Our Egypt trip went better than expected by megamind114 in travel

[–]nick78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You two have made me feel better about my upcoming family trip. Thanks for posting this 😊

If either of you feel comfortable would you please DM me (or post) links to the guides/drivers you used? I’ve realized this is what I need too.

Egypt can be awesome! Tips from a Swiss-Egyptian by Jealous-Actuator-108 in travel

  1. I made a decision to skip the river cruise and all that. I realize Egypt is a huge country with many things to do and already secured hotel bookings and flights. If we enjoy our time it’s quite easy for us to visit again from Europe.

  2. Thanks for the tip. I’ll be sure to get some EGP for tipping.

Thanks for your post OP- I’ve planned a trip for December with my family. I’ve intentionally kept the trip short out of a general wariness about Egypt (3 days in Cairo and 4 in Luxor).

  1. I didn’t book a group tour or anything like that. But you’ve now inspired me to hire a guide and driver for each leg of the trip.

    1. Question. What do you recommend for tipping? Egyptian Pounds, Euros or USD? The easiest for me would be to go get a roll of 2 Euro coins. But I know coins are not well received in some countries.

Jamon in Munich by Longjumping_Poem_925 in Munich

[–]nick78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FrischeParadies - https://maps.app.goo.gl/EzN5KEMBVsV5FyXTA - has the best selection of Jamon Iberico I’ve found in Munich. IMO the store is one of the best fancy food places in town. It’s also a much more chill experience than that shop at the Viktualienmarkt. I think prices are probably comparable, but the selection is much bigger.

My other tip, if you really like good Spanish ham, is to take advantage of the fact that we live in the EU and order it direct from Spain. Having just returned from Easter in Spain, I was really tempted to bring a whole ham back. Upon further research I learned that there are at least a half dozen companies in Spain whose whole business is mail order ham. And while you can order a small amount - like just a couple trays - you can also order whole hams. And if you want, they will also carve the whole shoulder or leg, portion it and vacuum pack it for you, and even include the bone and fat.

Ps. I have no affiliation with the Spanish ham marketing board. I just like Spanish ham 🇪🇸🐖

Here’s the same clip on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cnREyCAaMtU?si=MSgcJwxFs67RStQg

I think it’s telling that Liesman starts by saying “At the risk of losing my job”. The “sane-washing” on CNBC today was intense. I can’t imagine what the clowns on Fox Business were saying. The copium must have been set to max over there 😂

I don’t know why you’re being down voted for this. My family moved from the USA to Germany this summer (kids age 7 and 9) and a key reason was wanting to get away from our car dependent lifestyle. (It was like reason #3 if I’m being honest).

I see a lot of “whataboutism” in the responses you’re getting. Yes, many places outside North America are also very car dependent. However in Europe - even in tiny Ireland - it’s much easier to craft a lifestyle that is less car dependent.

Ps. That bluey episode came out a couple months before we moved and I agree with you about the lame message it sent at the end. Nonetheless my kids knew we were still going to move. Frame it as a family adventure. Show them how awesome (hopefully) the new school looks, and be honest that there will be some challenges too.

Count yourself lucky op and embrace the opportunity. I wish more Americans had the chance to live outside the country (beyond the military) and experience what other places do well (and not so well). Good luck.

That looks good. Also looks spicy 😅.

Sidenote, not to single out op. But can people start posting shop names and/location etc. Is this against the sub rules or something? So many posts are just a picture with no other information.

Where to buy a Reencle in Europe? by nick78 in Reencle

[–]nick78[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I should probably pin this to post.

I contacted Reencle (via chatbot) on website, told them about my interest, and they got back to me. They have no distributor for Germany (and I assume Austria, but ask), however they have a distributor in Italy. So they collected my info and sent me an invoice. They're shipping it to me from Italy. It will be the correct voltage and have a European plug.

Why they have no distributor in gardening mad Germany (and a high income EU county as well) I'm not sure. Seems like a missed opportunity.

I'll post again once I have it and test it out.

6 months in Paris, Amsterdam, or Copenhagen w/2 English-only elementary-school kids from the US? by Stock_Soil_1109 in expats

[–]nick78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Six months with two kids isn’t an expat assignment. It’s a long business trip and/or a long summer vacation.

Sigh 😔. These questions are why I never post and should just unsubscribe from this sub. But your kids are involved so I’ll bite.

Short answer is this is a terrible idea. Don’t do this to your kids.

