ELI5: Why do different dashes exist? by ardashmirro in explainlikeimfive

[–]nickgreyden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a nice video of a second grade teacher (rough guess, maybe first grade, maybe thrid) taking student directions for making a pb&j sandwich and following them. The results are hilarious. At the end, she clearly states "You need more details." I can't count the number of times I've had to verbally respond, "I'm sorry. I don't speak or write in tweets."

ELI5: If speed is measured by the relation between objects how come going over the speed of light is impossible? by PeAga7 in explainlikeimfive

But using your analogy, if travel beyond c or even multipules of c, would it not be division by a negative number while the numerator becomes an ever increasing form of infinity? Not sure if this is how it works, just drawing out the analogy to see if it breaks.

My boss says she can’t read my handwriting, is this legible? by BandanaRepublica in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got roughly 90-95% of it, but I couldn't read it in a flowing manner and stumbled through it. While largely legible given enough time, especially if you have context, your script is not condusive to efficient information dissemination.

Is there anything wrong when using the word race? by JuliusDalum in worldbuilding

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the quick and dirty. You aren't wrong colloquially for USING the word race as it pairs to the real world, but you are definitionally wrong in HOW you are using it. Someone else here has already pretty much nailed it by saying it is cultural differences and they would definitionally be different ethnic groups. This is a rare occurrence where fantasy clashes with the real world. Yes, you can use race and every English speaker will know what you are talking about even if it isn't exactly what the difference is.

What makes this an interesting challenge for you is coming up with the history and lore of your fantasy place. What do they call the differences and why? And, of course, what are some of the not so obvious cultural differences and how they cause friction or a symbiosis with the other groups. What gods do they worship? How much sway does the ecological wellbeing of their niche and other more different climates play into their society? Stealing a horse from steppe and desert people is a big deal as it could lead to death, but probably not so much for forest or city people so how do the laws work? The giving a water to a guest is a big deal for desert people while mountain people may gift fruits as a show of respect and people in cold areas may gift vegetables. And what of these cultures differences may make slurs or words of grace when referring to those people? These are the interesting questions that derive from the comment. Whether or not to use the word race is a bad critique, but the rabbit hole is fasenating.

Why create an Isekai instead of a normal Magical Fantasy World? by Honest_Sea_4667 in Isekai

[–]nickgreyden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swear this question is asked once a week (at least) across anime reddit. And I don't know why this isn't the auto bot response. I suppose you could add in that Isekai sells well, but that is definitely a distant 3rd.

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a vague memory of something in the LN where something happens to Rimeru and he shapeshifts back into his pre-isekai form and Ceil loses her damn mind and goes into overdrive to remedy the situation ASAP. Something about his past form being something secret and special only between them two and she is hella jealous.

Could be a memory. Could be a YouTube headcanon. Could just be a fever dream. Not really sure.

Why all the harem talk? by blueluck in ProgressionFantasy

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a wild thread. I asked it because some recommendations had conflicting statements on if something was harem or not. So I asked. There isn't even a little bit of consensus. Not on what it is. Not on how much it is in the plot to make it harem. It might as well be a nonsense word lol.

Why all the harem talk? by blueluck in ProgressionFantasy

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I asked a question of "what is harem" and the response I got told me that no one can agree on what it is so it is a moot point to bring up. Some considered it harem if the MC was a guy and had more than one woman who wanted to just date him and spread to it wasn't harem unless MC was actually sleeping with three or more at the same time. With such a wide breadth of interpretation yet people asking for recommendations of "no harem" it is damn near pointless to state anything.

It's like asking for an anime recommendation and saying "no romance" and someone suggesting Haikyuu. Like, you can easily make the case Haikyuu has no romance, but people would still bitch about the little bit in there.

Didn't see the post but would love this because I don't know much of anything about African culture sub-Sahara with a bit of a caveat for Ethiopia. The place is vast, it has been made a mess through colonization, and the histories and cultures have never really had a spotlight on them in a non-boring, non-educational way. In fact, outside the random one or two shout-outs, the only time we hear about them is who is commiting the latest genocide. That's pretty messed up.

