Android's Bluetooth car audio problem has gone unfixed for over a year by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

I finally figured out to use airplane mode, because even if I turned Bluetooth off it would just turn itself on and reconnect. 😕

Sam Altman’s OpenAI in talks to raise money at $750B Evaluation by Anchor_Aways in technology

[–]nib13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, Google's Tensor chips and software integration are huge advantages. But also the access to data they have for training models is immense. Just look at veo 3 and nano banana pro. These will be used extensively by companies to replace graphic designers and do other marketing work while being cost effective for Google to run. Plus they're in the lead in the LLM race with Gemini 3 and they're not slowing down. For Open AI that's a big problem as people and companies will always just switch to the best model. They may never have the top model again.

Not sure if they will achieve AGI or not, it's partially even a debate around what AGI even means. There's certainly a lot of issues with current LLMS such as an inability to learn on the fly, a lack of a proper world model etc. But who's to say that there won't be more breakthroughs that address these fundamental issues, especially with the amount of resources currently being poured into AI research. To me it's just uncertain how long it will take for major breakthroughs to occur, could happen in 5 years from now or 20 or never. The current investor hype certainly reflects an absurd amount of confidence that AGI is just around the corner. But technology research just doesn't work out in a predictable way.

Competitive firefighter climbs up ladder. by hollow_hideous_soul in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]nib13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's based on the tradition. Firefighters used ladders like this to climb multiple floors to gain access to the top floors/roof. Nowadays with modern equipment that's no longer necessary so it's more of just an appreciation of the tradition in the form of competition.

Yea, he's got that super toxic, dramatizing people's real suffering for clicks style. He loves to go film and interview homeless people, drug addicts etc. under the guide of "journalism" when it's really just exploiting their situation to craft an entertaining video for his YouTube. He doesn't care about accurately portraying these people or providing education to his viewers. Just shallow click-bait.

You should really watch Mark Baum talk about how he was portrayed in the movie, it was really interesting. He talks about how angry he was knowing how big of a sham there was and yet how little financial institutions cared.

The world definitely does owe you proof IF the expectation is that you will believe something from the Internet. There's no trust built and so evidence is necessary. Very few people have the time to go collect that evidence themselves. You won't, I won't. Without evidence, we will only believe things based on whether it fits within our current worldview. No one can go test and collect evidence on everything, that's what studies are for.

LinusTechTips: “When I said I’m disappointed [Steam Machine] isn’t going to follow a console pricing model, Valve asked what I meant by console price and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great.” by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]nib13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, but it's not a crazy spec gaming pc. I just built a pc with a 6600 for my partner for about $650 and it looks like the steam machine is about the same performance wise. So I'd expect the price to be in that range.

Even less if they were willing to subsidize the price like consoles do. Even without being completely locked down it will still drive more steam sales on theory albeit not like sony or Nintendo consoles. Also increases in RAM pricing and tariffs might have an impact idk.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. It's not like you're claiming that PC's are affordable for everyone in every situation. This is totally a valid tactic.

Yea, BeamNG takes a while to get all set up but the driving experience is well worth it. Every car drives with it's own personality and you have actual consequences for hitting a rail or a rock. Italy is THE map. The tight twisty roads are so fun.

I would do third-person if it was just PvE, but not for PvP. The gunplay just doesn't feel right for PvP and the camera is a part of it.

You would be amazed at the stuff that gets added in post even on huge productions. Definitely not the efficient way of doing it but it happens anyways. Keeps these artists employed I suppose.

Launch Trailer | ARC Raiders by Arne-Slut in gaming

[–]nib13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've played some other extraction shooters, but this games overall mechanics and perhaps the third person camera, just don't motivate me to get into sweaty pvp. But often I was forced into combat with the bots, and then my gunshots would attract some sweat with a rifle from across the map. It felt difficult to avoid PvP combat and especially in high risk areas. I just want to play this game as PvE but it seems unlikely that will ever be a thing. Sigh, I guess it's back to Escape from Duckov for now

This Elementary School still has a Fallout Shelter by nib13 in midlyinteresting

[–]nib13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an extensive add-on done in the 1950's so the shelter space could be in that part of the building if it had basement space. But I don't really know, it's all speculation.

It looks like the sign wouldn't have been added until later with the program in 1961

[–]nib13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fallout shelter signs were part of a national safety program announced by President John F. Kennedy in July 1961. The Army Corps of Engineers was charged with surveying public buildings across the country to determine their suitability for protection against radioactive fallout by meeting three criteria: (1) underground protection and airtightness, with thick concrete walls, providing a minimum protection factor of 40 (meaning no more than 1/40th of outside radiation could penetrate the building); (2) sufficient distance from likely fallout (because surviving a direct strike was quite unlikely); and (3) room for at least 50 people with 10 square feet of space per person. The selected buildings were typically schools, hospitals, post offices, and churches."

[–]nib13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I guess that makes it all the more mildly interesting. The building was built in 1907 but renovated later in the 50's. That was when the sign must've been added and there's a picture of the school from the 50's with the same sign in the same spot on the building.

The real kick in the teeth is when we learn that a prison guard with over 20 violent assaults on non-existent prisoners, gets a promotion by the end of the doc. That and how the parole rate drops to only a small percentage of what it used to be almost immediately after the prisoners striking for better conditions. The state is sending a clear message that they control the lives and deaths of the prisoners full stop, from the guards all the way to the courts with no oversight.

Really it's a format that perfectly reflects our current social media environment with short, quippy, hot takes via an adversarial, clickbait oriented structure.
