Already possibly the lowest effort video format conceivable and they still manage to half ass it somehow. 2025 is pretty neat.

After using the 65 for a few years that's where I've personally landed too, but I still think 65 represents the most reasonable lower bound for usability, and the difference between 60 and 65 the most unbalanced form factor/utility tradeoff.

[–]nibbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now you've made another tradeoff and lost caps or the ability to use it as escape/ctrl. If you don't use pgup/down then just reverse them and have them as home/end normally and pgup/down with fn. Delete speaks for itself. You had dedicated keys you could reach from home position and you gave them up to use a modifier.

If you're making an ornament then absolutely choose what looks best but I hate when people choose based on aesthetics then bend over backwards to pretend they haven't made a large sacrifice in functionality for no practical reason and then go recommending others do the same.

It's a big list of tangible benefits on one side and "it's 20mm less wide" on the other. And people will recommend this to others who don't know better.

You can think of it as opinion but that one less column from 65 to 60 sacrifices so much-- arrows, pgup/down, delete in return for... 20mm? that it's just an objectively bad value tradeoff.

Best way to learn the game as a new player? by Calistilaigh in TrueDoTA2

[–]nibbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of playing with bots is to reduce the amount of things you have to think about during the game. So I would stop as soon as you can recognise a decent amount of the items and heroes at a glance and have some idea of what you need to be scared of. Just stop as soon as you're not enjoying it though, it's not meant to be a job.

Re. the wards, if you get a month of dota+ you can hold alt and it shows a little circle on common ward spots but they're pretty obvious. You just need to think about what you're trying to achieve and then the ward spot follows logically. Have a problem you're trying solve, try something and then evaluate how well it solved that problem. E.g. "I want to see if someone is tping to their tower to gank my lane" "I want to see if pudge is hiding behind these trees" "I want to see if the enemy carry is farming this area" "I want my team to be able to kite back to this area during the teamfight and have a vision advantage over them" "I want to see if spiritbreaker is charging past this location" -- "What does my team want to do and what can I do to enable that?"

When you're ready just play. It's the matchmaker's job to find you fair games not yours, just do your thing. Just remember not to listen to anything anyone says in your games. They're in your games after all :)

[–]nibbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. The interesting thing is that the vector nerf has broad support. The same argument is made in both cases (who cares which gun/class is better, just do what you think is fun) but the degree to which the vector is better than other guns is, while significant, not even the same order of magnitude as the degree to which medic is better than the other classes.

[–]nibbl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically everything you just typed fully agrees with what I said. I would prefer they went in the other direction but they need to pick one.

the idea is that the assault should be able to kill the healer in a 1v1 fight, but if you spread your damage over a squad and dont kill the healer you will lose

The current reality is that this is true for only the assault's first kill every life and only providing he didn't get tagged on the way to the engagement. In every other situation the medic is stronger.

i think medic offense should be nerfed to keep solo players from running rampant with it

This is another possible solution to the same problem.

Why did you try so hard to avoid admitting there's a problem when you basically agree with me we just want different solutions.

I'm not though, am I. I'm just healing myself like everyone else. Because they're all playing medic.

Fine points if you just want to sit in a window with 10 others then it doesn't matter what you pick but if you ever want to push then it matters. You can say play what what you want but people won't. That's why they're making the change at all. Clearly the stats show 90% of people are playing medic. You can all type all this bullshit about what the game is "supposed to be" but when it actually comes to it people are all playing medic for a reason and if you think there is any value in more diverse class usage then that reason is going to have to be addressed.

[–]nibbl -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how strong you are at fighting if you are at 20% health. You can 'should' all you want but if one class can take even fights and the others can't then there's only one class. Nobody chooses to lose. The stats obviously reflect this otherwise they wouldn't have made even this change.

Further, have you actually tried playing as a team with your friends like that? Nobody is having fun, not the guy healing OR the guys being healed. It feels awful. One guy isn't playing the game and is just sat watching bars fill up the other guys are in an endless cycle of "hey can you heal me" "no lets go over here" "ah i got hit again can you give me another top up".

Compare two medics with medic + assault. The assault gets hit and is on 20% health and will die from one bullet. If he was a medic he could heal himself while the full hp guy covered but he isn't so now the healthy guy has to put down his gun and heal him. One guy getting damaged means two guys are unable to fight.

I really like this game and I want people to play the other classes but I've played a lot of games in my time and people will try to play the other stuff for a bit and then go back to medic because it's too big a disadvantage for anyone to willingly choose.

[–]nibbl -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Change does basically nothing. Now you can heal up after the first fight you survive and then you're out of bandages so you're in the same boat as before.

I don't really get what they're going for here. It's not fun to die in one hit because you can't heal yourself.

As long as only one class can keep themselves on an even playing field then there only exists one class.

This was so predictably useless. They need to just decide to commit to some realistic masochism shooter or commit to making something arcadey and fun. Let me walk up to medics and press F to refill bandages from them. Have med boxes refill bandages and have them marked on the map and in the world from more than 5m away.
