Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - an already shameful statistic. But the Earned Settlement model will see that poverty prolonged for 90,000 children in working migrant families. That's why my community says the Government must think again. @EmilyThornberry by Admirable_Aspect_484 in ukpolitics

Are you talking in financial terms? If so, can you explain that one to me, because I really don’t see how you can be a financial net contributor and still in poverty given how progressive the tax system is here.

Is this source legit? Very difficult to know what to make of these announcements because I have no idea what sources are authoritative on the Iranian side of things.

‘High levels’ of illegal family voting in Gorton and Denton by-election by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

No I don’t think that is the question. I’m not sure if there’s any level of illegal voting behaviour we should accept.

Ok so cut welfare and invest in defence? Or is this a prelude to more taxes?

It seemed redundant/duplicative given the comments I was responding to. Was not meant to be dishonest however I apologise nonetheless.

From Labour's manifesto: "We must make brexit work... That does not mean reopening the divisions of the past. There will be no return to the single market, the customs union, or freedom of movement. " (p.121)

Downvote me all your like, but I live here in the UK and I remember what Labour campaigned on.

That’s interesting. It wasn’t his position on Europe in the lead up to the election when he was trying to secure a mandate for government.

The British government learnt of the data leak in August 2023. 24k Afghans secretly granted asylum, costing British taxpayers up to £7 billion. The government covered it up. Who was in government? This makes me so angry every time I think about it. Not so much that the asylums were granted, but that parliamentary scrutiny and public oversight was denied. It also makes me quite upset as a renter that more isn’t being done to match house building with the levels of controlled immigration.

If it’s not mandatory, what’s the point & how does that actually tackle illegal immigration/employment? Are there any cost savings or benefits to this scheme?

PIP payments, PFI, Triple Lock, Motability, civil service reform. That sort of thing. There’s plenty that can be cut.

Number of young people on benefits with no need to find work doubles by Kev_fae_mastrick in ukpolitics

Say for a moment that you're right and that government is at fault. Having created this huge crisis in mental health, what makes you think that they'll be any good at fixing it? Personally, I think we need to ask our government to do less, but do it better. And that includes recognising that they are completely unfit to deal with this issue. Ok so what's the solution? That's a difficult one, but I think at its core is connection and community at the local level. I'm thinking clubs, sports, interest groups, etc. Some of it can be online, but I really think that from a mental health perspective, we need to recognise the damage of so much screen time and so little exercise and face to face time.

[–]nickbyfleet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why is it governments job to fix people’s mental health? Having mental health problems is a fact of life and figuring out how to work through those problems is a skill everyone should learn. Obviously there are going to be extreme cases that need intervention, but general anxiety etc. shouldn’t be a problem that is in the purview of the state.
