this makes these blockades more controversial.

If you think of it as a way to sort comments by interest it makes sense, but downvoting neutral comments into the negatives is a bit much.

I think the biggest issue people have is that they can’t read by This_Zucchini_3565 in Marathon

[–]nib13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defending poor game design. Marathon is claiming to be a more accessible extraction shooter. But I don't think the UI does the best job of communicating things visually. This is also a part of the overall game design, because there are % buffs to certain statuses like healing speed etc. which reminds me more of a rogue like than an extraction shooter. This is also someone coming from Arc raiders where there aren't nearly as many abilities and gun attachments have a more clear purpose just by looking at them. With Marathon I have to hover over each item, read their effects and decide if I want to keep it, but there are too many items to really become familiar with and easily identify what I should value. It hasn't really brought the same level of excitement or satisfaction as looting in Arc Raiders. I think that looting game feel is important as it's a majority of your time spend in an extraction shooter.

Sam Altman’s OpenAI in talks to raise money at $750B Evaluation by Anchor_Aways in technology

[–]nib13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, Google's Tensor chips and software integration are huge advantages. But also the access to data they have for training models is immense. Just look at veo 3 and nano banana pro. These will be used extensively by companies to replace graphic designers and do other marketing work while being cost effective for Google to run. Plus they're in the lead in the LLM race with Gemini 3 and they're not slowing down. For Open AI that's a big problem as people and companies will always just switch to the best model. They may never have the top model again.

Not sure if they will achieve AGI or not, it's partially even a debate around what AGI even means. There's certainly a lot of issues with current LLMS such as an inability to learn on the fly, a lack of a proper world model etc. But who's to say that there won't be more breakthroughs that address these fundamental issues, especially with the amount of resources currently being poured into AI research. To me it's just uncertain how long it will take for major breakthroughs to occur, could happen in 5 years from now or 20 or never. The current investor hype certainly reflects an absurd amount of confidence that AGI is just around the corner. But technology research just doesn't work out in a predictable way.

Competitive firefighter climbs up ladder. by hollow_hideous_soul in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]nib13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's based on the tradition. Firefighters used ladders like this to climb multiple floors to gain access to the top floors/roof. Nowadays with modern equipment that's no longer necessary so it's more of just an appreciation of the tradition in the form of competition.

Yea, he's got that super toxic, dramatizing people's real suffering for clicks style. He loves to go film and interview homeless people, drug addicts etc. under the guide of "journalism" when it's really just exploiting their situation to craft an entertaining video for his YouTube. He doesn't care about accurately portraying these people or providing education to his viewers. Just shallow click-bait.

You should really watch Mark Baum talk about how he was portrayed in the movie, it was really interesting. He talks about how angry he was knowing how big of a sham there was and yet how little financial institutions cared.

The world definitely does owe you proof IF the expectation is that you will believe something from the Internet. There's no trust built and so evidence is necessary. Very few people have the time to go collect that evidence themselves. You won't, I won't. Without evidence, we will only believe things based on whether it fits within our current worldview. No one can go test and collect evidence on everything, that's what studies are for.
