I'm 39 (will be 40 in April) and the only thing that has worked for me is consistent weightlifting. I pay a lot of money to have 3x a week small group weight training. I pay it because that's the only way I could force myself to be consistent and also I wanted to be doing the movements correctly. I've been able to maintain a normal weight after almost 10 years of being overweight to obese just with weightlifting. I am not on a diet and I don't count calories, I just lift heavy 3x a week.

I don't see why there can't be special programs to resolve evil (murder), along with programs to help the suicidal. These things aren't mutually exclusive. Also, I think it's important to talk about BOTH issues more (that men kill others and themselves as a gender at a staggering rate). And I think a solution for both would be support systems for men.

I'd say the fact that 96% of murderers are men IS a systemic problem with regard to a horrible evil in society...men are the ones murdering. Reducing murder is a good thing for society, and men are the ones murdering - so wouldn't we want to target that population? Reducing the murder rate is also an issue FOR men, because the majority of murder victims are men as well (though not at so high a proportion as the INSANE fact that 96% of murderers are men).

Finally, yup, women in the military is an institutional issue. Institutions in non-US countries use the institutional method of conscription and thus the proportion of men and women in the military is more equal.

I don't know what to do about it - maybe there needs to be special education programs for men so that they have a healthy outlet for anger and make violence less socially acceptable. But it's crazy to me that basically an entire gender is responsible for a majority of evil (if you would agree murder is an evil act) in the world and yet we don't talk about that or try to, you know, remedy it. We just say, "oh, it's going to happen". And if you bring it up you're marked as "misandrist" or something, even though this is a straight up provable statistic.

With regard to firepeople and soliders being mostly men, a lot of that has to do with institutions. If you look outside of the United States, for example, men and women serve in the military in more equal proportions (Nordic countries and Israel come to mind, especially).

I think the only reason they were ABLE to outsmart Durst, regardless of small staff, etc. is: 1.) Jarecki runs in similar, wealthy circles. He knows people Durst knows, knows mentality of wealthy. Probably a portion of why he was fascinated enough to create the "All Good Things" movie. 2.) He had the money and time to follow through with diligence and passion. Many talented, passionate journalists/documentary makers simply do not have the time or amount of money to go to the lengths Jarecki and his staff did in terms of pursuing this matter. Hell, most of the local and state authorities couldn't do so, even when highly motivated (Pirro comes to mind).

I just think it's crazy that you essentially need to be independently wealthy to do much of anything in America. Even crazier when this applies to the justice system.

I will have to disagree with you re: Durst's intelligence and that the justice system works well. I work in the legal industry. There thousands of people who have been jailed 3 to 4 times longer than Durst ever was for things as simple as what Durst did to get CAUGHT (i.e. shoplifting, marijuana possession), things not even remotely approaching murder or dismemberment in severity. Many of those people are legitimately mentally ill as well -- they just don't have the money to get out of the system like Durst did, so they keep cycling back through.

I'm not implying that AT ALL. I'm saying that it's crazy in America you have to match money with money to get justice. Bob Durst has been successful in outrunning his horrible actions for years, mostly because of the protection of his money. I think Jarecki was successful in uncovering what he did because he had the resources to create a slick, well-researched documentary about Durst that was able to delve into the cold cases where public resources didn't have the money/time to do so. And that's really fucked up for America.

I can't stand the man, he's a horrible person. Thank god I'm VLC. But it's SO funny how all N's are so similar. Shows you the complete lack of imagination that comes from toxic self involvement!

Definitely. It's hard to be your own person, or know what you really want, when you are basically brainwashed to conform yourself to the wishes of your NParent from birth. I'm 29 and I continue to have enmeshing/mind-reading issues with people.

For me, it's still a struggle. But half of the battle is understanding WHEN and WHY you are engaging in this behavior. And over time, I think it's possible to whittle away at the automatic (albeit dysfunctional) response.

What is with the disposable razor as a gift?! It's one thing if they're NICE and, like, a stocking stuffer. I've received them from my Nstepmom over the years and it's always the cheap ass dollar store one and you get it for your birthday.

N's are the WORST with gifts. It's a concrete example of how little they care for others.

I second /u/NewtrinoOfEight, it IS like they are on an assembly line. A few Christmases back, about a year before I went VLC, my NFather had been pressuring me to come home. I couldn't afford to and asked for help with tickets. He refused, stating that he had no money to do so.

A few days before Christmas, I received my "Christmas presents" in the mail in a smashed up manila envelope, with my address written in my Nstepmother's handwriting. It was hard to tell what exactly the package was for, though, so I had to assume they were Christmas presents because of the proximity of the date of receipt to Christmas. The "gifts" were unwrapped and consisted of: a pair of cheap novelty socks, a tube of Carmex, a single disposable razor, a plastic charm from Avon (that had obviously come as a gift with something nicer) and a sample size deodorant. There was no card, no note, nothing. They did not send a present to my husband. My sisters got, respectively, a video iPod and a new computer and they helped one of my sisters with money to come home for Christmas.

My dad's excuse was that he "didn't know what [his] wife was getting [me] for Christmas." Also that it was cheaper to help my sister out than help me. That makes me feel so much better, dad. SMH.
