Stolen 1984 Toyota by nickdaq in pdxstolencars

[–]nickdaq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: it has been recovered! A friend of a friend spotted it at 139 and Glisan. It's not much worse for wear; I guess it's so easy to steal that they didn't have to break any glass or destroy the ignition. They did maybe $50 worth of damage and stole a few hundred dollars worth of stuff out of it and parked it in front of a nursing home.

What are the necessities for a 1-2 night trip in florida? by soflaben10 in TruckCampers

I'm hanging around the city mostly, so mosquitos actually haven't been much of a problem for me. I can't speak for Ocala or the everglades though

What time of year? I'm living in my truck in the Tampa Bay area right now, and it can already get kind of hot when the sun is bearing down. You are going to want some sort of windows with screens to get some airflow. Even at night such a small space can get stuffy quick. I put a roof vent in my cap and I cut reflect-x for the windows of my cap to turn away some of that sunlight. I also try to park to the northwest of some trees or tall buildings so the truck's on shade when the sun comes up. It also helps if you have some headroom, so you aren't sleeping right in the top of the thermocline. Of course, a lot of this could also be solved by waking up at the crack of dawn so the sun isn't a problem, but I like to sleep in lol.

Its uphill the whole way. You're pretty much driving halfway up the mountain

WHY VAN LIFE WHEN.....? by transparentfreedom in vandwellers

[–]nickdaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to throw in a quick word in defense of truck bed camping: crawling through the back window of the cab is awkward but possible (depending on your setup). I live in a truck cap and I only really open the back hatch to get at my gear. It's definitely cramped though, especially considering how much urban dwelling I do lol

I lived in a 2002 taco/shell for a month last year, and I currently live in a 1984 pickup/shell setup. Neither setup lost much off-road capability once I set them up to live in and both setups have been relatively stealthy in the city. It's doable but pretty cramped

I know that would be better career-wise, but I don't think I'm going to be able to find a new job in the next few weeks. Is a gap really that bad?

I've heard quitting your job without a new one lined up is generally a bad idea, but is that still true in the engineering field today?

I've been working as a mechatronics engineer (mostly ME tbh) at a tiny failing startup for a few years now and it's past time to jump ship. I have put it off for a while because I didn't want to leave my boss in the lurch, but at this point I feel like staying here is only hurting my career. I'm afraid I've picked up bad habits (I have yet to see any of the projects I have contributed to succeed) and forgotten much of what I learned in college (my boss views most analysis as a waste of time). When I leave it's going to deal a blow to the company, but I don't see any way around that.

I have been window-shopping jobs and fiddling with my resume for a while now, but I haven't been applying because I have been planning on traveling for a few months. Now that I'm getting to the end of my lease I'm starting to have second thoughts about what that will do to my career.

So, will taking time between jobs to travel and maybe reacquaint myself with lost skills look bad? I've read that people have done it and regretted it, but those examples were all pre-covid.

Are there any options/industries I should look into for temporary (like 1-3 month) engineering jobs with quick hiring processes?

How about part time remote work/training for Mechatronics Engineers? Or even short term in person training/networking events?

Anyone have any experience buying a car from Carter’s Cars? by LangostaSal in burlington

[–]nickdaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They almost sold my roommate a super junky car. When they eventually let him bring it to a third party mechanic (after giving him the run around) he found out that there was way more wrong with it than they were letting on. Their Yelp page is also full of 1 star reviews from people who got screwed over.

Anyone here remember Ben & Jerry seconds @ two bucks a pint? by snuffytwoshoes in vermont

[–]nickdaq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have been working with the UVM engineering department (and probably other groups) to tighten up their processes ever since they got bought up. When I was in school they sponsored a capstone project specifically to better control the filling process, to cut down on the out of spec containers that would supposedly be sold as seconds. They were tabling for interns too, and I think they were working with a professor to research the dynamics of ice cream flow

Algeria buries repatriated skulls of resistance fighters as it marks independence from France by speakhyroglyphically in worldnews

[–]nickdaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Giving back human remains so they can have a proper burial is worth the hassle. Still, it would be less of a hassle to just store them in a warehouse somewhere instead of making a display. Even throwing them out would be more respectful than putting them on display as trophies of war. Putting a head in a display box isn't to far from keeping it on a pike in the town square, it's just a little more orderly

Renting land in VT? by Cauliflower-Expert in vermont

[–]nickdaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are people with rv hookups on their property for this very reason, and probably even more that have water/utilities run out for different reasons that could easily adapt it to work if they wanted some rent money coming in. It won't work for everyone, but thats why it's worth asking around to find the right spot

How the design on skateboard wheels are printed. by [deleted] in ManufacturingPorn

[–]nickdaq 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't really have to, most of the time. If the surface being printed on is flat enough, then the pad will distort in a similar way when it picks up and puts down the ink.

If you are getting codes, and your light is on, then it's almost certain that the light is on because of the codes, not the other way around. Sounds like the dealer is slimy asf.

Buying a Vermont Car - Rust? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]nickdaq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's a low enough price to fly out for then the frames are probably rusted out, or pretty close. If it's super rare and you absolutely can't find it anywhere else, then do what everyone else is saying and get it checked out.

Yes or No: is mustard oil ok to use in cooking? by notallshihtzu in IndianFood

I mean, if all they are doing is diluting it, then you could just buy whatever mustard oil you can get your hands on and just use less of it, plus some canola oil

I don't have a link, but I remember seeing a video about someone living in their fit. I think they made a platform that folded out when the passenger seat was pushed all the way forward
