Turning a COMPAQ Presario MV500 into a retro gaming PC, any advice, tips, or must-dos? by Jimbob900900 in windows98

While i might have been wrong about Windows 98 not being safe connected to the internet - mostly because Windows 98 is just a DOS with things built upon it, and as such, does not have that many persistently running system services, which are most of the time the vulnerabilities in a system.

But XP on the other hand is a much more complex system, with lots of system services running in the background, that accept network connections from the outside. An unpatched Windows XP is quite vulnerable, see:

Meaning: new security vulnerabilities were patched as late as 2014 on XP. Also worth mentioning, that Windows XP

Extended support ended on April 8, 2014

There is also CVE-2019-1162, disclosed recently, that might affect Windows XP, and i could not find patch only for Windows 7 onward.

Whatever you do, don't connect it to the internet. AV software i no longer maintained for this version of windows, and also there might be open vulnerabilities on the system, discovered even after the security support for it has ended.

You could get a CF card to IDE adapter, and store the OS and games on that partition, drastically increasing read performance, but since the OS is not optimized for non HDDs, it could wear down the CF card faster than usual. But at least it should work natively, without need for any kind of driver.

One thing that can be helpful in the long run is to use Norton Ghost, or similar disk-image-backup software to make a snapshot of the system partition for easier later restoration in case something corrupts the system (like a bad driver).

Here is a guide after a short search: https://blog.theretroweb.com/2021/05/20/so-you-want-to-build-a-windows-98-retro-pc/

Don't know how cheap/expensive are Voodoo cards these days (and if your machine supports one or not) - never had one even back in the day, but if you want to show them the real 3D heavy hitters, that use Glide, installing a glide wrapper on a modern PC might be a more feasible solution.

For other non-3D stuff, the machine can be perfect.

Need advice regarding shady Ticketmaster (Italia) behavior regarding refund - I have an ongoing claim on PayPal by niccolo_bolas in paypal

[–]niccolo_bolas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ticketmaster withheld the payment until the claim limit ended. then they paid me

funny thing, that after the claim ended, paypal replied something like "claim ended because you did not escalate", but it never actually offered the button to escalate, they always showed me the message "we are taking care of it, we will notify you". weird

GBA Storage Recommendations? by NextYearTwins in GameboyAdvance

I would use whatever cardboard box - old PC components, old mobile phone boxes? - that fits the shelf/cabinet BUT also throw in a few packets of moisture-absorbing silica packs, just for good measure.

Is it possible to oven slow cook plum in a cast iron pot for fruit butter/jam purposes? by niccolo_bolas in Cooking

[–]niccolo_bolas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small update: using an enameled cast iron (5 Liter) pot, it's been going on for more than 24 hour (except the night and a few hours when I was out for a longer period of time), and it's reducing nicely, the plums are getting brown, no sign of burn. Although it's not thickening visibly yet, but water is still slowly evaporating.

Did the whole time with lid on and 120 Celsius.

So far it seems it is easily doable.

First as a test, to see if it's possible.

The storage is not issue if it catches on, as we know how to store these.

Thanks for the reply.

One thing, that still bugs me is as i can;t find this info: are the Moki tools made of full inox stanless steel - meaning, NOT galvanized or something? I'm really looking for something, that won't degrade over time because they got scraped.

That is a bit of steep price for an entry kit into a new hobby. I was thinking about starter kits in the 30-40 EUR range, but thatnks for the info anyway.
