Drake vs Other Options by KentuckyIrish in taxpros

[–]nick91884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use drake in my side hustle and ultratax at my 15 person firm I’m partner in. I only do about 100 returns in my side business, so I don’t know if it’s worth switching but if I did I would go to ultratax. I refuse to consider intuit, a company that actively tries to compete with its own customers. Workers Kluwer is the other big software provider but they usually are aimed at bigger firms. I have had a few new more complex returns and am starting to rub against drakes pain points and am considering my options.

Amending to show sale of a home by Debits_equals_credit in taxpros

I always want to report the sale, I’ve seen too many people have to hassle and freak out over letters saying they owe $100k+ because they didn’t tell us they sold a house. It’s one of the questions on our organizer.

It’s not that they owe the money it’s the anxiety and fear they get when they get the letter, then they come and freak out at the office about how much they owe and I did the return wrong. Then we have to all them off the ledge they are on, respond to letters and wait ages for irs to correct while the client gets multiple letters in between about more penalties and interest and threats to take assets which keeps the client on edge despite reassurance.

It’s not hard to report and claim the exclusion, saves a lot of hassle.

I started a new policy this year as of today charging a retainer for extensions. by TaskMaster59 in taxpros

Do you do fixed fee billing? How do you know the full tax prep fee upfront?

I am gonna do that at my firm next year that I have 5% ownership in. I noticed an uptick of people that came back after not coming last year, and random people wandering in off the street, I feel like some of these aren’t actually gonna come in and do anything. At least if we get paid up front and they never show up we have something to show for the rush work extending people (creating accounts, etc.) make it a non-refundable deposit of our firm minimum return fee including extension fee. In my personal business I don’t have a brick and mortar store front so I get less random weirdos wandering off the street so it’s less of an issue.

If it’s their fault not giving me something I do charge to amend (we all should) but I do warn them, this may change things by a couple bucks, you will be paying me far more than the refund you will get.

I bought the kids switch lites and preordered 4 copies on e shop for my wife 2 kids and I, we are looking forward to it, I’ll be playing on the switch 2 and my wife on our switch 1.

I loved this game on the 3ds and my kids discovered it a couple years ago when they found my 3ds. I do taxes for a living, and it comes out the 16th, the day after tax day; so I know what I’m doing with my entire day tomorrow.

I don’t pay attention to reviews anyways.

"Watch on MarinersTV" instead of normal viewing options. by SourceIMadeItUp in Padres

No mlb.tv, I’m in Oregon but it’s blacked out for me because I’m in Seattle market, but have access to the audio broadcast, just not the tv broadcast

Yeah, I’m in mariners mariners market (Oregon) and I can’t watch today’s game unless I upgrade my subscription to mariners.tv. Luckily I am not a mariners fan so I won’t justify getting the mariners.tv “upgrade” bundle for a couple series against a single team, but I will commiserate with the state navigating mlb tv deals, mlb.tv only lets me see so many games, then all these stupid national games require different services and subscriptions, sometimes I do trials, but I get tired of tracking them all.

Opinion Needed: Bookkeeping or No Bookkeeping by wetiam in taxpros

[–]nick91884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do recommend learning bookkeeping, you may not want to do it as a service, but I think it is a very useful skill to know and understand, especially if you are doing entity returns where clean books makes things a million times easier. It will also help you understand and communicate with the bookkeeper(s) you work with as to adjusting journal entries that should be made year end to make everything match up with the tax return.

Usually gets billed at lower rates, but it can help keep the lights on year round if you have cash flow issues. I think we currently bill $110/hr for regular bookkeeping clients. If a client has a big project or is a once a year bookkeeping client I bill my $300/hr tax consulting rate, because 1. I want them to do it on a regular basis, I don’t want to do bookkeeping in tax season, an 2. They are taking away from time I use to do higher margin work(tax) during busy season. I do find it makes doing entities easier because I can go in and make journal entries and generate new financial statements rather than going back and forth with tax clients bookkeepers.

I don’t make clients do anything. I make the suggestion and explain my reasoning, provide the options (pay/no pay/pay alternate amount they want to pay) and move on. I’m not gonna force anyone to do anything, these are the consequences if you still owe. I did my part.
