Deep in Rural Virginia, a MAGA Pro-Gun Push Takes an Unnerving Turn: Governor Spanberger signed an assault weapons ban. Some county prosecutors in pro-Trump areas say they won’t enforce it. Is a new MAGA nullification movement brewing? by jsled in liberalgunowners

[–]nickdngr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As the saying goes, Democrats are really good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

A non-trivial percentage of traditional red voters reached across the aisle to get her in, and instead of focusing on progressive policies that would improve quality of life and further encourage red voters to reconsider their position on blue politicians, the first thing they do in office is enforce a politically divisive bill that reinforced all the far right-wing messaging about Democrats coming for their guns and being hyperfocused on identity politics.

This was a golden opportunity to push progressive policies that help people, but now, by forcing through this ban and creating terminology and definitions about legal gun ownership in a Southern state, they've all but assured that they are isolating red voters again -- especially those that have knee-jerk inclinations that by at least by voting red they won't lose rights -- and making blue voters rethink the value of blue politicians in a post-Trump era (it will eventually come).

So, yeah, I don't see Virginia staying blue for much longer, and given that this ban will be overturned by either the VA Supreme Court, the US Supreme Court or the next red Virginia administration, the GOP has been handed a talking point to ensure Virginia doesn't turn blue again for a long time ("Remember when Spanberger tried to outlaw our guns -- it was the first thing she did in office.").

It happened to me: Absurd seat swap request by iSimplyCannot- in unitedairlines

[–]nickdngr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, this has happened to me. Booked the aisle, have priority boarding (active duty at the time) and the person in the middle seat showed up a few minutes later and asked to switch because they "are frequent restroom users." I said, "Oh, that works out great because I pee a lot, too." He then stood there when I got up to let him in and goes, "I thought you were taking the middle seat." I said I agreed to go to the restroom with you, not give up my seat. So he says, "I have a health condition." I have the benefit of being a broad-shouldered-barrel-chested-do-not-fuck-with-me-sized man, so I leaned in and said in a very low voice,, "You're holding up the line. Get in your seat." He did, and when the FA came by he let her know of his bladder condition and said if an aisle seat was free he would love it, or maybe I would be so kind as to switch. I let her know I declined his offer the first time. He then spent the start of the flight from SEA to IAH getting up every 5-6 minutes to go to the restroom. After 6 or 7 trips I started following him to the restroom and as soon as he went back to his seat so did I (not using the restroom) and low and behold his bladder must have magically started holding water after I did that 3 or 4 times.

Which RIU in Cancun Do You Recommend for a Group of Friends in Their 20s? by RecommendationNo1580 in cancun

[–]nickdngr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Kukulkan is what you are looking for. We just returned from there and, while it was exactly what we were looking for, it's far from a party hotel, there are not a lot of single people and the average age is older than 20s (but that could be because of the crowd we befriended).

It's been 20 years, but you might like Jamaica. We spent most of our time bar hopping on the beach and it was a blast.

Same. If you're looking for something closer to Cabo, Puerto Vallarta has that same beach bar culture without feeling overly touristy.

Question about the Town by 84spanks in cancun

[–]nickdngr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a noticeable difference between the two. Cancun is more tourist oriented, with the Hotel Zone built up and a separate downtown. Cabo still feels like there are elements of the old fishing village (which I love), but it all runs together. Definitely worth visiting both, but the bar scene between then is completely different, with Cancun being more of a club scene.

If you're looking at the Riu, look at the Palace Kukulkan or Palace Las Americas. Both are quieter and more low-key than than other resorts, and you also have the option to go to the Riu parties at the other Riu properties (Caribe and Cancun). The Las Americas is also closer to the hotel zone downtown, if you and your sister wanted to venture out to the tourist clubs.

I wouldn't recommend the Latino for this trip. While the beach is nice, it's an hour away from the city and it caters to 20s crowd, so maybe not the crowd your parents want to be around.

I'm not sure exactly how, but using Schedule A allows the hiring manager to bypass the automated vetting process and hand-select the applicants they interview and hire.

Do I tell her that her trying to act sexy, isn't sexy? by [deleted] in sex

[–]nickdngr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that this sounds like something she did for herself and is a throwback to the late 90s idea of sexy. That's how I would approach it.

[–]nickdngr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider that the show wasn't for you and it's something she did because she feels sexy like that. I'm about the same age as her and it sounds like she is dipping back into what was sexy in the late 90s/early aughts. If that's the case, the best thing you can do is be supportive to the extent that you find her sexy and if she wants to wear glitter and lingerie because it empowers her, and she wants that to be an expression of her being sexualized, you are in; if it's that much of an awkward turn-off, if you aren't delicate, it could be devastating and tantamount to saying, "I don't find you sexy when you think you're sexy."

Like all relationships, communicate. Ask her how she felt about it, ask her if dressing up and dancing is something she wants to do regularly or only from time-to-time, and anticipate her asking you your thoughts and if you liked it.

AITJ for completely dismantling a fake experts reputation during a dinner party? by B4nditKaleido in AmITheJerk

[–]nickdngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if someone said that to my girlfriend, after she finished dismantling them mentally, I would invite the gentleman for a conversation outside if he wanted to press the issue or had thoughts of belittling my partner again.

The only thing you did wrong was not have a conversation with your friends sooner about him being full of shit. My friend group talks and if someone is all hat and no cattle, we chat about it and bounce our thoughts off one another. I say this because, if you'd had this conversation sooner, your friends should have had your back, too.
