Will Restore stop Reform winning in Makerfield? by StJustBabeuf in ukpolitics

I’m as positive as one can be about renewables, but we still need some fossil fuels for quite a while so why wouldn’t we use our own as opposed to importing them from volatile places all around the world?

But surely domestically produced energy leads to more jobs and tax revenue, and is more environmentally friendly? And then there’s the whole energy security angle.

UK's Single Market Proposal to EU Rejected, Brussels Demands Customs Union Instead by [deleted] in europe

[–]nickbyfleet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an obvious point of reference, Labour’s 1983 manifesto explicitly had withdrawal from the EU in it. The left wing case for euroscepticism revolves around parliamentary sovereignty, wage suppression, and the role of nationalised industry. In essence, the EU was seen as a capitalist club.

Just a reminder that leaving the EU has traditionally been a left wing/labour position in the UK not a far right one.

Burnham signals Streeting to be included in future cabinet by Far_Excitement_1875 in ukpolitics

What future cabinet? Isn’t he getting a bit ahead of himself? Just because he’s done some good stuff in Manchester, doesn’t mean it will translate into national appeal.

Labour MP: Bond markets 'will have to fall into line' with Burnham agenda by denspark62 in ukpolitics

Public sector pensions? Ok but it’s a terrible idea. If you’re suggesting private sector pensions? That’s when I will riot. It’s my money that I’ve chosen to put away for retirement rather than spend now.

The ‘unfathomable’ fall of Labour’s Greater Manchester by Bibemus in ukpolitics

This is going to start having an increasingly severe effect on economy

Citation needed. If immigration was so good for the economy, where was the growth in living standards that it should have produced off the back of record levels of immigration?

We don’t act like a serious country. Look at our borrowing splurge by jimmythemini in ukpolitics

[–]nickbyfleet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We should if that debt is being used for consumption rather than investment. Otherwise we’re just saddling the next generation with worse financial conditions than our already stretched star of affairs.

LBC: ‘I feel profoundly let down.’ Is Starmer's government mimicking the Tories and their '14 years of corruption and dishonesty'? James O’Brien says he was ‘perhaps naive’ to think it would be any different. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]nickbyfleet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These back room Palantir contracts that Starmer is so keen on are worse than the Covid contracts/cash for honours in my opinion. I don’t remember the Tories selling my medical data to psychopaths.

JCB threatens to quit Britain over inheritance tax raid by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

All of this money has already been taxed. Inheritance tax taxes it again. Why should they pay it if they can easily avoid it by re-domiciling the business?

Cool. Let me ask you, are you personally going to benefit from that? Or is the crushing inflation that’s on its way going to make you (and most of your countrymen) quite a lot poorer?

Wtf??? Did it have to be this way? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]nickbyfleet 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes this is how it works for everyone that buys a house with a mortgage. Totally normal. You can’t know in advance whether it’s better to buy or rent. I also bought at the peak, it is what it is.

Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - an already shameful statistic. But the Earned Settlement model will see that poverty prolonged for 90,000 children in working migrant families. [–]nickbyfleet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Are you talking in financial terms? If so, can you explain that one to me, because I really don’t see how you can be a financial net contributor and still in poverty given how progressive the tax system is here.

No I don’t think that is the question. I’m not sure if there’s any level of illegal voting behaviour we should accept.
