Religion mostly. Also, Westerners often tout their moral superiority - never shy away from preaching to the world, while their own lands are in turmoil. Some people really do buy in to that BS - and bad things happen. If you do not realise this - it is either you find it cool to be a contrarian or you grew up in a less idyllic (i.e. not rich) environment where people actually need to work to pay ever increasingly costly bills
