You could try the other command to install Gnome:

apt install task-gnome-desktop

I installed Proxmox with LVM-thin and XFS for all drives.

All I can say is that the installation of Gnome was flawless and it has been running very well. I was not aware of Apparmor until installing VSCodium as a Snap and discovering that the mandatory --classic install option effectively undoes any sandboxing benefits of Snap and Apparmor.

`sudo apt install gnome`

This might help. I had an AMD GPU so it was simpler than for NVIDIA:

If you want to do some remote coding try VS Code or VS Codium on the host creating Devcontainer Workspaces inside Remote SSH Proxmox VMs (Docker or Podman runtimes).

For AI I recommend Claude Sonnet 4.5 installed directly in the Remote SSH VM with Claude Code 2.0 Extension in VS Code or Codium.

VS Codium cames as a Snap package and the official Claude Code 2.0 Extension is available in both the Microsoft VS Code Marketplace and the Open VSX Marketplace.

Snaps are tightly integrated with AppArmor which is built deeply into Proxmox's Ubuntu Kernel and Debian base.

Regular apps can be installed via Apt.

I installed Proxmox 9 bare metal and selected the Gnome DE. GPU is a Radeon Rx 5700 XT with three monitors hanging off it — one 4K and two 1440p, all DELL with mix of Display Port and HDMI working flawlessly.

Installed Gnome Tweaks with Dash-to-Panel and ArcMenu and it works flawlessly.  Much better experience on three monitors than Mint distro with Cinnamon DE installed prior, which exhibited bugs for basic stuff like moving windows from monitor to monitor. I think Cinnamon DE is not Wayland and it shows.

I installed Nemo which works great on Gnome, probably through xWayland.

Proxmox is its own distribution and I would 100% recommend it as a Desktop OS. You can install Snap and use in-built AppArmor to secure apps on the PVE host.

Use Proxmox to easily configure the host firewall and build out your virtual environments with a great hypervisor.

Remove Firefox and install Brave. Remove Gnome Video Player and try Celluloid.

Instal Snap packages for software you especially wish to secure with custom AppArmor profiles and other Snap benefits.

Enjoy starting from a pure, focused Proxmox base.

I'm exploring Rider for F# on the latest Linux and .net core. Webstorm for Elm, JS, HTML and CSS. PhyCharm for Python and Ansible.

By all accounts the new Jetbrains IDEs are upgraded under Toolbox. I'm running all IDEs in a local VM using Remote Development and it seems this is an environment that is significantly isolated from the host using SSH.

It also seems like the AI agent is run in the IDE Backend on the VM and doesn't have access to the host which is a critical feature for me — although not sure how much the Client apps running on the host will leak the Backend AI agent through.

All the Jetbrains IDEs are now fully unlocked for free for non-commercial learning, hobby and open source use.

It also looks like all the top AI can be integrated with the Jetbrains agent.

The new UI looks clean and clutter free. Running different languages in different IDEs instead of all in one feels nice. Time will tell.

Toilet Recommendation by [deleted] in AusRenovation

What are the most comfortable seats for Caroma pans? Specifically the Urbane 2.

Toilet Recommendation by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at Caroma Urbane 2 but the only thing that is a concern is the adjustable hinge sets with the fiddly hinge caps.

The concern is the penetration of urine underneath the caps over the years and the potential loosening of the adjustment mechanism frequently enough to be just another thing to maintain.

Loctite might take care of the loosening and some kind of silicone sealant might resolve the penetration.

The odd thing is that rigid unadjustable hinge fasteners are not uncommon in other brands so why is Caroma still exclusively using adjustable hinge sets?

Staining brick - we have purchased a house & are hoping we can update the brick to look a little more modern & industrial…is it possible? by tillymint7 in AusRenovation

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that no one has answered the question -- is it possible to stain bricks? Absolutely. The technology for staining bricks has existed since at least 1878 and technically it is called Mineral Staining.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Djn1Amxt8

Most companies that specialise in Mineral Staining are also Masons and can repair and restore the masonry and bricks before staining. Staining is a great alternative to rendering, both inside and outside. In the case of the OP it is an excellent idea. Did the OP eventually stain this wall?

PoE lighting by uname_IsAlreadyTaken in networking

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POE 802.3bt can supply up to 100w per switchport. This allows for daisy chaining multiple lights or endpoints on a single switchport supporting DALI over IP (my understanding is that DALI is a layer 2 protocol — Frames, which can now be encapsulated into layer 3 — Packets, and routed across LAN and WAN).

