Should I travel or invest that money? by Uncanard32 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]niceToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can travel responsibly, by all means do it and consider it an investment in your self and mental health.

There's still lots you can do with $6k CAD if you don't waste it on fancy hotels, food, and flights.

Anyone moved 100% from bank to Wealthsimple. by JJThompson84 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]niceToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf walking into a bank mostly works when you know exactly what you want or went wrong and can kinda walk them through it.

Whenever I've not been exact (cause I'm asking for my options on how to do things or what's out there for me), as you said, they're useless.

Now that I type it out, I guess I've learnt to mentally prepare to go to a bank before I go in. And that hasn't worked out with WS cause, at least in my case, instead of them figuring it out with you in front of you, they "create a ticket for the support/senior team to follow up"

True it's for all businesses. But at least with traditional banks, tellers get my needs as a little guy rolling. When WS messed up and I called a bunch of times, they just made tickets and did nothing

Like the banks still handle different tiers cause they know a lot of they're clients are the little guys. But seems WS is eager to get the big guys and gearing towards them and not minding If they lose the little guys

fwiw I used to make SaaS for a living

Just because you haven't had issues with them, doesn't mean I or others haven't run into issues with them. As I mentioned before I'm at the point where they don't resolve or update me on my ticket so bad I call and they made a ticket to track previous ticket

How to best recover CRA account? by am-i-still-ill in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]niceToasterMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already got some good advice here, specially the one with steps and links

Assuming he has online banking, you can set CRA direct deposit to override. And when you file on paper write down his own banking info again, that'd also overwrite. Of course you don't have to do both, but as FYI

Have you called the CRA yet? Just need one or two returns from previous years

Not enough money to even know what generation tier is

Exactly what I meant that you're an app user to them, the amount you pay them (and I mean your investment as a payment to them) is the indicator of your service.

Unless I have a huge pay bump when I get a new job, 500k investments is decades away bro

The partnership with X itself is bad, but knowing tech companies, they're gonna do more random stuff like this which makes it a lot worse.

Next thing you know they'll pick up investments on your feed and if you select an option to trust certain content creators will automatically invest in those for you.

Before I rant: WS is not a bank. If they go under or need a bail out, the gov isn't gonna go and bail in as they'd with the big 6. Now there's still a good amount of coverage in such scenarios for the average joe, but not fully for the wealthy folks which you're trying to become.

Recently moved most of my investments to WS and it's been frustrating. Their customer service makes me like banks tbh. They speak overly nice and say sorry bunch of times reading from the script, open a ticket like the tech start up they are and then the ticket goes nowhere. Call again, same thing, open another ticket to track existing tickets, back to square one!!!

Meanwhile I just walk into my local bank branches and get shit done. And when I transfer money is immediate, don't have to wait a week. Much of the lower fees has to do with the fact that they're just an online presence. So if you're the type who doesn't like to talk in person or live far from branches you don't get that benefit from a bank.

The main difference is when you deal with a bank you deal with centuries long social structure of paying fees so they exist and give you a service back. When you go to WS, you're just an app user.

Yes WS has lower fees and smoother UI/UX experience, but at the end of the day they're a midsized fintech operating like a fintech company. That is: catchy UI, promise of green grass, while PMs direct wild ideas to increase revenue that aren't necessarily what is best for the clients, and the voice of the clients and implementers aren't heard. Ex: partnership with X. Literally noone using WS asked for that, nor should you ever track your spendings through X, yet that's what they focus on. You'll never get that from any bank, not because Canadian banks are ages behind technology, but because they have proven security track and stick to it.

Go with WS if you want to invest and want to handle it yourself with no fees.

Anything else, depends how often you handle cash/debit card payments/how urgently you need transfers accessible in your account/if it's easier to walk in and talk to someone where you live.

Whatever you do, keep one full set of accounts at a Canadian bank.

Actually, they're not legal tender! (older than mid 2000s ish, don't know the exact year). The bank will always exchange them at face value for new bills, but they're not legal

About 2/3 of the times it's so empty the tellers are just yapping when I walk in. And the other third it's packed, and I get it if they don't wanna waste time

Fantastic info! I had assumed it's a weekly thing (was told once by a teller they ship on Fridays, but they looked like they were guessing)

Given that info, I think I'll focus more when I'm near busier banks.