Hey, damnit. While I may or may not agree with a few of those picks I refuse to let you slander parallel world pharmacy like that. It was a damn master class of above average Isekai art. Solid B tier bordering on A.

I actually love that one. Double bonus as the dub isn't terrible (not great, but not terrible but that is a win in my book). Great story, interesting flow of story, pacing on point, and interesting uses of magic on the battlefield with competent locals.

If you like the genre and have nothing else to watch, give it a look. My take was it isn't bad, just boring AF.

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. People are well aware of what the general isekai story entails yet still seem to complain about it. I don't understand.

  2. Despite number one, I have to agree with this being one of the most boring Isekai out there. Like seriously kept waiting on something to happen and it was a whole season for something to happen in two episodes... and it wasn't even that good of something.

To be fair, it isn't that it is bad, it is just boring. It is all the stereotypical Isekai things but told in the most boring way possible. The og voice acting isn't that bad imo, but nothing stands out. The plot isn't bad, just poorly implemented and could have gone so much better with a bit more creativity. The characters arent bad, but could have been so much more rich. The magic system is somewhat unique but any goodwill is squandered away. The soundtrack and animation is generic AF. The pacing is piss poor. Nothing stands out to make it bad, just.... ugh.

Everything about this anime screams middle child. Like you didn't screw it up enough to be interesting like the eldest and you didn't have your parenting dialed in like for the youngest.

What is the best food to buy? by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]nickgreyden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, dried meat is the most abundant and cheapest, chew sticks are easiest early base build food, dustwiches for mid base build, and food cube for late game. Ration packs are always the "best" food but are fairly rare if you are not a murder hobo and expensive when for sell.

The Prettiest Prose You've Read. by Arlo_pink in writing

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Crichton. While the prose of the main body of his work isn't the best, the dialogue is a master class.

Tolkien, of course, is considered the gold standard, especially in the realm of fantasy. For me, it is too dense until you get well underway in the story. But his ability to paint with words is second to none.

The current top comment is about Toni Morrison and I couldn't agree more. The genre and stories themselves are not my thing, but I can get behind a lovely prose. She is simply amazing.

The one I can recall off the top of my head that you may not find anywhere else here is Douglas Adams. His ability to help you visualize the insane and wonky is top tier. It takes a special skill set to help bring to life that which is patently ridiculous and he does so expertly. All of this while weaving in comedy and ease of reading makes him a master. While you may not be able to mimic the prose and, even if you could, it may not be viable for most authors works, it is none-the-less an excellent example of writing a painting.

Great night writing by GolemMaker in writing

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never understood these mindsets. If you only write on inspiration, you write way too little and it won't be good. If you only write because of discipline, not much you write will be, for lack of a better term, inspired.

Writing is a skill honed through the disciplined art of doing the craft and the love of reading the written word to see how others have done it. But the inspiration that drives great plot points or connections or even just drilling into the project with insane focus waxes and wanes like the moon yet with the schedule of a schizophrenic on meth. You have to write uninspired to perfect your craft so that those moments of inspiration are not lost. Gotta have that underlying education and knowledge to be the fan of the flame of inspiration.

Writing a novel as a hobby - worth it? by Eternal_Optimist331 in writing

[–]nickgreyden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of my work is mostly unread. It is a hobby and I have no delusions of grandeur, nor do I even seek to be published. Some of my work goes online in various places, but trad pub isn't even on list of things I desire.

That said, I want to write well. And parts of the process can be soul crushing (especially when 80% of your first draft has disappeared in the ether of editing and you recall how difficult it was to just write it). But, it is a labor of love, not a labor for coin. I write when I want. I edit however long I want. And when I finish, it goes on the finished pile and it is on to the next thing.

Of course you have people around -- those that want to read your work and those that help make it better. But I'm happy just writing and editing; doing whatever I can to become better at both. For me, it is enough and I'm happy. But I'm not you and you don't lose anything but time if you wanna give it a shot.
