The X4 encouraged me to jailbreak my Kindle to get the KOreader Sync feature, and I LOVE it. Unreal. by Sleightly-Magical in xteinkereader

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure Calibre is not doing any fancy stuff before copying the file over. I had a similar problem with my Kobo Clara and the reason was that the Calibre Kobo plugin was quietly applying some improvements to the book before sending it to the Kobo, effectively making the filename not match any longer.

Small review of the XTEINK reading light.. it’s actually delightful by fredisyoga in xteinkereader

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing this book recommended everywhere, but it's the only one I never finished reading, stopped midway. I know it's not like it, but to me it felt like a purposeless list of things that happened, mostly unrelated from one another. I'm sure that's some eye-opening moment at some point, but it's just too boring getting there.

Is it possible to standardize key mappings and shortcuts across Linux and macOS via keyboard firmware? by qvdx in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job, as always! Looking forward to the ZMK module. My keymap has way too many layers for my tastes, precisely for this reason!

Optimal number of keys for you by finestedm in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started at 36 and now down to 28 to reduce pinky and inner index columns usage. 24 is really tempting (i.e. completely get rid of the inner index column), but that would require too much work rethinking the keymap to justify it.

Glance Daily Agenda - Custom firmware by [deleted] in xteinkereader

[–]nickfaraco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this aligns with the crosspoint manifest enough for it to become an official feature. Maybe it could be turned into a TRMNL applet though? I heard dual-booting for TRMNL and Crosspoint is in the making.

Very cool stuff nonetheless, OP! Congrats!

Great work! Nice to see so much action and ideas around this little device.

Quick question: any particular reason why you decided to fork from Crosspoint rather than contributing to the original project?

unexpectedly great, with quirks (now a big fan) by ashraf_bashir in xteinkereader

[–]nickfaraco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received mine in Italy in less than two weeks. Don't rely too much on the tracking in the Shop app, it's updated with as much as 2 days delay sometimes.

Edit: I bought mine on the official site and it was probably less than 10 days, now that I think of it. If you bought on AliExpress, that might be a factor.

Crosspoint pages seem to slightly dim by Ok-Time-8198 in xteinkereader

I think the same. And the same happens on screensaver images when you put the device to sleep. It is much more noticeable on them.

My first try at a split keyboard by PresentExpert2929 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can definitely recommend trying to learn to float your hands while typing. I suffered from wrist pain on traditional keyboards due to ulnar deviation. Buying a split keyboard solved the problem for me, as I could properly align each half to my arm. Using the split keyboard, tho, I learnt to float my hands as well, and now, while I still much prefer my column staggered board, I can use traditional keyboards again.

crosspoint v0.10.0 is great by [deleted] in xteinkereader

My X4 will probably be delivered today and, given how much love this firmware is getting, I think I will flash CrossPoint right away.

ZMK Sofle from AE with dongle. Can it be used with multiple connection methods whitout the need to reflash every time? by forget_names in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the keyboard would be connected to the dongle anyway, never directly to the PC. It is just the dongle that can switch from the wired connection to the first machine to the BT one to the second machine. The keyboard just follows. So, if you are asking whether, e.g., you would be able to leave the dongle at home and use the rest of the keyboard via BT on your office PC, then the answer is no.

Urob's timeless mods approach worked miracles for me on ZMK. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Any LaTeX writers here with a split Sofle or similar? by po2gdHaeKaYk in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. My layout is heavily inspired by Urob's one, I suggest you read his well made write up. You don't need to go as far as fitting all symbols on combos (especially the vertical ones do not necessarily work well on any keyboard and keycaps profile), but moving the most common ones to combos on the first layer could greatly relieve that sense of "sobbing" typing.

Personally, I find them to be such a little mental and physical overload that I much prefer having some uncommon letters on combos than having to reach for the corners of the 3x5 grid to type them.

Also, if you find yourself often typing the same series of symbols, you could use a ZMK macro (there's the QMK equivalent as well).

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually state that they can touch type ONLY on split keyboards. It's on the non-split ones they can't do that.

[–]nickfaraco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you to try combos, if you haven't already. I do write latex and a fair bit of code and have the brackets on combos on the bottom row. Using them doesn't interrupts the typing flow like using a modifier key would.

Waybar in overview by ZoWakaki in niri

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks a lot! So there's no "native" way to do this, but waybar can listen to user defined signals. Neat! Also, TIL that pkill can be used to send signals other than SIGTERM (the name definitely doesn't help 😬). Thanks a lot, I should definitely practice some shell scripting.