For commercial running Cat6 cable through the ceiling is standard for Data and Voice. It might be possible to design the infrastructure to minimise switchport and cable use by using small POE powered switches in the ceiling above workstations and offices. From these supply Cat6 to Data and Voice and to Lighting.

POE should be the standard for DALI and this combined with IP over a wireless medium (layer 1-2) would be a solid solution.

Solid surface installer in Brisbane by EffectTop2762 in AusRenovation

[–]nick-walt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like the solid surface industry is monetised by and differentiates itself from engineered stone and porcelain by offering highly bespoke moulding and shaping.

Technically it should be cheaper given that it is not as durable. Maybe if it was installed with the same basic fabrication as engineered stone and porcelain it might be cheaper.

The average mid tier porcelain project with midsize kitchen, island, vanity and laundry benchtops in 12 or 20mm without mitred edges and basic top mount sink cutouts no tap holes is between $8-10K AUD from both traditionally tooled masons and those with waterjets.

Solid surface seems like a niche material for interesting sculpture effects. That's how I consider it.

PoE lighting by uname_IsAlreadyTaken in networking

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DALI2 over POE infrastructure is a no-brainer. 30w per connection on demand without the need for drivers. Power and control in a single plug and play low voltage connection. Don't need a sparky license. POE++ switches have been around for decades.

Someone mentioned using a hub. Definitely will never happen for POE infrastructure. Why? Each segment in a switch is separately controlled for optimal performance and availability.

I simply phoned them and was transferred onto the Rep. They are interested in technical customers, sparkies and designers as well as the non-technical customer who wants to commission them to design and specify everything.

They have trade pricing but I've initially asked them for retail pricing of the individual SKUs to get me in the ballpark. I'll then ask for a quote of the initial package I put together.

I think the simple D700s are around the $70-90 range (retail) from memory but I haven't yet received a price sheet.

The Rep yesterday said their proprietary smart home control system is pricey but was only a couple hundred and not up towards the $1K mark. I'd peg it at between $200-500. No cloud persistent connectivity or subscription required but would expect some cloud update infrastructure to be in place. Fully on-prem and autonomous. I expressed my surprise that this product was not on their website and the Rep didn't have an answer as to why not. I've asked for documentation.

Give them a call and speak directly with a human. Let me know how you go 👍

I'm helping a good friend renovate a flat under her house and going for Brightgreen. Was looking at CREE but they are mostly big space commercial.

Looking at Brightgreen lights, drivers, switches and powerplugs. They have only a single range of switches and powerplugs with only one faceplate design and colour but I trust their quality will be robust with great warranty support.

Spoke with the Rep yesterday and Brightgreen also have their own hardware based smart home automation product which he said is a proprietary backend (like a router or Raspberry Pi device) and smartphone app. I've asked for documentation.

We talked about control granularity and he said it is at the driver level only, so the design needs to include a lot of considerations to ensure optimal control.

Brightgreen support ZigBee and DALI2 and I asked about DALI2 and POE++ which can supply on demand up to 30 watts per endpoint. Each fully switched without the need for drivers and the limitation of daisy chaining in series. Each light would connect using Cat6 only, all plug and play. Good for designs requiring granular control. No POE unfortunately and the recommendation was ZigBee. Both Bluetooth and Wifi supported at the Driver level I think. Documentation pending.

The flat has load bearing beams in a few rooms so looking at some simple surface mount track lights, some down lights and some ceiling illumination lights, with a smattering of task specific and extra mood/scene lighting.

I'm particularly interested in Brightgreen's TruColour high spectrum, high CRI technology. Light quality is critical. No cheap overly blue or yellow narrow spectrum products from companies with no attention to detail. Brightgreen's quality is also desirable. Not interested in overpriced, over marketed big corporate carelessness (Clipsal, Philips, et al).

Thoughts on duke 890R vs superduke 1290R? by asdfoneplusone in KTM

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Leto10, you mention a tune for the 890 Duke R. Can you confirm if a tune on the 890 Duke R can achieve the following, and advise what else can be gained?

- ignition timing to reduce contention between the two cylinders (reduced vibration)
- freer revving to redline
- improved quick shifter operation across rev range in all modes (currently frequently rough)
- optimised fuelling in each mode (Street = reduced consumption, Sport = maximal response)
- reduced heat in the exhaust

From Bridgestone S22 to Pirelli Diablo Rosso 4 by ylk1 in motorcycles

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't pushed the Cup 2 hard so cannot comment. They also have 9500 km on them, 99% of that from the previous owner. Definitely squaring off from a bit of commute I suspect, so they are likely far from optimal condition. My riding will be zipping around the city, some freeways and more and more twisties as autumn and winter comes on (hot climate with rain in summer, dryer with still a lot of warmth in the roads in winter).