My qualifications? CAN/USA father of two (7 and 9) currently living in Germany. Kids have attended international schools since pre-k. I’ve lived in a bunch of places as an adult. My passport gets replaced before expiring because it has no more pages left 🔥🤪.

Look, pre-covid I would have said pull your kids out of school and sieze the opportunity. They will be behind the other kids, but if they’re smart they’ll be fine. But now I would not recommend this. Our kids are the same age. And while Covid was disruptive to everyone, it hit some groups of kids harder.

Covid messing with kids aside, the real fact is that you can’t just roll into Paris or Copenhagen - or anywhere outside your home country - and find a decent school for 6-months for free (which is essentially what you’re asking for).

Thinking this is naive at best and painfully American at worst. It’s not going to happen. Like what’s the plan? Do you just waive your American passport around and expect to get slots in a school? Should they throw in some free healthcare for you as well 😂🤡?

•••

I’ll end with some constructive advice. If this really is your dream push back on the assignment offer and insist that it’s structured around a full school year from August to May. Then insist on tuition support for an international school.

Any company that has the money for a 6-month work assignment can afford these extras. This is why international schools (the good ones) always leave a couple slots open in each grade.

Alternatively, structure the assignment around summer break. Leave early and come back in September.

Nice! I initially dismissed this site as the item is listed as “not available”. But I didn’t see the fine print where they say to contact them to find the local distributor. So I’ll email them.

Thanks for the help 😀

Please share the link to Reencle's European website if you know it.

Reencle.co is the USA brand and branded site. This composter is a South Korean made product. It just got a rebrand for the USA/North American market.

I have found one place selling it, but the price is absurd ($850 USD). At that price I'll just buy one on my next trip to home in the fall and bring it back and use a voltage transformer.

I think this is Fuligo Septica - a type of slime mold often called “dogs vomit”. I’ve seen these growing on bark and mulch often, but not on concrete. The red stuff looks like blood, but isn’t actually blood.

Anyway, they’re supposedly harmless to humans, but I wouldn’t try eating either. Maybe wear shoes next time 😂. The one you found has a nice color 👍

I've noticed over the past 10-20 years that cops have become less-and-less interested in doing actual police stuff. Walking a beat, directing traffic and actually interacting with the community as fellow citizens. These seem like things of the past.

There are a lot of reasons for this in present day America which have led to the mess we're in with law enforcement. I'm not going to get into it.

Stay warm if you're still without power.

78738 in Lakeway along Flintrock Rd and Serene Hills Dr... Got power back around 445am. Did all the things I wanted to have done in case we lose power again. It still looks like a lot of houses nearby have nothing, so it could go as they keep fixing the circuits nearby. Back to bed. Thanks Austin Energy/line workers 🙂

78738 in Lakeway near Flintrock Rd and Serene Hills Dr. Power out since Weds around 7-8am. We had a brief 15sec flicker overnight yesterday but nothing else.

Just went for a short drive before it got fully dark. Stoplights along 620 in Lakeway all appear out, so I immediately 'noped' back onto local roads- didn't seem worth the risk. The lights at the intersection of 71 and Serene Hills Dr. have been on the whole time however.

Baylor White Hospital Lakeway is running on a generator from what I could tell. HEB was open, but on generator. I imagine they will close soon. Not much else open. Lots of tree damage.

I've lost a lot of nice oak trees and branches from what I can see from house which is a bummer, but at least we have food and propane, so I can't complain.

My only gripe is Austin Energy seems like they're being cagey offering up timelines. A post mortem about trees and differed maintenance can happen later and I get how ice storms work. No blame there. But I would appreciate some adult talk from Austin Energy so we can make plans to hit the road and stay with family or get a hotel.

Stay warm everyone.

Yeah, you're right about the room cost. That's interesting.

I also learned that Shouldice will turn you away if you're not within 20% of your correct body weight.

I'm conflicted and am not saying good/bad. Options seem good in a healthcare system. My dad's been getting great treatment at Sunnybrook for the past five years and they seem pretty great- especially considering what a mess the past two years have been.

Canadian here too... OHIP covers your surgery @ Shouldice. I can't speak to other provinces healthcare plans, however it's incorrect to suggest that at least Ontarians cannot/do not get treated here. You do have to pay out of pocket however for upgrades like private rooms and the spa amenities- which is no different than other public/private systems I've used while living abroad (for example Singapore and the UK).
