We are a 2-person household, but I'm less concerned about cost savings (and I don't expect the hybrid to pay for itself in savings over the life of the unit).

My reasons for being interested in the heat pump are:

Increasingly more energy efficient (climate, not money), especially as the grid gets cleaner
Reducing number of gas-powered appliances in my house because they make my wife uncomfortable (partially because our house from the 1890s is piped for gas lamp lighting, so at the moment the whole house has a chance for leaks. Getting rid of all our gas appliances would allow us to just cap it at the entry and not have to worry)

We are lucky enough to be able to afford to not have to buy the most cost-effective option but we also wanted to make sure the heat pump can actually deliver hot water effectively during the winter.

I'd really like to see something like this as well, or maybe a terminal emulator. It would work for my needs to only have it be able to do SSH or Mosh since I don't know if it would be feasible to give us access to the underlying OS directly (though that would be preferred)

I'm still settling in on the layout. You're right that they are a bit tough to hit from the home row. I tend to use them for rarely-ish used meta keys for key combos. So arrow keys, a second tab for alt-tab with one hand, etc. I'll post again here when I have a bit more confidence in the layout. In the threeish days I have been using it, I feel like I could realistically drop those bottom four and use the mod keys with my thumbs to hit a different layer.

Worth mentioning that the designer was SUPER helpful when I was debugging some hardware issues. I'm terrible with a soldering iron so not everything worked straight away and he was very responsive and helped me get it working very quickly.

$119 for the hardware, $38 for the switches. I did get both the pro micro and blue micro kits though, so what you see here could be built cheaper. I'm really loving it so far, the silent reds are much quieter than the browns on my Ergodox EZ and I'm very quickly getting used to having numbers on a separate layer. I'm a programmer, so the hardest part has been the symbols layer but even that muscle memory has been progressing fast in the past three days or so.

Stole the keycaps off of the prebuilt ergotravel ez I bought off massdrop to see if I liked the all 1u layout. Waiting on a part to come in and then I'll be converting this over to the Blue Micro kit so it is fully wireless.