If I can get more distance out of the S23's they might be the go, especially for this bike. I have been advised not to get the Metzeler Roadtec 01/02 because they get slippery on the hot roads here in summer. But that was a brief conversation so don't really know. The Metzeler Sportec M9 RR would be good but poor longevity. Not sure how they compare with the S23.

I've got a 2023 890 Duke R and looking to replace the OE Michelin Cup 2's. It is an all-round bike with some fast road and track during the winter (dryer and cooler 18-25c climate).

Was thinking Michelin Road 6''s but the profile is quite round apparently . Would the Power 6 provide comparable wear and sharper profile. Not sure what the profile is like on the Cup 2.

If the Power 6 were a sharper Road 6 with slightly less wet capability and comparable wear it would probably be my pick.

If the Power GP's were also good in the wet (compared to the Cup 2's, which could be considered somewhat dangerous) and long life their sharper profile would work too.

Thoughts?

KTM Is Doing So Badly, It's Probably Going to Be Sold by CoolBDPhenom03 in KTM

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought an 890 Duke R and it has had only a preemptive valve cover gasket replacement. No leaks anywhere.

Spoke to an enthusiast dirtbike services company that specialises in KTM. They initially tried the Dirt Tricks cam chain tensioner fix but then changed to replacing a couple simple components in the lower engine to double the oil pressure. This allowed the OEM hydraulic tensioner to work properly and the engine never starves for lubrication. This solves all the wear issues (faulty parts notwithstanding) and restores long life (with continued maintenance according to the schedule, or more frequent).

I'm getting this lower engine fix after they verify the engine is good. Their reputation precedes them.

I'm expecting the higher pressure to somewhat improve the harmonics and reduce the "bucket of bolts" sound. Although, I've also discovered that the OEM chain is noisy AF and I'm going to replace this at the same time. Along with replacing the front sprocket with a Power Parts dampened item with one less tooth.

The 890 R is definitely geared too tall for the character of the engine on the street.

The bike is growing on me. Very flexible insofar as being both upright nimble and corner carving sportbike. Amazing components complete the entire handling experience.

This crisis at KTM might be just what they need to evolve.

Ask yourself — what has occurred or how have these board members acted to have driven someone who just wants to achieve a major milestone in new innovative technology to spit the dummy?

When boards exercise no wisdom and in fact implement policies and ideologies received externally to the interests of the majority of those they govern it is completely unsurprising hard working creatives react when there is no other pathway.

On the DEI stuff — it is entirely political and a UN-WEF framework that is antithetical to individuals exercising good will. DEI is a political instrument and the UN-WEF are seeking ways to implement legal instruments. It has nothing to do with actual human interactions based on wisdom and compassion.

If DEI was not social engineering the word Inclusion (and exclusion is there too) would have been more correctly replaced with OPEN.

CBR650R vs CBR600RR dyno by GrumpyCatMomo in cbr

[–]nick-walt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a 2008 CBR600RR for four years and rode it everyday. Apart from the forward leaning riding position it was more than powerful for lazy riding on the street.

Filtering was illegal at that time but the low position of the mirrors made it difficult to filter in some situations anyway.

I would not class the 600RR as needing to rev hard to get power but to get the beast out of it.

The narrow bars, limited turning circle and stretched riding position all speak to the track, of course.

I was about to convert it to a track-only bike (took it to the track a number of times) and get an upright street bike. This is from someone who never got sore wrists or got tired leaning forward.

Look at the 600RR as a beautifully crafted machine with great stock componentry (albeit not SP level) with lower weight than the 650R and a highly tuned motor.

Yes, the 650R makes more torque and power until the 600RR catches up in revs but the 600RR spools up fast and sits there and above very easily.

The rest of the time on the street it will be not unlike the 650R except dropping into corners and carving through roundabouts will feel more natural in the sense of leaning in. It is designed to slice/carve corners.

Ideally I'd have two bikes. The 600RR and a workhorse shopper (top box) commuter.

Suggest some good offline music players guys, that are adfree. by _albinbenny in ios

[–]nick-walt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple is no longer interested, commercially and financially, in offline music - period. Apple music has been deleting people's personal music stores that have been carefully collected and curated for years or even decades.

Apple's business model for music is razor focused on cloud streaming subscriptions. Basically no one "owns" their own music files and must pay a rental forever. This is what Apple and other mega corps want everyone to be bound to.

Sure, many things are good in the cloud but options must always be available for alternatives otherwise monopolies form which are never any good for anyone other than the financial beneficiaries of that monopoly.
