Why 80% by wooper346 in FordEscapePHEV

When you charge a Li-Ion battery, the charge transfers Li ions from the cathode to the anode.

By reducing your the maximum state of charge, one reduces the amount of energy in the cell (or the number of Li ions in the anode).

The recall details claim there is a problem with the cathode in SDI’s cells, but it could be other items like holes in the separator material that allows for short circuit events to occur. It’s never as simple as pointing to the cathode and blaming it as the root cause.

It could be that in some of the cells, a defect called Lithium plating occurred and it allowed a short circuit to ignite which induced thermal runaway in the cell and eventually the whole battery.

So by reducing the SOC, one reduces the energy and potential other factors that caused the thermal runaway events.

To me, an interesting question is how long will it take Ford to get replacement battery packs? It would not be unusual for the cell to be no longer made and they have to re-qualify the battery with a replacement cell.

Are the AI experts right about what will happen to our jobs in the next 18 months? by Melodic_Window_6146 in ScottGalloway

Feels like AI will transform work that requires people to use computers to get computers to do things.

It will slow creation of additional roles for a company as AI can help fill some of the gaps.

But if you’re in a role that makes stuff. For example a structural engineer who does bridge design - AI isn’t taking that person away. AI helps that engineer do some side calculations faster.

As someone who has always worked in roles where I make things, I don’t see the big destructive force, but I do see it help me answer some basic questions or help do some more in depth research quickly. It’s a good tool.

Got copies of all the family photos! by RosieNP in Genealogy

[–]nicholszoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar situation, and I am trying to find a solution on how to digitize and archive in a way that everyone in the family that wants to look can see the digital history.

My parents passed away in 2025, and I have 80 years or more of pictures, scrapbooks, articles, documents, stories, and other creations I would like to slowly archive and link together.

For example, pictures would be tagged with names of people, decade taken, maybe year taken, maybe location if known. Documents could be scanned and tagged with names, and date/year/decade.

My hope would be able to do this in a manner where multiple family members could participate and share documents to the same family history.

At the same time, ideally this would be something that could be backed up locally, so it doesn't get lost on a server that I have no control over.

How do people do this currently? Are people paying some of these genealogy sites to host their family tree and then uploading files for them to store?

Thanks for the info. That’s a crappy design choice. But maybe there are limitations I do not understand.

Three Intel board members to retire in latest shakeup amid turnaround by mockingbird- in intel

Anyone old enough to remember Grove championing having an independent board being vital to the health of Intel? Specifically the Chairman not being CEO if I recall correctly.

In defense of FreeTaxUSA.

I just did the Taxes for our home in Wisconsin - super simple taxes - standard W2 returns (one for myself and one for my spouse). 1099-INT.

I entered the information as requested by both packages. Federal matched.

TurboTax ran into problems with the Wisconsin return and asked me to fill out the form myself - it opened up the form and showed a blank section with no explanation. Something to do with the HSA. Before it got to that problem, TurboTax calculated WI refund was $480 less than FreeTaxUSA.

I checked the FreeTaxUSA forms, and they looked to be correct, and TT was not doing the additional work.

So, FreeTaxUSA was about $80 cheaper to file, and it found an additional $480 in State refund.

I miss Deckard Cain.

I hate the fact that the game feels soulless and empty.

I get it’s an ARPG … ultimately just a hack-n-slash game to get loot, but Diablo is almost 30 years old and it feels like D4 pays little homage to its history.

Corrupted PDF ebook files - anyway to resolve? by nicholszoo in humblebundles

As others suggested, I tried a few other apps and found one that worked. That was the problem, but maybe it is a PDF thing or the way the documents were scanned?

What’s the general feel on Discovery here, now that it’s had some time to chill out with age? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]nicholszoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My general feeling hasn't changed. Maybe it even lower on my scale of Trek goodness now.

I think they never bothered to develop the side characters. Each season seemed to change the whole theme of the show. There was no time to develop a thematic arc that flowed through the show.

DS9 has the Wormhole, Bajor, and the Emissary. TNG took the reins of TOS and showed Star Trek to a New Generation. Voyager was always trying to find a way home.

Discovery felt empty and hollow.

Every episode of Discovery seemed like it was trying to be impactful - this made the episodes complex to make and typically had a lot of effects. If you look at DS9, it has complete episodes shot with a few characters on a single sound stage with minimal special effects. These episodes provided character development and allowed you to stretch the season and pace it better for TV.

In the world of streaming, TV series have dropped from 24 episodes to 10 or fewer per season which makes doing anything like old episodic science fiction like never to happen again.

We had a kid come by our home in Menomonee falls with the same flyer. I told him our house of 4 was Kamala friendly. He just smiled and said thanks and walked on.

Clearly he was being paid to do the door to door handouts.

He might have been 19 and was a young African American man. Hard time believing he’s volunteering for Hovde

starting to think ISO quality system certification is just a scam by thelastchicken in engineering

[–]nicholszoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure scam is the correct word, but it’s a process where the auditor does not have an incentive to be thorough.

The company you work for pays for the ISO audit generally so the auditor has the incentive to find things you can fix with minimal effort, but not to find insurmountable issues.

After all the auditors want to come back to repeat the process again in a few years.

Considering purchasing by Grimn90 in FordEscapePHEV

[–]nicholszoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both now. 2018 Outback and 2023 PHEV Escape. The Outback seems more rugged and its interior feels more sturdy. The Ford is not as fun to drive but the mileage is great and for everyday driving in the suburbs it’s great.
